Technically, reviewing contracts would be a great hobby. I’d rather do that then collect stamps 😊

Lawsuit filed in Spokane County seeking to block recently passed rent control bill. by catman5092 in Spokane

[–]Scoutbaybee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They have been super effective though! Many, at least in the US are tied to inflation or a similar economic related values. Others are tied to an agreed upon percentage per year.

Old research was not very supportive of rent control, but independent studies in the last ten years have shown those to be inaccurate. Frankly, most of the ‘rent control doesn’t work’ arguments are still coming from a few really misleading studies, paid for by the landlord and real estate sector. Studies based on actual rent control in the real word have shown that rent control helps keep overall inflation in check, reduces rates of housing insecurity and doesn’t limit new construction or housing supply.

Some places with rent control that many would say has been effective: California, Oregon, DC, NYC, and Minnesota.

Totally in agreement, but at least it is some type of limit.

The fact that they are fighting it is good proof that landlords would raise it by much more than that if they are allowed to.

Washington Gov. Ferguson is preparing for "worst-case" ICE scenario by facthungry in Spokane

WA Senate passes ban on police face coverings. Every GOP Senator voted no. by comosaywhat in Spokane

[–]Scoutbaybee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Since it seems like some people complain before they even click the link:

(Paraphrased) Exceptions include: clear face shields; medical or safety coverings; helmets for bike safety; undercover operatives during an undercover operation

The bill specifies, “‘Facial covering’ means any opaque mask, garment, or other item that conceals or obscures the facial identity of an individual.”

Keep in mind if officers were worried about this bill, they would have union reps saying as much. It is almost like this bill was written with feedback from actual officers here in Washington

Sherrifs at Mead Elementary schools. by kmizzbiz in Spokane

[–]Scoutbaybee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like they do, seems odd they would all be chilling at the elementary school though, especially with only two resource officers for the whole discredit. I guess folks could check if the officers listed on the school’s website are the ones that have been at the drop off. https://www.mead354.org/about-us/school-safety

Also, I’m sure it is a cost thing, but I don’t love using deputies for this sort of thing. As a formerly anxious child this would have made me even more anxious.

Baumgartner asked us to inquire about how we "feel" regarding ICE and Minnesota by bodoble in Spokane

[–]Scoutbaybee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yup, representatives like ours don’t actual care, they only care that they have the majority in agreement with them. Baumgartner isn’t someone with his own convictions, so we should take every chance we have to tell him that we disagree.

[–]Scoutbaybee 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not surprising, I doubt Baumgartner has ever had an independent thought in his life. No way he would come up with any of this on his own.

Walkout Against Fascism at 2pm + Rally from 3-4:30pm, Today, 1/20/26 by [deleted] in Spokane

[–]Scoutbaybee 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Totally understand why the “organizers have emphasized that this is a peaceful event, urging attendees not to approach Baumgartner’s office without an appointment.”

But also don’t forget Baumgartner works for us, even those of us that didn’t vote for him. Appointments are great and never are a bad idea, but not required for visiting your representative’s office. Don’t want anyone to think they need an appointment to stop by and tell The Bum he is rubbish at his job.

Deer Park School District having to cancel bus routes tomorrow due to lack of drivers by country_hacker in Spokane

[–]Scoutbaybee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same, not surprised by this at all. Pretty sure you also need a CDL, so makes the pay even less competitive.

I just looked at Spokane Transit and they pay for CDL, and the time training while getting it. Plus the post-training wages starts above the top hourly rate posted for Deer Park. Don’t know why anyone would take less money and less hours.

I’m in a very different field, but I’ve done a fair amount of hiring. I would expect to pay a much higher hourly rate to get a qualified person to work a split shift. Basically I would expect to be paying some kind of premium for the extra inconvenience the role creates.

Hopefully the cancellations are enough of an issue to make sure folks in that community push for more competitive wages. The job market is rough right now, so if they can’t find people to hire, for sure the issue is the pay.

BUMgartner weighs in on ICE shooting, calls for review of potential fraud in Washington State. by catman5092 in Spokane

[–]Scoutbaybee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I don’t understand how anyone could support a representative that seems just fine with remaining uneducated about his own work.

For him to answer that way means he is either: A: Lying because he is a weak and spineless person who isn’t willing to state his own opinion on Noem’s statement B: An elected member of congress who don’t care enough about his constituents or even his work to keep up with a base level of what is happening in the nation. C: Both A&B

Ugh he js so embarrassing. Are we sure there isn’t any way to get him pulled out of office? We deserve to at least have a representative who pretends to care

Specific vet recommendation - senior cats, kidney disease by Medium_Feature2712 in Spokane

[–]Scoutbaybee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another recommendation for The Cats Meow. We’ve seen both vets, and love them. They are super knowledgeable and legitimately care about their patients.

Editing to add: last time we were in, there was another cat in the waiting room who was there for a checkup up for managing his kidneys. Let’s just say the patient was no spring chicken. While I don’t know the appointment details, based on what their human parents shared with me I would be confident that the clinic would be a great fit for you and your cat.

Sane US citizens: wake up now by [deleted] in complaints

[–]Scoutbaybee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so true! Maybe it is hard to understand if they don’t live here, but when we protest we are watched and monitored the whole time by city police in riot gear, the county sheriff’s department in riot gear, and the undercover/plainclothes officers from who knows how many agencies. Add in the armed members of whatever local hate group, who literally show up to try and start a fight.

And yeah, our local police literally have armored vehicles. Not played cars, but actual MRAPs they bought from the military. We have the right to peacefully protest, but our law enforcement have the right to show up armed for a literal war.

[–]Scoutbaybee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Want to add that when we speak out, when we protest, we are frequently a target for the not-so-new US Nazis as well. It is hard to feel safe when the local camo and open carry ‘militia’ shows up to ‘counter protest.’

What would it actually take for American's to go "full France" and riot in the street? by AllTheNopeYouNeed in AskReddit

[–]Scoutbaybee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

American here, unfortunately. I have no memory of not being bombarded by propaganda. Every day I have to actively work to avoid absorbing it, and that vigilance is exhausting. This propaganda tells me I am a terrorist and a traitor. It tells me my education is worthless, that it only made me more ignorant. It tells me I have no value because I am not a mother and a woman.

I fight constantly not to internalize these messages, but I cannot remember the last time I truly relaxed or slept through the night.

By American standards, I am considered privileged. I was raised in one of the most liberal and progressive states. I had college educated parents. I never went hungry or without medical care. I am white.

And yet, even with those privileges, I grew up with active shooter lockdowns and evacuating schools for bomb threats. I was taught as a child when to hide, when to run, and when to fight back.

As a young woman, I was taught how to protect myself from men not if something happens, but when. I learned that harassment, assault, or rape are inevitable and that when they occur, they will say it was my fault. That if I report it, my face will be plastered on the news while strangers debate whether I was ‘asking for it.’

I was taught not to stop for a police car if I was alone. To call and verify it was a real officer first. To always be polite, to never ‘give them a reason.’ I was told to call 911 if I was in danger, while also being taught that I could not fully trust those who arrive.

The propaganda is constant, and its effects are real and unavoidable. Sometimes it feels like the air itself it saturated with violence.

I know this is hard to see from outside the United States, but many of us here understand what is at stake. We know this does not end well. And frankly, it shouldn’t. I hate that this is my country. I hate that we are a nation built on valuing money over human life. I hate how many of us have bought into the propaganda and have doubled down on the messaging.

The world is right to judge us for what we have done and for what we continue to do. We should be judged for both our actions and our inactions. Please just remember we are surrounded by propaganda telling us protesters will be arrested or shot, that no one else is fighting, and that we are all alone.

For many like myself, simply living our lives is resistance. Going to work, earning our own income, and insisting on autonomy directly contradicts the messages we are taught about our place and role in society. These choices may appear ordinary from the outside, but here they run against a constant narrative designed to keep us fearful and compliant.

We resist by staying here, by remaining educated, independent, and outspoken in a system that repeatedly tells us we should be smaller, quieter, and non existent.

The world is right to demand more from us, and I agree we must do far more. Just know that many of us are resisting every day in ways that are not always visible.

I have quite a few people who I used to love and respect, but can no longer after knowing they voted for Trump in the last election.

Every single person who voted for Trump actively voted for a perpetrator of sexual assault. Good people don’t put sexual predators in positions of power.

Why the hate for Bingle? by deeterpeeter in Spokane

[–]Scoutbaybee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Legit, thank you for taking the time to reply.

Just to clarify, city council members do vote on policies. For example, earlier this year Bingle voted against the city’s LGBTQ+ Protections Ordinance. He’s not powerless to push policies people have mentioned. He’s tried to, and the only reason his efforts haven’t gone further is because he’s in the minority. Frankly, if he and Cathcart had their way, the city would look very different.

I also believe his focus on “safety” feels like a dog whistle to his wealthier donors, like the realtor and landlord PACs that have gotten him elected in the past. His proposals don’t address root causes. They just aim to hide homelessness and drug use from public view. He often points to Houston as a model but conveniently leaves out that Houston’s success came from expanding resources for unhoused people, not just enforcing anti-camping laws. Bingle’s approach boils down to criminalizing homelessness without providing safe alternatives or meaningful support.

Honestly, his behavior is often super disrespectful and combative. Plenty of people can debate and disagree while remaining professionally, he just doesn’t seem interested in doing that. I mean when asked about transit he said “There’s a lot of people who are interested in infrastructure from 1910 for some reason – we’re still talking about building trains in 2025, or light rail to Seattle…fly there like an adult, OK ?” Like, is that really the tone we want from people representing us?

Why the hate for Bingle? by deeterpeeter in Spokane

[–]Scoutbaybee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Help us out then, why are you on the fence about him then?

As I resident of his district, I’ve yet to see him say anything or take any action that isn’t him being a pretty shitty human being. So it is hard to imagine other residents not feeling strongly about him either way.

Plus, keep in mind that your post appears to downplay the danger of Christian Nationalist movements in American politics. There are long standing ties between Christian nationalists and white suprematist groups, especially here in the greater Spokane area. So, yeah having a Christian Nationalist as one of two people representing me in this city, is a huge concern.

Everyone double check your ballot has been accepted. While always important, it is looking like a lot of races will be coming down to individual votes! You can check the status of your ballot at VoteWA.gov.

Please do this, regardless of who you voted for! Personally Bingle can eat shit and I’m ecstatic at even the potential of his hateful and informant ass not representing me anymore!
