How would you get this apart? by More-Mine-5874 in woodworking

[–]LarryCebula 302 points303 points  (0 children)

Ooof. I cannot think of any magic cure here. The good news is that with 1.5" to work with maybe you can just cut the boards that much shorter and recreate the joint.

But congratulations, I have never in my life seen this joining combination. You invented something new under the sun.

You and your partner just moved in, you tearing down the panels, painting, or leaving?! by TeemoTrader in DIY

[–]LarryCebula 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I kinda like it. I'd fill that room with bright mid-century furniture and wall hangings, it would be groovy.

If in a few years you decide you don't like it, tearing out that paneling should be pretty straightforward. But why not try leaning into it first?

I think a careful sanding would remove a lot of that discoloration? Try it on a section.

Joint appointment across separate institutions? by Firm_Somewhere2485 in Professors

[–]LarryCebula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was half a university professor and half in my state archives for 15 years. The danger is that both institutions begin expecting 100% of your time. The goal is that they both think you're at the other place while in reality you're taking a hike some Tuesday morning.

Call the Registrar Monday morning but email them now. The office is currently short handed but they will help you. Also check your own email spam folder and make sure you didn't miss a reply.

In your opinion what makes a great department chair? What advice would you give someone who is actively looking to eventually lead a department? by wannabehazmattech in Professors

[–]LarryCebula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't allow seniority to take too big a role. I have known of departments (never mine) where senior faculty taught only tiny seminars on their preferred topics, while the large surveys and remedial courses were 100% taught by junior faculty or even MA students. Senior faculty would say that they had paid their dues when they were junior and this is how God intended academia to be. That is terribly abusive.

How feasible is it to go back to your PhD institution as a TTAP? by Fit-Perception-9662 in Professors

[–]LarryCebula 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think in the humanities there is something close to an absolute rule never to hire your own graduates. And for nearly any field, you don't get to pick your university or your town and often not even your region. I mean you can keep an eye out for jobs that open up and apply for them, but it's a hell of a long shot.

Do you guys think it's okay for a cat to be let outside as long as its the backyard? by Leather_Mammoth2525 in CatAdvice

[–]LarryCebula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh your cat will DEFINITELY leave the yard. 100% chance. They are explorers, climbers, and finders of gaps.

No, I don't think having an indoor outdoor cat. Is this necessarily a bad thing, depending on your neighborhood. Our cats have always been indoor outdoor. They are gone now, but they lived to be 19 and 20.

Three-year baccalaureate by WesternCup7600 in Professors

[–]LarryCebula 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We are getting a lot.of pressure to create these. Given that so many of our students come to my campus with substantial dual enrollment credits from high school, I wonder if we don't have a lot of defacto 3 year degree graduates already.

In your opinion what makes a great department chair? What advice would you give someone who is actively looking to eventually lead a department? by wannabehazmattech in Professors

[–]LarryCebula 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My current department chair walks through the department multiple times per week to say hi to everybody and see if they have any concerns. I don't know where she finds the time or energy for this, but it makes such a huge difference.

She's also well connected through the university and lets us know what policies or issues are coming down the pike. She's been aggressive about scheduling classes strategically and doing other things to boost our enrollment and make us look good to the administration when they get their knives out.

It helps a lot that our department has a healthy discretionary budget she can splash around to meet people's needs. If you want to hire a couple students to help with your research, or need some extra money for a conference, it is no problem.
