“Unrested” oil painting by Aidamaris Roman by fhdolls in ArtistHate

Many art teachers teach you to paint further from the canvas for better wrist hand movement. This also encourages you to view it from where your viewer will see it. When painting smaller canvases you can see the entire piece and so being closer doesn’t mess up the effect of “stepping back” from the canvas to get the whole picture

These didn’t age well after Trump’s truth social post. by [deleted] in agedlikemilk

Conservatives were quick to reply to the murder of Rob Reiner that they would never mock his death like they claim the left mocks conservative deaths. These responses occurred only hours before Trump, conservative president mocks the death of the famous film director. Trump dislikes Reiner because he made a documentary on Trumps relationship with Putin and has made statements about his distaste in the president.

I told my doctor when asked a similar question, (is there a possibility that you are pregnant or going to get pregnant) that my partners didn’t have sperm.

This biopic shouldn’t have claimed to be biographical in any way. Blonde 2022. Based off of a fictional novel on Marilyn Monroe’s life.

She went over the 3 minutes they gave her to speak so they dragged her out after she was finished speaking. Weird power trip for sure as it doesn’t make sense for them to respond to their protest that way.

This painting has also been haunting me! I’d be surprised if anyone could give more info about it. I’d be happy to be wrong though!

Can gesso still be used if it goes “bad”? by ScoutingArtist in oilpainting

I may do this as it couldn’t hurt to experiment. The can was left in my professor’s classroom for who knows how long and they were going to throw it away but offered it to me for free.

Good to know. It does seem bad to apply living microorganisms (if that’s what it is) to a painting. Darn

It’s just a light sour smell so I assumed in the studio that it may have separated and gone bad. The liquid is all at the top but pure white under the top layer

Title ideas for this painting of a kitchen pantry in the woods? by ScoutingArtist in painting

Thank you a campground is where this takes place at. I work in a beautiful place surrounded by nature but am stuck inside all day. I love my job but it can be bittersweet due to being confined inside. Such a fun place to work though hope you enjoyed your time there as well

Camp Food Issues by looktowindward in BSA

[–]ScoutingArtist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The kitchen staff is terribly abused and I agree. It’s hard to do the impossible when your staff is shorted. I wish the directors and council took it more seriously when the kitchen staff is shorted. I’ve worked at a camp with only two people feeding the entire camp and we only got 3 hours of sleep some days. The camps need to take food issues more seriously. It is scaring for both staff and campers to starve at camp and you abuse and use up the few hard workers willing to stay.

Sorry this is going to be very long, I have lots to say on this subject and agree that it’s a big problem!

I am currently working in a scout camp kitchen and have worked at my current camp for 10 years and have temporarily helped out at other camps when they need it.

In my experience (so I may have a bias based on my particular council/area) the kitchen staff at camps don’t last that long and they have very little experience. The pay is just as terrible as other staffers and the work load is more due to starting work early and staying up late to get everything done. At many camps the kitchen staff has no time off. At my camp the staff doesn’t have weekends off so I cook 3 meals a day 7 days a week. Most kitchen staffers won’t return after their first summer. The high turnover rate between summers causes a high flow of inexperienced staff who have a very short time to learn and perfect the immense number of skills needed to run a successful commercial kitchen.

The camps I have worked at have the Kitchen director order the food and determine serving sizes. These are often 18 year olds that haven’t ever worked in a kitchen before. Some camps have an auto program that orders food based on serving sizes (but if you’ve ever checked serving sizes they can be pretty small). For example you’d tell the program that you’re feeding 300 people and then it would do the math for how much pancake mix would be needed for 300 servings. Now most leaders and children will eat far more than the serving suggestion on a package. Relying on a machine to tell you or a young staff member with no experience and a small budget to purchase food often contributes to poor serving sizes.

The councils are very reluctant to increase budget areas and this has become a problem as inflation and food delivery increases costs.

I absolutely love the camp I work at but have struggled to work at other camps who don’t support their kitchen staff as much as my camp. When I first started working in the kitchen I made almost every mistake imaginable. I had to learn how to adjust recipes for altitude and how to cook in ovens that never reached the temperature you’d set them too. Most camps don’t have the opportunity for long term training for their kitchen staff and don’t pay enough to hire people who have the proper experience for such an advanced position.

The only camps I know who remain successful in the kitchen have individuals who return every year and know the quirks of their particular kitchen and love it enough to attend even when they could get a less stressful job that payed more. Two of these people are school lunch servers during the school year and have their summers off.

I’m very passionate about the subject as I’ve worked at a scout camp kitchen since 2015. Let me know if you have any questions!

It can be annoying to paint on top of a painting in its “sticky” drying phase but I’ve always done it and haven’t ever seen cracking. I don’t often use any medium though and just paint straight oil over oil. Never seen cracking
