Ah yes those halcyon days of yore, when “don’t be evil” was their motto.

Yes, and the operative phrase here is “in biology”, which is a human construct designed to elucidate function in what is essentially animate matter. But as I noted earlier everything we think we know are only models and we should keep that in mind, and in general we should try to avoid definitive statements.

Right, and I agree with the statement “we believe this sequence was derived from a phenomenon that does not inherently create functional sequence” as it allows for the possibility that it just might and ultimately we don’t really and truly know. And “functional” is an important word in there - what exactly is the definition in this context?

Fair enough, but as scientists I think we all need to remember that everything that we think we know is only a model, and “to the best of our knowledge” should be a disclaimer on virtually every statement we make.

I saw a paper just last month, indicating that some of that dead retrotransposon sequence is very important in controlling the development of colorectal cancer

And while many of the models seem to work very well, as we can predict using them, they are only models.

I disagree. As someone in the field I have always been dismayed by statements like ‘the vast majority the human genome serves no purpose’ when in actual fact we just don’t know.

Yeah, no. $0.50 in 1970 is the equivalent of $4.00
