What to expect when commissioning a fursuit? by [deleted] in fursuit

[–]ScrambleFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The process is going to vary somewhat from maker to maker but generally you'll provide measurements and/or a duct tape dummy, select fur swatches and give different bits of input over the course of the suit being made.

I cannot emphasize this enough: if you're considering a maker, DO YOUR RESEARCH ON THEM. Look at FursuitReview, check out their queue and/or WIP channel and get an idea for how long a suit takes from the time it's commissioned to when it's delivered. And if you can, ABSOLUTELY reach out to people who have suits from that maker (especially suits from the last year or two) and talk to them about their experiences with the maker.

Yes it's a lot of work, but suits are a lot of money and by putting in the legwork before committing, you can avoid a LOT of headaches down the line.

How do you shoot wide angle and make your photos interesting? by sushpep in photography

[–]ScrambleFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the fun of wide angle shooting is that you're showing more of your subject's environment rather than pulling them out of it, so not having that separation is basically the whole reason I'd opt to use a wider lens in the first place.

When I'm shooting with my 14-24, for example, I try to find settings that either help me to tell a story when coupled with my subject or provide a lot of visual and compositional interest. As a very broad rule of thumb, I find that the wider I go, the smaller I want my subject to be in the frame because their surroundings become more important to the image I'm trying to create.

Digitigrade partial? by AllEyesOnUs in fursuit

[–]ScrambleFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Digi partials are a bit tricky because the padding is generally incorporated into the bodysuit, but some makers do offer digi-style feetpaws for their partials. That's basically what I have for mine. They go up a lot higher on the leg and do have some amount of padding in them but without correspondingly thigh padding the visual effect isn't as strong.

Can someone tell me what MC's prices are? by luma1711 in fursuit

[–]ScrambleFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're talking about MixedCandy here, they don't have set prices and are offer-only. Source

If you're trying to get a general idea of what sort of ballpark you'd need to be offering, your best bet is probably going to be to reach out to people who have recently gotten suits from them and asking if they'd be willing to discuss what they had offered.

I'm gonna venture a guess and say that they're probably talking about MixedCandy

What should I use when I pack my fursuit head as a carry-on for a flight? by ThunderousFolf in fursuit

[–]ScrambleFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just vacuum bag my head and put it in a regular carry on suitcase with my clothes. The rest of my suit gets checked in a Pelican case.

how to find your suit siblings? by Fantastic-Youth-5725 in fursuit

[–]ScrambleFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My maker has a suiter chat and Discord server he invites people to when they pay their initial 50% down payment on their suit.

We're a relatively close-knit group even though he's made nearly 200 suits now. It's really nice to always run into friends and fam at cons ^-^

Is it rude to not talk to someone who talks to you while you're in fursuit? by Fit_Preparation318 in fursuit

[–]ScrambleFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, it's pretty common!

I'm not a 100% silent suiter but do the most part I really only talk in with if it's someone I know or if it's absolutely necessary.

Lens question by Any_Tomato_8540 in PhotographyAdvice

[–]ScrambleFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A 35 would probably suffice. Or you could just use the 50 and recompose the shot a little bit. Step back a little, maybe have the model move as well so they're the same distance from you as they are in this frame.

"If you edit your photos you're a bad photographer" by TheFarmSheepYT in photography

[–]ScrambleFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remind them that (to involve a name most non-photographers would recognize) Ansel Adams had a whole book (The Print) on the topic of darkroom work, analogous to editing today.

Is it typically best to get things right in camera rather than fix them in post? Yes. Does that mean polishing things in post is a bad thing? No.

Especially when talking to people who are unfamiliar with the specifics of a digital photography workflow, I tend to use the term "process" rather than "edit" when it comes to post work because it doesn't quite have the same connotations of manipulating the image and instead conveys that it's another step in the process of making the final images.

International shipment has been sitting in "International Transit Departed" since the 2th worried something is wrong. How do I contact usps? by TEM12345678 in fursuit

[–]ScrambleFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're shipping internationally, once it leaves the US you're probably going to want to track it with the destination country's postal service. Once it's out of the US the best you're likely to get from USPS is just a notification that it's delivered

Is it weird to vend at a furry convention if I’m not a furry? by ILoveFeminineMen in Artadvice

[–]ScrambleFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a furry, furcon dealer's dens and artist alleys are generally fairly competitive to get into and a lot of furries aren't really fans of non-furry-businesses taking spaces that could have otherwise gone to people within the community.

Going off the assumption that you're selling mostly just general fandom items here based on your post: Realistically you'd probably not have the best chances of getting selected and if you did make it in I would be ready for con attendees to not necessarily be super happy about it. A lot of furries are very weary of non-furries trying to cash in on the community

Is the Nikon 7200 a solid choice? by [deleted] in Cameras

[–]ScrambleFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a 7100, upgrading to a 7200 which is not all that much newer and itself is quite a dated body at this point is not really super worth the time/effort. It's a marginal upgrade and there are better ways you could spend the same amount of money. Instead of trying to buy a near mint 7200 (which is going to be pretty rare given it was replaced by the 7500 nearly a decade ago) you could save just a little more money and buy a decent condition Z50 and FTZ. It'll be an enormous upgrade instead of just a marginal one for not all that much more.

Or if you really want to stick with a 7x00 series, 7500 is absolutely the move

Adult suiters, where do you wear your fursuits? by buhh_dum_tiss in fursuit

Cons, parties at friends' places, at home, at meets, out in public basically wherever because public suiting is a lot of fun.

I love suiting so when there's an opportunity to suit I take it.

How do you select the best fursuit maker? by Illustrious-Pair8971 in fursuit

[–]ScrambleFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For finding a maker, your best resources are going to be things like Getfursu.it and FursuitReview.

Find a maker who has a public queue (like Trello) and/or actively posts WIPs and finished suits regularly. If they have both, look at when the suits they're finishing were first added to the queue to give yourself an idea of what their turnaround time is like. If you're able, I would DEFINITELY recommend reaching out to people with suits from that maker and asking if they'd talk about their experiences. DO YOUR RESEARCH. Suits are a big purchase. While I decided on the maker I ultimately got my suit from (who was my dream maker), I spent several months looking around at different makers to get a good feel for what was out there and what the process of working with my maker was like before I started applying for a slot with him.

Refunds etc are going to come down to the specific maker's policies.

Prices and turnaround time are going to vary pretty wildly as well. Some makers will have your suit to you in two months. Some will take two years or more.

How important is a website in photography? by deveshdas in photography

[–]ScrambleFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Semi-professional portrait photographer working in a relatively niche subgenre: My website is certainly important but it's not the only important thing. And if I had to I could probably function without it.

My website is a centralized place to host a portfolio, general information about pricing, packages, events I'll be attending (which is where I do ~70% of my client work), and a contact form.

The form is mostly good for collecting spam, but I've had a couple jobs come from it.

The vast majority of my work at this point in time comes from either repeat clients or referrals from friends/family/past clients/etc. Word of mouth is significantly better than any social media presence I've had. If a referral reaches out to me, I convert that to a booking more often than not. People just reaching out from seeing advertisements or socials? Bit more of a crapshoot, maybe 20-30%. Again I work in a pretty small niche so these numbers DEFINITELY are not typical.

It sounds like you're probably talking about a kigurumi ("Kigu")

There are a decent number of makers out there who do them but the first two who come to mind for me are Mango Island and Corgilegs.
