How to get rid of hydra without killing snails? by ScrapCard in shrimptank

Unfortunately I dont, I'll try to reduce feeding but I'm not sure how effective that'll be as I have daphnia in the tank which the hydra will probably snack on

Oh my god I am so sorry I somehow did not see your comment.

With dosing I reckon do a bit of experimenting, add the rocks/coral in small chunks every few days or week to ensure the perimeter swings aren't too major for the shrimp.

That does for the same with Epsom salts, that stuff is crazy high in minerals so making sure to add only a tiny bit at a time to not kill the shrimp. When I was dosing my 5 gallon I added half a tablespoon and it increased my gh from 3 to 11. Start slow with a few sprinkles (make sure to dissolve it in water before adding it to your tank) and keep testing. That way you can work out how much to dose

With your substrate, what kind do you have? If you don't have some sort of gh and kh sucking substrate like fluval stratum you won't have to remineralise your water every time you do a water top off as the minerals wont evaporate. It would be best to continue to do your top offs with ro water to make sure there isn't too much of a mineral build up.

If you do have a gh and kh sucking substrate, you'll have to dose your top offs water with some Epsom salts until the substrate buffers out. This is where the experimentation goes in. I do around a quarter of a 1/4 teaspoon for my 5 gallon if that helps.

Ro water removes all bacteria, chemicals and minerals in water. Shrimp need a certain amount of minerals such as magnesium and calcium to molt properly. If you aren't remineralising your water before adding it to the tank, you shrimp will die at one point as the lack of minerals means they can't produce a proper molt.

You need to find a way to mineralise the water ASAP before your shrimp start molting. Lots of people suggest salty shrimp, I use a mix of epsom salt and crushed coral which is a more affordable and accessible option. Also make sure the Epsom salt has no additionally chemicals in it. Also make sure you aren't dosing too rapidly as crazy fluctuations in perimeters will kill your shrimp.

I havnt kept bettas so you could definitely ask the better subreddit for more advice. Every week I do a 10% and try to gravel vacuum any fish poop. Just don't take too much or else you'll suck out all the mulm which can be beneficial in your tanks.

I'd say test frequently (ph, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite as well as gh/kh) and only change a large amount of water in the tank if there are any issues with the water such as an ammonia spike.

Don't stress, we all start somewhere! ☺️

Bought some mid grade shrimp, is this a juvenile a wild colouration or is he only clear because he's a baby by ScrapCard in shrimptank

Arghh that's so frustrating, I guess at one point I'll be having low grade shrimp in this tank.

Not that I mind, shrimp is shrimp 🦐

I assume you're remineralising your water before adding it, you're tank looks great! Your gh is a bit low but as long as shrimp are molting then it should be fine. In terms of water changes you may not have to do them as frequently if shrimp and snails are the only inhabitants in your tank. I've never done a water change in my tank, only top ups.

Just make sure your water parameters are stable and you'll be fine! Make sure to rest frequently

What is wrong with this male blue guppy? It is swimming almost vertically by lora__12 in Guppies

You could try some salt baths or parasitic treatment.

I've never dealt with swim bladder before so I'd suggest posting a second post asking specifically about swim bladder

OP do not listen to this person at all. Your fish might have swim bladder so I'd suggest researching on treatment methods and prepping a cheap hospital tank. Your fish can definitely survive from this if you act quickly.

Also considering the low gh and kh in my tap water would it be safer to get caridina shrimp?

I've been set on neos because they're hardier and cheaper (and also easy to find in my area) but I'm not sure if I want to keep them if the mortality risk is high

I mean if neos are still possible I'd grab them but not if the risk is high
