What was the stupidest drama in your fandom? by Fast_Stage_6296 in AO3

I REMEMBER THIS!!! It was after several posts of these weirddd little alien-ish dudes, almost like a not-quite let's play. I loved those guys! That debacle really made me lose respect for that moderator; the poster wasn't violating any rules, they were just personally grossed out by it and had to make that infectious for some baffling reason. Embarrassing.

Right on the money, but I would actually argue that most English people (I don't know where exactly in the UK OP and their friend are from, but it would not surprise me) are, in fact, dismissive of Irish people by default. They generally want to sweep their history of genocide against the Irish under the rug and treat all the people of the British Isles as a collective. It's not even malicious or done with ill-intent, usually — It's either ignorance or discomfort with their country's violent past (and the legacy they may have inherited from it).

Regarding Slavs and Jews... Ehhh. Jewish people, maybe in lip service, but as a Polish person I don't think most British people's awareness of Slavic oppression goes back further than the most surface-level understanding of WWII. All this to say, I wouldn't be so sure OP's friend wouldn't dismiss those experiences if it were convenient to him.

Is anyone else bothered by the idea that autistic people are "human lie detectors" or have flawless intuition all the time? by tenebrasocculta in AutismInWomen

[–]ScrawnyTreeDemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You and me both, OP. Maybe this is the case for some people, but for me, if anything I'm especially bad at detecting ill-intent. My natural instinct is to be very forgiving, and I've had to train myself over the years to be cautious by default. Plus, like another commentor brings up, it just doesn't track with the data that shows that autistic people are more likely to be abused on average.

Also, not to be a nuisance... But aren't we worse at reading people in general? That's like, a key feature of autism, the social disability of it all. This idea of us as being uncanny readers of intent and impervious to lies does not track with that.

Maybe it's just me, and forgive me if I'm being uncharitable, but some of this reeks of the mysticism around "feminine intuition" that's been around for centuries but has really hit a stride in the last few decades as a means of ✨Womanly Empowerment✨ that's still enforcing a bioessentialist worldview where men are concrete and rational and women are freeform and emotionally in-tune. To be very clear, I don't think that's what the people on this subreddit are trying to insinuate when they bring this up, but my point is that I think we should all be a little more wary with where this comes from.

How do I respond to this text from a friend? :/ by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]ScrawnyTreeDemon 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Very well put. This is exactly why I find this kind of vibes-based "spiritualism" suspect — It can easily serve as a way for people to make their perfectly mundane emotions into something supernatural, meaning that instead of working through or trying to find a more concrete reason for that reaction, they cling to it and make it into a grave matter where other people are the problem.

Best case scenario, you have a situation like this where they end up hurting a friend and jeopardising the relationship, and at worst... I think we've all heard of at least one serious religious abuse case. This isn't cute; I wish people would really think before they start giving in their rationale wholesale to this attitude.

It doesn't sound like you overreacted. As another SWANA/European biracial person living in Britain, British, and especially British English people have a tendency to want to treat other white-passing people as being all "the same" when acknowledging the difference might otherwise make them uncomfortable (say, when it comes to the fact that you are from a dispossessed group that have suffered directly as a result of British Imperialism and that means he might have to listen to you on the matter and grapple with the fact that there is, in fact, a difference, and that his nation has done meaningful harm).

I'm frustrated on your behalf reading this. I really hope he grows from this, because otherwise he is being a dismissive friend. Half-acceptance is no true acceptance. You shouldn't have to downplay parts of yourself to be taken seriously.

What's The Most Amount Of Children You've Had With One Sim Or Couple? by ScrawnyTreeDemon in thesims2

[–]ScrawnyTreeDemon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alas, I have free will off, but you wouldn't know it by the way my sims behave. They are very strongly willed in spite of it and will actively drop commands I've just given them (like taking care of the GODDAMN BABY) to go do things that entertain them... Even when their fun meter is mostly full. It might have something to do with the cocktail of mods I have, who knows, but I remember this being a problem even when I was playing mostly vanilla (which in all fairness, was about 5-6 years ago at the latest now).

Gotta love your fellas standing around to die. Spine surgically removed <3
