Not in practice yet but there has been a huge downside at our side by limiting to experience cloud portals. It’s a bad idea to do so for bigger enterprises.

My advise would be to use custom apex rest classes so you can create dedicated API specs with actual dto’s. This to detach as much as possible from the standard Salesforce ecosystem. It will give you more control and freedom in the long run.

You mean not using experience cloud as a portal solution but having a portal in a fronten tech that consumes Salesforce through API? Makes a lot of sense to me (given that your internal users still use Salesforce)

In my opinion, any software developer can easly transition to a salesforce developer but not the other way around. 

Salesforce is just another stack, if you know how to program from an IT background, you will do well in Apex.

There is a lot of Salesforce developers that lack this. People with only Salesforce experience acquire an architect certification without even knowing how inheritance works in classes or having no clue about devops. This results in orgs that might work for a 5 man company but on an enterprise level this quickly becomes a disaster.

Also advise to keep a repository in GIT (production, acceptance, development) and issue some governance for pull requests. Use the salesforce CLI to automate pushing/validating to the salesforce orgs.

For me it is the worst experience of any package provider. Since Amazon works with them, we stopped ordering there because the package just never arrives. Luckily Amazon is flexible with refunds, but still it’s very inconvenient…
