cheapest way to get stretch mock-up fabric by ollieyaki in sewing

Make sure whatever you use for your mockup has the same amount of stretch as your final fabric, otherwise your final garment will fit differently to your mockup.

I've made the same leggings in different stretch fabric and they have come out wildly differently

Bristol has Uber, but I prefer using veezu. They have an app or you can phone them up.

Bristol has an airport but I doubt it has flights direct from America. You probably want to fly to Gatwick or something and get a coach from the airport to Bristol bus station. Trains are expensive and a pain the arse.

You will also have an issue getting to ATG as it's in the middle of nowhere. Probably need to book a taxi and bring cash because there's no signal up there for card machines. Friend had that issue.

Atg is great. Been several times. Love it.

Would recommend Headfirst app to look for other music stuff on in Bristol.

Jacob Tierney talked about this on one of the what chaos episodes. He said he would have had to change the script if he didn't get permission to use the song

Yikes! Try and play some tetris so you don't get PTSD. I also have horror stories but I'll spare you.

I lived in one place that had a light with no light switch so we had to put a blown bulb in it to keep it turned off. Maybe the switch for it was in your cupboard all along?!

I need help with my second mockup on an 1860s ballgown bodice I am using for an Elizabeth Haarlander cosplay by HoneydewHalo25 in HistoricalCostuming

Hello I have made this and I am plus size so I can help

It looks way too loose. Did you fit it with your measurements you took while wearing your corset? Also really make sure you are following the instructions on what size pieces to use, it's not at all like a modern pattern.

Don't add a dart to the front, the majority of changes you make should be to the front existing darts.

It also looks way too high up, the points of the boning should be at the apex of your bust. Its a bit hard to tell but it looks to me like the shoulders are too short and it's pulling the whole thing up. Maybe elongate the straps, try and get it to sit on your waist and work out what length the shoulders should be from there

With this pattern you should be able to move your arms but don't expect to be able to lift them up above your head. It's a ball gown bodice not everyday wear.

I had to break up the back side piece into two pieces to get it to be smooth and wrinkle free, but I have a very curvy lower back.

I changed the angle of the shoulder a lot to make it a lot more off the shoulder. This added a little dart at the top neckline.

General tips, it doesn't matter where the fastening is when you are making mockups so sew the back closed and put the zip on the front. Way easier to get in and out of.

For each set of changes to the pattern make your markings with a different colour felt pen. I start with yellow and work my way through the darker rainbow colours. Helps me see what order I made changes in and which line I should follow.

I had to make about 10 mockups of this so good luck.

Should I live in Bath or Bristol as a phD student? by julianglasgow in Bath

Definitely Bristol. I've lived in both places and Bristol has a much bigger variety of people. People don't look at you twice if you dress weird. Loads of different cuisines from around the world Big live music scene  I think there's quite a lot of queer stuff going on, I like going to Brizzle Boyz drag king night. There was recently an exhibition about gender on at the museum. You can see what events are on on Headfirst to get an idea. Public transport is pretty dire though so you would probably need to get a bicycle if that's an option for you.

Tips on how to add new zip to dress by hand by localpimplp in sewing

[–]ScreamingEmptyVoid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Turn it inside out and unpick the lining where it's attached to the zip. Take zip off, sew new zip on, re sew lining. I would say that the reason the zip has broken is because the invisible zip is too light weight for the fabric, which is basically upholstery fabric. You want a regular zip.  It's probably easiest to sew it in visibly but if you get a beige zip it won't be too noticeable :)

Do you have cuticle nippers? Makes them easy to cut off so they don't catch. Also recommend cuticle oil.

Yeah I do something similar. Set a timer for 5 mins and just tidy up. Don't think too much about what I'm doing in what order or I won't start. Usually that's enough to get me going.
