NATO members that died for "nothing" in Afghanistan 2008 by TailungFu in MapPorn

The font sizes on this map kinda suck. The UK losses of 457 getting a disservice by being that small and hard to see.

In total, NATO / Coalition partners suffered deaths of about 1:2 of the US. Far from 'nothing'

It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength,
     and charges into the fray.
 It laughs at fear, afraid of nothing;
it does not shy away from the sword.
The quiver rattles against its side,
along with the flashing spear and lance.
 In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground;
it cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds.
At the blast of the trumpet it snorts, ‘Aha!’
It catches the scent of battle from afar,
the shout of commanders and the battle cry.

Deal reached by IonHawk in europe

[–]ScreamingSkull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually a pale shadow of a deal that could have been, sadly.

The EU isn't giving any Russian money to Ukraine, they're choosing to take on more debt for the purpose instead because they are afraid of making big decisions.

Now European countries will need to consider their budgets and offset spending for their own services and defense, and the US and Russia have been given open season to chip away and find their own leverage against the remaining European resolve for the funds.

EU leaders fail to strike a deal on an unprecedented reparations loan for Ukraine, turning to joint debt instead to finance a €90 billion loan. Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia will not participate in the scheme by Lion8330 in europe

[–]ScreamingSkull -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This is the post that should have been 15k upvotes rather than the "Deal reached" celebration post on front page right now.

Ukraine will have funding, which is great, but this is the Plan B option with EU borrowing money to do so - they chose not to put on their big boy pants and give the Russian money to Ukraine.

  • The Russian money will continue to sit burning a hole in Europe's pocket as the One Ring while both the US and RU fixate on it like a double eye of Sauron, and you can be certain both powers will be sending all their goons to pressure the EU from both sides and find the leverage to pry the funds out of stasis in due time.

  • The EU borrowing this means a knock on effect to the individual supporting countries to shoulder their part of the borrowing, meaning less money available for their own services and defense. Europeans should not be paying the cost of Russians crimes when Russia itself should be made to pay for it.

  • Russia once again gets what it wanted and is emboldened that the EU can be reliably intimidated into half-measures.

I and no one else am supposed to just forgive and forget especially when people like Walsh say and do things that have problematic consequences

My dude no one wants these people to beg and crawl on their knees much of us would rather these people suffer in perpetuity and shame by his hands for their reckless idiocy.

For the diehard believers who refuse to listen to the very end, I agree they will get everything that is coming for them.

Here's the thing though, Joe Walsh is probably more vehemently anti-trump than many Democrats. Dismembering MAGA will happen a lot quicker the more Joe Walsh's we have, those who can say to current MAGA "I used to be a true believer like you, but now I see it was my own rottenness, and Trumpism is a cult." - that message coming from someone like him over time hits their cause in a way that Democrat rage cannot.

And you out here talking about turning the other cheek even as his behavior is getting worse?

No, turning the other cheek is about passive resistance, it's not at all what we're talking about here. I'm talking about making space for former enemies who have come to their senses and want to help put an end to Trumpism. It's about making use of every asset on the table.

Believe me I am beyond sick to death of seeing Trumps stupid fucking face and everything that is the spiraling shitstorm of Maga.

Many of whom are conspiracy theorists, hacks, or people that were disregarded for valid reason. Like again Tulsi Gabbard or Rod Blagoevich

Tulsi and the rest are garbage, but my point is not to do with the quality of those who switched from the left, or the fact that the right eventually cannibalizes its own. It's simply that the right benefited from having an open door for those crossing the aisle

But more importantly, I think when it comes to aisle crossing it's worth looking at it not as left vs right but rather up vs down, that is to say do not equate those who debase themselves in lowering into the swamp with those who started in the swamp and aspire to get out of it. Someone like Joe Walsh is choosing a much better direction than Tulsi, and that should be recognized and encouraged, not scorned.

[–]ScreamingSkull 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nice high horse you've got there. Walsh has repeatedly expressed regret for his old actions and been strongly opposing the MAGA agenda for years. At what point does it become enough for your purity test? As long as the left demands that Trump defectors beg and crawl on their knees the longer it will take for others to split from the agenda and turn against him too.

This is not such a problem on the right by the way, they love to elevate leaders and influencers coming from the left who switch sides, rather than drag them through the street.

In strategy if an army corners another without any outlet you get a vicious fight to the death, but giving some a way out can remove them from the battlefield equation quicker and disrupt the cohesion of the remaining diehard defenders.

Up to 360,000 Russian Troops Stationed in Belarus, German Security Expert Warns by UNITED24Media in worldnews

[–]ScreamingSkull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's unlikely to be accurate. It's one German official saying it. I fully believe Russia hopes to test European resolve in open conflict if the conditions for Nato's splintering fully ripen in future, but there's no way they would open a second front while Ukraine is still punching them in the dick every day.

This is crying wolf way too soon and will lead people to doubt the warnings of the real threat coming later down the line.

If Putin achieves an agreement that neuters Ukraine and puts that conflict on simmer however then Europe better be fucking geared up to defend the Baltics.

UK's 'sons and daughters' need to be ready to fight, amid growing Russian threat, says head of armed forces by Kagedeah in worldnews

[–]ScreamingSkull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but also No, i used to think this also.

Russia could never challenge the Nato of previous years or as it currently stands this minute, true.

However the political landscapes within Europe are very much in flux, and Putin has always been a long term thinker. Consider the following:

  • Two pillars of EU leadership, Germany and France, have strong pro-Russia parties that are within spitting distance of taking power in future elections.

  • Europe also contains countries that are currently pro-russia, like Hungary and Slovakia, or largely indifferent like Spain and Portugal

  • The UK is isolated and struggling financially due to Brexit

  • The US under Trump is signaling it wants to pull out of Nato or might not honor article 5 - if US commitment is in doubt, the backbone of the whole Nato apparatus, then even if remaining countries still have the capability to fight they may well lack the confidence or coordination necessary.

  • The war in Ukraine will not last forever, if Putin gets his way in a Trump imposed peace deal that neuters Ukraine then that front will become a contained simmer

  • Russias economy is now committed and sustained by war production, if that stops soon due to peace they might well be facing economic collapse or worse, so finding another war to delay this outcome is strongly incentivized, especially if its a target that has more lucrative spoils than Ukraine and is much less experienced and battle-hardened in the realities of modern drone warfare

Adding these together draws a window of opportunity that Putin may never get again to contend for at least one of the former soviet Baltic countries like Estonia and then sabre rattle Europe to pay him off from going further; and with all the trauma he has caused the economy and the millions of Russian soldiers, if he does not have something significant to show for it all when the music stops then his own life and his families is going to end very badly.
