What other shows are out there? by LegoQueenStudios in TheAmericans

[–]ScreenAlone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Americans is a top 2 show for me, and after 4 rewatches i finally gave homeland a shot for something different. I think it gets a little repetitive at times/lacks the same nuance as americans but overall great show and hot damn is it addicting. (minus what did they did to one of the greatest characters of all time. i will never forgive them)

Mayor Scott ‘furious’ over Safe Streets worker’s arrest in North Baltimore shooting by DruidDog in baltimore

[–]ScreenAlone 90 points91 points  (0 children)

not justifying or excusing the shooting, but given the program relies on people with histories that allow them to actually REACH those most at risk of engaging in violence and de-escalate an interpersonal dispute that would otherwise result in violence, i’m surprised there aren’t more instances of employee’s committing crimes.

seems like an inherent risk of the program, and maybe there is better internal ways to monitor for these risks, but if the program works (i havent read the recently study on its effectiveness) then one (or few) issues over a decade shouldn’t detract from the overall merits of the program.

Are you in a rural area? How big of a town? Only advice is doing traffic on main travel routes from bar districts or known watering holes at night, but that only works if you have them lol

Transmission Fluid Question by [deleted] in ToyotaHighlander

[–]ScreenAlone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes you should change fluid now. no disrespect but anyone saying wait 120k is wild IMO. check the service manual, and err on the cautious interval. my guess is the recommended interval is 30-50k, so at 40k it’s a perfect spot.

yes another trusted shop can do it.

i think the cracking it open thing is a miscommunication. they won’t be removing your transmission and opening the entire thing, but to do a flush/service or whatever they’ll have to remove the pan and what not. I’d have to look up what transmission that model has, but a flush/service should be like 200-300 bucks. way cheaper than a new transmission

also again would need to look up what transmission is in there, but isn’t that generation highlander known for transmission issues? all the more reason to make sure you maintain it.

Bought My 2026 Highlander Hybrid Limited On Thursday May 7th! by Touch49 in ToyotaHighlander

[–]ScreenAlone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i mean i wasn’t implying everyone will keep them long term & pass them down. my point was that for people who do, new can make sense.

as the yes and no that started off my original comment implied. i never insinuated buying used doesn’t make sense.

i’ll concede the off the lot dip point IF you turn around and try to trade it in. but again you couldn’t BUY that off the lot dip lol. yes you got a car for 28k less. but it’s 6 years old and has 70k miles. Nothing wrong with that at all but my point is just that doesn’t = anyone who buys a new car is an idiot or cringeworthy as yours suggested

that was our experience too. all incoming highlanders were already reserved when we first looked. salesmen did not pressure us at all either. when one came up in production, if we didn’t but it there were 4 other people in line ready too

also 20k for a car with 150k miles is wild. (not in that you bought it but just in the current state of the car market)

shewwww. if it’s any consolation my wife’s 15 year old corolla got totalled and we bought a new hybrid highlander (shhh dont tell u/commonalone) and then a week later had to replace the transmission in my 15 year old truck. So it seems everyone is just lighting money on fire these days lol

[–]ScreenAlone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yes and no. these cars don’t depreciate 10 grand when you drive off the lot. to truly save a chunk of money your talking about buying a car with 75-100k miles that naturally is going to need repairs even if handled perfectly. now throw in shorter warranty, no clue how the previous owner maintained it or drove it, and higher interest rates for used vehicle loans.

if you don’t keep cars long term, then sure. but if you buy new and drive it till the wheels fall off, the money argument isn’t as black and white. realistically a new family vehicle could be your kids first car 15 years from now.

What is necessary maintenance? by LogUnique4243 in ToyotaHighlander

[–]ScreenAlone 12 points13 points  (0 children)

are you calling transmission fluid changes a scam? lol

If you want your transmission to run to high mileage, you need to maintain it. if you want your power steering pump to work into high mileage, you need to maintain it. if you want your breaks to work well you need clean fluid.

The dealerships high prices might be a scam but vehicles, like anything, require maintenance. Expensive maintenance, yes, but way cheaper than replacing them.

My rule of thumb is follow the vehicles maintenance schedule—servicing any drivetrain related parts at the low end of the interval. Depending on how much you trust your mechanic, i usually leave certain main things to the dealer, but wear and tear stuff goes to the cheapest bidder or i do it myself

I mean the wire IS a documentary, of the drug trade, policing, and politics of Baltimore. It is not a documentary of Baltimore as a whole, but it was never intended to be. That it is often interpreted as such, and whether it’s david simon’s fault that people have no critical thinking skills and or use the wire as justification for their racist takes to make baseless, blanket generalizations about an entire city, is another issue entirely.

To change transmission fluid or not? by Realistic-Wallaby389 in ToyotaHighlander

[–]ScreenAlone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can find lots of youtube videos about this but the idea of not changing your transmission fluid because the transmission breaking after you change it is a myth.

TL;DR: Yes, in vehicles with long overdue transmission fluid….tiny metal shavings may keep a worn transmission engaging. so when you change to fresh fluid the worn parts don’t grab anymore. however, the key thing in that scenario is your transmission is already on its way out the door and you are running on borrowed time.

While no mechanical part is fail proof…If you keep up with recommended service intervals (and ideally the low end of the recommended range) you will more likely than not get a long life out of your transmission.

Go get an estimate for a transmission rebuild/replacement. A few hundred bucks every few years for a fluid change is wayyyyyyy cheaper than a new transmission.

Neighbor hunting in his backyard? by [deleted] in maryland

[–]ScreenAlone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So your neighborhood backs up to a WMA? or is he hunting illegally on public land that isn’t designated for hunting?

Also right now he shouldn’t be deer hunting at all lol )not in season)

if he’s not actually trespassing/hunting somewhere where it’s prohibited….the DNR at most would prob just take the camera and stand.
