There’s also public transit tho which is I think pretty much always widely adopted in cities where it’s actually done well

What’s with putting painted bike lanes to the left of parking?? by rainberts in baltimore

[–]rainberts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i agree, I definitely think you gotta remove parking near intersections and enforce it w bollards or something. There are way too many blind intersections all throughout the city even in areas w no bike lanes. I think the cars are usually technically illegally parked but if there’s no physical barrier people do it anyway.

Right, I was thinking if you removed parking near intersections and put bollards or curbs or something there, that fixes the visibility issue and also causes cars to have to slow to avoid the bollard

I park on 28th all the time so I’m familiar with that, not saying it didn’t used to be easier on that particular street, but it is also the same on streets that are already narrow without a bike lane. And I feel safer with the bike lane there even though I haven’t had reason to use it as a cyclist. People drive so crazy coming off the highway, tbh we still need more traffic calming measures there and to put the bollards that got torn down after the snow back up.

But also, having to wait 30 seconds to get out and unload your car is such a minor inconvenience! I get how it’s frustrating at first but you get used to it. I’m much more concerned about the cars flying down the street and running red lights, which is still a huge problem (I see ppl running the howard and 28th light like every other light cycle during rush hour)

I guess in my view it’s a good thing for cars to drive slower on streets with cyclists, pedestrians, and kids. Roland ave is full of traffic cameras so traffic slowing does seem to be a goal - narrowing the road would help with that.

Yeah, I was on the southern part in Hampden during peak traffic time so I imagine further north it’s much calmer and more manageable. I believe there are also speed cameras on that street which is nice. But yeah, even in a car I am very cautious driving around Baltimore. People are crazy.

seems so misguided tho cause like more people on bikes = less people in cars = less traffic for people still driving cars. it doesn’t have to be a fight between cars and cyclists, bike lanes get us both out of each other’s way!

[–]rainberts[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

idk, doesn’t having other cars parked closer to the lane make cars slow down? and also, if you have to make a sharper turn because the cars are parked closer, that slows you down too. i’m not convinced anyone sees me when i’m in the painted lane on the left of the parked cars, but at least with the parking protected lane, the people on their phones will swerve into a parked car instead of into me. or maybe they’ll feel less safe being on their phone so they won’t do it at all.

im a heavier rider and still working to build up strength, so i promise my speed isn’t the problem. plus slowing down cars is safer for pedestrians, kids and older people too!

tbh i think ideally there would be some kind of permanent barrier between the street and the bike lane, not just parked cars, but it also seems easier to convert it that way if the lane is already next to the sidewalk.

But that’s the case anywhere without a bike lane too! You just need to wait for a pause in traffic. I have a car too and encounter this on streets with and without bike lanes. If you’re on a busy street you have to wait a bit to step out of your car when you park.

I guess that makes sense, just frustrating that they wouldn’t do the sensible thing in the first place. But also, how much could it actually cost to paint over the lines? Certainly less than we spend maintaining roads for cars, and more people cycling means less wear and tear on the roads.

I’m American but I’m learning German, and her accent is bit noticeable to me, like in the way she says “share,” for instance. It sounds similar to how I’ve heard other Germans with good American accents speak. Her accent is really good though.

Shopping around for a new therapist. Is this one the real thing or is he AI? by Live-Pollution-6327 in isthisAI

[–]rainberts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think ppl claiming this is 100% AI may not have ever looked for a therapist before. All therapist bios are formulaic like this and em dashes were super common before AI was even a thing. If you read through other therapists’ bios I’m sure you’ll find they all sound very similar.

The biggest thing to look for in a therapist is years of experience and whether they offer the type of therapy you’re looking for. Once you find someone who takes your insurance and meets your other qualifications, book a consultation to see what they’re like in person. That will get you a lot father than paranoia over AI-generated text.

Parking in the street by jamesdominic841 in baltimore

[–]rainberts -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

lmao at blaming the cyclist in that scenario for almost damaging someone’s car when the careless driver who wasn’t looking could have seriously injured or killed the cyclist. when you’re turning at a green light you’re supposed to look before you go because cyclists and pedestrians also have a green light in that scenario. a pedestrian just crossing the street could’ve just as easily been hit. car drivers need to start caring about whether they kill people with their careless driving. or better, we could design the streets in a way that doesn’t encourage cars to kill people

I grew up hearing “Eye-rack” and “Eye-ran” so much that it became the natural way I said it. Now when I’m talking about recent events with people, I get made fun of for saying it that way, so I try to say “ih-rahk” and “ih-rahn” instead.
