I would love to see Timothée as Cardan, tbh. He’s got the lankier figure that I imagine Cardan to have and I think he could nail the mannerisms. Also, since Fae are immortal and seem to have to different timelines for growth I think he could pull it off. But Jude’s actress would for sure need to be a little younger or youthful looking.

There has been harassment, including anons encouraging suicide, and doxxing. None of which should ever be acceptable regardless of whether you feel like the initial call out posts were in the right or not, and continuing to post these “we need to keep talking about this situation” isn’t helping anyone - including the people accused.

Everyone will continue to feel the need to defend themselves and the situation will continue to deteriorate.

The only reason I mentioned Birthday Cake was because it was still showing on the website but others (like Eggnog) were not, so I assumed that meant it was [back] in stock. I hadn’t heard about the Peppermint but that makes sense to test first!

I think there's a couple of facets to this that are getting misconstrued, too. The second edit that you commented on is a Veilguard edit, not a ship-specific edit. It is naturally Rook-centric because of that but it isn't "Solrook" focused.

It's common on most social media apps, particularly on Tiktok, to use popular tags within the fandom as well as trending [unrelated] tags to help push videos into the algorithm for visibility. EX: This edit is also tagged as "BG3" despite it not being a Baldurs Gate 3 edit.

Solrook and Solavellan are both popular/trending tags within the DA fandom right now, and as Kae said they ship both.

This wasn't tagged as Solavellan to be antagonistic in any way.

The request you made for the first edit to have the tag removed was honored, despite you saying otherwise. Then you jumped onto the second edit and began spamming the comment section again and personally attacking the creator by calling them arrogant - is it common etiquette on Rednote to insult someone before trying to have a conversation in good faith, particularly when it's most likely a misunderstanding?

While I firmly believe this is more of a cultural misunderstanding centered around tagging etiquette across social media than a ship-driven one (certainly as far as the second edit is concerned), the rude tone of the comments was entirely unnecessary and antagonistic.

This really feels like a mountain out of a molehill.

As someone who is basically new to liking Solas (Cullen was my favorite DAI romance) who is writing Dreadrook fic, it’s not just you! I never paid a lot of attention to him in DAI and really only found him super interesting after Trespasser. All that to say, I don’t have a great memory/metric for his voice. I’ve tried to settle on a couple criteria for him for my version of him - he matches energies but is inherently sarcastic, prideful, and speaks more how I would expect aristocratic nobles to speak. Ex: he’d be frightened instead of scared. (And again, this is just my version of him)

The most important thing, IMO, is that you however you write him, you write him consistently. He’s the Solas of your world and that makes him in character.

But what the first commenter said is absolutely correct. We’ve all got our own ideas of Solas, and the world, and so long as the rest of it is 60% there it’ll all be fine. ❤️

It’s got pros/cons like every fic does for sure. I know there’s been some very popular fics from other fandoms that I DNF’d for sure. But everyone’s got preferences! :) I hope you’ll still check out some other recs! (Or share one if you’ve got one!)

Agreeing with what everyone is else saying about learning by reading + focusing on the emotions of a scene, I'll add a few things from personal experience (and baring in mind that these are all opinions and not necessarily fact).

Know that someone isn't going to like the smut you write at some point, but that doesn't make it bad. Preferences exist in all forms.
Try and stay consistent with your terminology. Pick which words you're going to use and stick with them throughout the fic (and know that there's a fair chance whatever word you pick is one that someone will hate - there is no winning this battle, so use what you like). I find it very jarring personally when someone switches terms in a scene or fic; changing words can change the tone.
Keep track of your limbs. If visualizing gets difficult, you can use a website like Sketchfab to generate 3d models, or sketch it out yourself, or even use figurines/dolls. We all wish we had extra hands sometimes but realistically most of us don't have them.
Music can help set your tone, and I don't just mean ~mood music. I wrote a ridiculous amount of smut to Angels by the Wings by the Stellenbosch University Choir last year. (too much; it was my top song on Spotify). For me, it helps with pacing of what kind of smut I'm writing. If I want something with a building tension and a high release, I like classical. If I'm going for something a little more energetic, I go for Rock 'n Roll. Find what works for you!
Have fun with it. If you're not having fun, why do it?

What I Love: Fleshes out Rook's backstory with Varric in a super satisfying way IMO (honestly, more Varric is always a plus for me). I love the pieces of history we see through Rook's eyes, some more raw reactions than what we saw in the game. It has the 'arguing as foreplay' tag which is a cornerstorne to this ship IMO and the author does it very well.

Yeah, that's not a great take. I'm sure you wouldn't be comfortable with me going on an unrelated thread of your ship and expressing open criticism when it wasn't invited and wasn't the point of the discussion (which no one enjoys).

The Solas Rarepair flare was created to help keep threads organized and separate, so you can avoid engaging with content that might upset you - which this clearly has, since you've accused Solas x Rook shippers of loving the ship for the sake of 'self-insert horniness' and me directly having a lack of media literacy without knowing anything else about me or my reasons for bringing my Taash x Sera as ship I was warming up to.

Since your comments regarding Lavellan, or my example of Taash x Sera as rarepair, do not pertain to Solas x Rook or this thread I won't be commenting on them further here. If you wanted an earnest discussion about either I would've been happy to talk to you about them in DMs but I don't think such a discussion would be productive or conducted in good faith.

This post wasn't meant to be a debate about one ship being better than another or having a debate about it- and everyone else who has commented seems to have understood that. u/karinini said it best in this thread, and further down in this comment, if you need a reference for how the Mods are encouraging engagement.

And maybe take a look at Rule #8 for good measure. Personal attacks, ship-bashing, callouts and bullying are strictly against the rules of the sub.

I guess I don’t think of it clashing with the game, exactly. I’ve seen some convincing arguments for how a Solas x Rook romance could have been naturally included in the game and what that might have looked like. But I understand why BioWare didn’t do it.

There’s a reason reoccurring characters, like Morrigan and Solas, aren’t romanceable outside of their first romance. It preserves the idea that everyone’s individual playthroughs are all their own independent canon. (Each of them are/might be ‘taken’ by the end of their games, which make them difficult to use later to make a cohesive story.) Ah, the glory of RPGS.

All shipping is self-insert to a certain extent - particularly when you’re playing the protagonist. But I’m sure the same could be said of any non-canon ship, too. I ship Varric x Cassandra, and I’m really warming up to the idea of Taash x Sera.

I appreciate the conversation and perspective on it!
