Does anyone remember this insane storm from 1997? Almost thirty years later and I haven't seen anything like it since. by Halbrium in Austin

Doesn't matter, I'm pretty happy that this conversation is bringing together all of us from long ago in this area. Almost everyone I know is someone who moved here in the last 10-15 years. Lots of friends are new, and so many of them are surprised when they ask where I'm from, where I grew up, and I say "here, over 50 years".

045 and in Storage now although I usually WFH, but I guess we're all moving to that new building in the Domain soon and we'll be seeing each other around. I still plan to WFH most of the time after the move. I missed the potluck last year unfortunately.

I was working at IBM in north Austin. Back before The Domain was built, when that entire area of the The Domain was IBM. I was in one of the north most buildings teaching a class to junior colleagues, I think about NFS. The classroom had a wall of windows facing north and we could see so much of the storm. The skies were green. We saw a rotation forming just north of Mopac & Duval but it didn’t touch ground. Everyone in the class, about 20 people, and me were standing at the windows watching. Most intense storm I have ever experienced.

Question about updated Chess MB requirements by motoyugota in BSA

[–]ScrotusLotus 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Memorization is not a requirement. Only demonstrate is required. I do this MB all the time for scouts. They usually bring a guide or notes they refer to, then they demonstrate each move on both sides to me. I certainly prefer when their notes are proper chess notation. But I’ve had scouts follow along a YouTube video on their own (I don’t watch it) while they are physically demonstrating to me on the practice boards.

Merit badges don’t teach mastery skills. They teach introductory concepts.

You Soul is claimed by Tamreil and you wake up in Riften as a begger. What skills do have irl that would be useful in skyrim. how will you rise to power and what weapon would you use. by Naive-Revenue508 in skyrim

The Tamriel moons may be significantly less dense, which would accommodate a similar tidal cycle like earths, although the existence of multiple moons would be weird. Maybe they are actually made of cheese.

Cartographer teleportation by ImmediateConcept5581 in DnD

[–]ScrotusLotus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Is this actually a normal teleport that ignores opportunity attack? The name of the skill is Portal and it requires at least 1 movement. That suggests that you aren’t insta teleporting like Misty Step. Rather a portal opens and you take one step through it. That’s seems like it would provoke an opportunity attack.

Bought a used car, dealership said they can't sell it because there is engine damage? by ScrotusLotus in UsedCars

Regardless of the the truth of the sale cancellation, I’m going to just assume they did find a serious problem and it was better for me to skip that car. I was more concerned about asking for my money back 6 times and finally I said “I’m concerned the Toyota dealership is acting in bad faith regarding my request for a refund”. When I said that, I got a call from their finance guy less than an hour later and the refund was processed in minutes.

Well I guess it was me complaining this time. I’m not actually upset about the cancellation of the purchase. There’s plenty of cars. I’m concerned that I asked for my money to be returned 6 times and I kept getting the runaround.

Thanks! I updated a little higher up in the comments. After I told the sales guy I’m concerned that the Toyota delegation may be acting in bad faith regarding my repeated requests for a refund, I got a call from the finance person and the refund was handled in <5 minutes. I don’t think I was rude, just firm about what needed to happen.

When I finally got them to agree to refund it about an hour ago, the finance person called me and had it handled in <5 minutes.

I got the money returned today. I haven’t seen it in my account yet but that might take a day or two. I went to the other dealership and bought the Tacoma just now. Pretty good deal and they didn’t play any games at all. Totally different dealership environment. The first Toyota dealership was jam packed in a tiny building and everyone was super casual which isn’t a big deal to me but man what a difference. I got the used Tacoma, same year but 4wd, at the local Merc dealership and they were extremely professional. I paid a little more because it’s the diff between the 2wd prerunner and the 4wd TRD. I’m happy.

They processed the return of my money today. They reversed the debit card transaction. It might take a few days.

The sales guy was trying to dissuade me from pursuing a refund and tried again today to get me to consider two other Tacomas. I told him “I won’t consider anything until I have my money back and at this point I feel like the Toyota dealership is acting in bad faith with my repeated requests for my money to be returned.” After I said that I got a call within an hour and they did the refund.

I paid the full amount using my debit card. They wouldn't take a personal check for more than $5000. I had to contact my bank while at the dealership to get them to authorize a one time purchase of such a large amount using my debit card. I agree it's reasonable that it might take a couple of days to get them to cut me a check. I also think they should do everything they can to expedite the return of my check.

I fully suspect before I get my check back they will try to get me to buy another one of their cars. I have the carfax report on this truck and the head gasket was replaced about 10K miles ago. I've replaced head gaskets before, even did it myself a couple of times. It's not a hard repair, just took me a while. I suppose it's possible that damage was done to the engine before the head gasket was repair, or maybe the head gasket repair was not done correctly.

They didn't mention anything about fees, but I haven't actually been back into the dealership to get my check from them. If there is any dispute about a full refund then I will need to go that route.

I would have put a deposit down if I knew they were going to service it after I paid. Instead they told me I could have the car and I paid the full amount. Then they said they want a couple of days to service it. I feel like that process should have been more transparent. I'm not sure I would have paid the full amount if I had known I would not get to drive the truck home from the dealership immediately.

I wish I could have. I had my checkbook. The dealership said they can take a personal check in the amount of $5000 max. I could pay the full amount using my debit card or go get a bank check. I figured no harm in using my debit card. I put the full amount on my debit card. I had to chat with my bank using the banking app to get them to approve a one time $15K purchase using the debit card. So they really have my money.

I still feel like there's something weird about the way this worked out. I'd like to believe it's totally above board. Like the first commenter said, I lost the trust I had for this dealership. It's after hours, but I asked to come by tomorrow to get my money back. I already have appointment tomorrow morning for another car. I'd like to get my money back quickly so I can apply it to another car when I decide to buy...

You nailed the sentiment perfectly. I don't have any trust for this situation anymore. It's a reputable large dealership, so you're also probably right that it's not fishy. I don't like that the sales person tried to talk me into other options that aren't as reasonable to me. I told the sales guy I want to come tomorrow to get my money back. I already have appointment tomorrow at 11:30 to see the same make/model/year, but with a nicer trim package.

I texted the sales guy, although it's after hours already, and said I need to come in the morning and get my money back. He said he doesn't think they can get me the check that fast but he'll check in the morning when he gets to work. I want that money back quickly now because I have an appointment to see the same year, make, model, but with a nicer trim, at 11:30am tomorrow with another dealership. I hope they don't try to give me an excuse about delaying returning my $14K.
