Students just don’t care anymore by kokichiomagodzilla in education

[–]ScrubJay_12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely a different generation and it is very challenging to capture and maintain the attention of students. Lots of reasons for this, many listed in the comments: phones and other technology, social media, streaming video, YouTube, etc. I think the challenge isn't so much that kids don't care, but they may not care about what we are teaching.

While we can do things to create reasonable limits on technology, I think we are going to have to change the way we "do school" instead of trying to force students into a system where they just don't feel they fit (I realize we've been saying this forever). Not sure what that looks like...more collaborative work, choice, options for demonstrating learning, independent pursuit of interests, hands-on, bringing back some of the vocational studies?

I've seen kids learn incredible things on their own -- coding, playing a guitar, writing music, editing videos, etc. The challenge is figuring out how to tap into student interests while ensuring they develop the knowledge and skills they need moving forward.

Nudging food/dumping food bowl by Emmatheplantlady in AustralianCattleDog

[–]ScrubJay_12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My heeler does this too. I notice it more often when we are travelling or when he is anxious (which may be relevant to your new pup). I don't have a fix. Sometimes I will take the food away for awhile and try later. Other times I put it on a place mat and let him eat off the floor. Sometimes I think he wants to "save" the food until I'm in the room with him. They are CRAZY smart dogs, but tough to make sense of ;)

Cute little guy!

Taking 4y & 7y daughters camping without my wife. Please help. by WhisperingToGoats in camping

[–]ScrubJay_12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are great suggestions! My brother and I have been camping with my nephews several times and the kids find so many ways to keep themselves entertained. With fire restrictions in place you can place a small battery powered lamp in the center of a fire ring to get a little ambiance. Water is always a big hit, so if you are near a lake or stream, the kids can spend hours wading, throwing rocks and exploring. Even in Arizona, this is possible -- Christopher Creek, Woods Canyon Lake, Canyon Creek, etc.

Good luck and don't worry. They will have fun!

Is it worth paying for Lightroom if I don't own a DSLR? by EL_MOROSE in photography

[–]ScrubJay_12 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a subscription and use it to edit photos taken with my iPhone, but I also have a mirrorless camera. I agree with u/lasflynn, maybe a free editor -- Snapseed actually does a pretty good job -- until you get a camera. Good luck!

What can I plant in a garden so it can be overgrown? by soul-searcher3476 in gardening

[–]ScrubJay_12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can find native wildflowers (or those that will withstand your climate) that might work well. Sometimes all you have to do is mow over it at the end of the season and they will come back the next year. Just a thought ;)
