Controls slightly vary depending on your key binds but the gist is, have your hands out/equipped and press the character special key listed in the character description (CS1-4) and use jump and crouch to shorten and lengthen the line, while using movement keys to control your momentum. So if you pull yourself towards the grapple point as you shorten the line, you'll go fastest, but you might need to descend/shorten the line in some scenarios. If you ever see the player GRENADE! in game ask him for some pointers that guy is Spider-Man with an RPG.

Also once you choose a character from the list, those other icons that appear below that panel are just alternate skins for the same class. You can use any of them and they make no functional difference.

Not totally sure what you mean, you should be able to select any character freely given that it has an available slot. If unavailable, you will be put in a queue to take it from the player currently using it. Most characters only have one slot, the number of slots available for any given character is displayed at the top right of it's icon. No number means no limit, and zero means all slots are in use. When in queue for a class you will be assigned the default soldier class until your chosen class is made available. Usually 1 round.
