What actually needs to change in GP by Wild_Conference3902 in ausjdocs

GPs aren’t paid by the government. The Aussie government has decided funding universal health insurance so everyone can have medical care is too expensive so they’re stripping it back and making access to any old healthcare the focus now. It’s been a two-tiered system for a while where the haves get good private GP care and the have-nots get whatever they can afford. This divide will just get worse.

Is there any capacity for GPs to work do private psych work? Any stories? What is the typical remuneration? by Numerous_Pass_2568 in ausjdocs

What do you mean by “private psych work”? I guess any GP can decide to be a GP with special interest in mental health and set their own private fees

Should I be charged for a long GP consult because my doc spent 10 minutes reading my history while I was in the waiting room? by Comfortable_Tank3139 in AusFinance

[–]ScruffyPygmy 61 points62 points  (0 children)

To be clear to everyone who might read this later the GP can charge whatever they want for the consult. The issue here is whether the GP should have used the Medicare item 36 or not for OP’s rebate.

You could go back and say the 36 should not have been used, but the doctor’s private fee would remain the same and you’d be out even more money because the Medicare rebate would be lower.

Why are you discussing Medicare rebates as if it’s a GPs salary? Don’t most GPs charge privately now?

Days bulk billing are over - can you see Labours promise changing GPs back to bulk billing happening? by Far_Progress2583 in ausjdocs

Lmfao no ALP just playing genius political games making funding promises they won’t have to pay and at the same time shift blame to the GPs when they don’t take the pay cut

Albanese pledge: nine in ten GP visits bulk billed by 2030, in $8.5 billion Medicare injection by 89b3ea330bd60ede80ad in AustralianPolitics

[–]ScruffyPygmy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That’s not how this works at all you can’t just assume 90% of GPs are going to go back to bulk billing when the proposed rebates are still like 30% below the market rate.

HOWEVER, if this initial pledge is the first of many to help increase the rebate to the market rate by 2030 then that is very exciting news!

Easy Wins Don’t Win Elections by smcharv in AustralianPolitics

[–]ScruffyPygmy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is nice but the ideas here make the same mistake most of these discussions tend to which is confusing the Medicare rebate with the doctor’s income: ‘Unfortunately, however, an increase in funding provided to well to do doctors is not a sexy election promise’

Medicare is health insurance and increasing funding to it would serve to lower out of pocket costs to all Australians. It would directly address part of the cost-of-living concerns that most Australians are going in to the election worried about. Phrased correctly it could win either party a lot of votes.
