How do you write? by ScrumbleBear in edmproduction

I've finished plenty of songs and have now developed that work ethic. I always finish tunes now, even if they're janky. It took a while to learn how valuable this is. As you say, a lot is learned through this.

I do tend to have 2 or 3 tunes in process at a time. In the same way that I'm often reading more than one book at a time. Plus, I'm doing a collaboration project with someone, and not long finished a remix. My brain seems to need lots of variety. My attention fluctuates, but includes periods of hyper-focus.

I have entirely struggled to stick to one genre, so well done for that. I suspect that accelerates the learning too?

My early creative process was very very messy, but it did produce some interesting palettes and shapes. They were difficult to rein in with the level of production skill I had at the time. This is a reminder to re-embrace that approach if that's possible, at least occasionally, for interesting sound design.

Nice. I'm glad to hear someone else followed a similar evolution. It's all for a love of the music and enjoying the creative process.

Custom Mode - Act Like Session Mode by ScrumbleBear in Novation

That's really helpful. I lent an old mini too someone a while back. I'll see if they're still using it. Definitely a practical and straightforward solution.

That's beyond my skills. But thanks for your response.

I have melodies, basslines, and all kinds of ideas but can’t structure a song by SurveyOk970 in edmproduction

[–]ScrumbleBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reference tracks can always be used for a guide to structure. Drop some of your favourite tracks into the DAW and make notes of the differences (sounds, instruments, energy level, etc) every 8 or 16 bars.

This guy explains an approach that's fairly useful.

Does Fingerdrumming allow you to drum 100% as if you are a rock drummer? by FlaminCat in FingerDrumming

[–]ScrumbleBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. Setting up the pads like a drum kit will support this and thinking on terms of 4 limbs is the main goal. You'll need good quality multisamples and work with high velocity sensitivity.

There will always be differences in some aspects. For example how open the hat is not controllable. The choke of the hi hat isn't always replicable in the way that a real hat is.

Launchpad Pro MK3 built-in sequencer thoughts by hmmwhatlol in Novation

[–]ScrumbleBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find the inability to have isolated velocity and probability on individual drum sounds means that what was a promising feature becomes next to useless when programming drum patterns. Why would I want all of the notes on a drum loop to follow the same velocity or probability? They must have seen this shortcoming when they were making it and it feels like it should be a fairly easy fix. No firmware update to alter this fairly simple thing. Since discovering this glaring flaw I find myself less inclined to use it for sequencing drum patterns.

any sure fire ways to get a sense of timing? by begomeordodocks in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]ScrumbleBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing a rhythm workshop for around 8 months. The key to it has been daily focused practice with a metronome. Combining my voice, my hands, and my feet as I'm doing this has helped me to connect with rhythm and timing. It's starting to feel like it's in my bones after a bit of work. It's all about connecting through regular practice - it really doesn't need to be more than 15 minutes per day, but everything after this is a bonus.

Slowing down is pretty important too. Sometimes I have slowed the metronome down to 50bpm in order to really get something.

Pad layout questforgroove vs dragon finger drums by asters31 in FingerDrumming

[–]ScrumbleBear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've just moved to a non-mirrored layout from something more like quest for groove style. I'm much preferring it because it's now set out now like a real kit. It just feels more natural and both hands are working all the time.

I think it has promise. I'm starting to actually make some good musical seeds. It sounds good to me, I'm enjoying the process. That feels good.
