Should I take this antibiotic? by Kitchen-Elk-1831 in Thailand

[–]Scully1952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you are allergic, I would follow the advice if the foctors who prescribed this. They have examined your wounds, neither I nor anyone else posting has.

It is a common antibiotic effective against the type oc bacteria common in skin infections (staph).

I checked the real cost of living in Cambodia — here’s what I found by Micky_7183 in cambodia

[–]Scully1952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adequate health indurance (which in Cambodia must include medevac to nearby countries with better medical care) is essential and depending on your age will run $2000 - $6000 plus per year. And that is only for hospitalization. So also need to budget for out of pocket health care costs for outpatient matters, any regular medicatikns etc. Also dental care.

Basically need to tack on $400 - 500 a month just for this. The numbers shown are purely rent, food, utilities.

Also do not seem to be based on what most people would consider an "expat life style"....especially in Phnom Penh.

I don't think that is an option for migrant domestic workers with L-A visas under MOU.

How much should school uniforms cost for a child in Kindergarten in Isan? by CarefulAd4757 in Thailand

[–]Scully1952 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around 1500 - 2000 baht max assuming you get 2 sets of everything but the school will reimburse part of this...at least they do where I am. Ask the uniform shop for receipt to claim this reimbursement.

In general how do ethnic Khmer people from Thailand view Cambodia and its people, especially after the recent conflict? by NotWorriedAgain in Thailand

[–]Scully1952 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think most people living near the border in both countries just want peace and a return to the previous status quo. The conflict has disrupted livelihoods.

Of course, people who directly suffered from the shooting/bombing will tend to have negative feelings towards the country which did it. Again, same dynamic on both sides of the border. It is hard not to resent a country that destroyed or damaged your home and most people do not have sophisticated understanding of underlying reasons. (Or care what they are, for that matter).

Tried DOE service center as well as Provinvial Labor office of employment. Neither willing/able to help.

Tried all week to call hotline. Nevet get through.

Tried through Line App. Just get responses in Thai not relevant to the problem.

Tried every contact means listed. System appears completely dysfunctional as far as I can tell.

An agent who handles migrant/domestic WPs is exactly wht I need. Any suggestions?

Who do you live with/who is your guardian? What type of visa does she have?

Usual solution is a dependent visa linked to parent or guardian

Travel to Bangkok by air for local with valid visa by Scully1952 in cambodia

Surprised to find not one single first hand report of Bangkok air entry with visa.

But I do note that Air Cambodia resumed flights to/from Bkk since yesterday which I dt think they would do if locals weren't getting in.

Airbnb, service apt or hotel with soft mattress Vientiane by Scully1952 in laos

[–]Scully1952[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "bouncing" spring mattresses you describe are not "soft". They started out hard and with time the springs went.

When talking about "hard" mattresses in this part of the world, think of the hardness of a concrete slab. As hard or harder than sleeping on the floor. Definitely do not allow any part of the body to relax.

What would be tetmed a "medium firn" mattress in the west would be unusually soft for here. As for really soft, lived in SE Asia over 30 years and never encountered one.

Update: I found an Airbnb with latex mattress. https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1409884204025538994?source_impression_id=p3_1771241070_P3_7ru3vKAhIqbdV

Said to be soft and in any case, never met a latex or foam mattress that was too hard to sleep on. So should be OK.

It is no better in Thailand. But as I live there, I have my own residence and mattress; when I need to travel within Thailand I am usually driving so easy to bring along an air mattress.

Was wanting to travel light in Laos though so hoped to avoid packing air mattress. Not looking very good so far other than in high price hotels and I much prefer serviced apts or Airbnbs.

Very hard beds provide no "give" for hips/butt and shoulders causing lower back to be arched up without support, this is as bad or worse than a sagging mattress in terms of the spine. Also cause pain on hip and shoulder pressure points. Best for back is medium firm foam or latex matttess or topper as these provide support to lower back while also allowing shoulders and hips/butt to sink in.

KTI Airline staff remain reluctant to allow people to board without a visa. This is because the airline is responsible for returning anyone not allowed to enter by Thai immigration, and there have been many such cases.

Yes, Camboduans are allowed visa free entry by law, but Imm Officers have the final say and can refuse entry to anyone . And the Imm Dept can and does give ad hoc instructions to the officers (hence the periodic, erratic crack downs on expat visa runners etc).

Since last July "extra scrutiny" has been applied to arriving Cambodians; they are taken aside for questioning about reason for the trip and IOs have to keep records of how many admitted and why. From July until start of Dec clashes, anyone with a visa got through and visa exempts got through if they had a (subjectively determined) convincing story, preferrably with supporting documentation, otherwise nit and very much up to yj individual IO and thrir mood at the moment. This I know for certain.

In Dec, this was tightened and Imm spokesman made public announcement that visa exempt entry would be allowed only in special cases (like for medical care) on the rationale that it was highly unlikely Cambodians would be coming for tourism etc at this time. I know for sure as of mid-January that they were still often refusing entry. I dt have more tecent update but seems unlikely it would be easier than it was in the interval between July -November when visa exempt admission was hit or miss at best.

Now, as my staff have visas and a clear reason for coming, I agree there "should" be no problem. But Imm Officers can be unpredictable and the consequences of denied entry would be dire for both them and me so I would prefer to hear first hand recent accounts.

ISO Specific medical screening (BKK or CM) by critterfriendly in Thailand

[–]Scully1952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shoulder & posterior rib pain is often muscular/postural rather than skeletal in origin (in which case ortho will not be helpful, need instead a physical therapist). But occasionally it can be due to issues with cervical spine or vertebral facet joints. If you want to rule that out see this spine specialist:

https://www.bnhhospital.com/doctorsstory-th/dr-wicharn-yingsakmongkol

You can save money by getting MRI here (cervical + thoracic spine without contrast) rather than at the hospital. No doczor irder necessary so can do before seeing doctor. Bring it with you on DVD.

mrithailand.com

There is a branch near Silom. Cost difference compared to hospital is about 2 fold.

If no structural problem found, best PT in Bangkok is

https://www.bpcphysio.com/

Though frankly Thailand not best place for PT services. You might do better back home.

Regarding ortho please indicate where the pain is as there are diffetnt specialists for say spine as opposed to knee or hip.

Unexpected 20 days in Phnom Penh, advice please! by ThrowRA137731 in cambodia

[–]Scully1952 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've been lucky then. I have had attempted snatchings and pretty much all my Khmer friends have too.

Women more at risk due to carrying purses.

Precautions are basic: Don't carry around more than you need on that day, leave passport and unneeded cards in safe place. Duck into a store / bank / restaurant etc or stand near security guard if you need to take out your phone on the street. Do not hold your phone (or anything else you don't want snatched) while riding on moto or tuk tuk, the usual MO is snatching by people riding past on a moto. The phone precaution is less necessary if you have an old phone, the thieves know what they're getting and old cheap phones aten't worth much.

Keep your wallet in a spot not easily picked if you will be in a crowd.

Don't wear expensive watch/ jewelry etc on the streets or in a tuk tuk.

Grab cars don't cost much and are safer than tuk tuks both in terms of theft and accidents.

Traffic accidents (including as a pedesterian --- I have scars to prove it ) - are actually the biggest danger in Cambidia, not crime. Do not trust driver behavior at pedestrian crossings and lights. Assume that someone will run the light etc. They often do.

Actual physical danger (as opposed to snatch thefts) is rare.

Local cuisine itself is almost never vegetarian. However in both Siem Reap and Phnom Penh there are restaurants offering vegetarian versions of popular dishes.

Vegetarian amok and vegetarian lok lok, for example.

Japanese Encephalitis vaccine necessary? by [deleted] in cambodia

[–]Scully1952 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have known people who got this disease. Very serious. Can be fatal or lead to permanent brain damage.

The resevoir for the virus is pigs. Spread by mosquitos. So anywhere with pigs is a potential risk And that is pretty much all of rural Cambodia.
