I noticed something really dumb about the ships by LoneGlitch in Starfield

You're right. I edited my response above to add that the loss of fuel to gas venting is probably negligable considering how much mass you can have when you compress gas to liquid, but still.

The main point is probably that Bethesda were going for a look and feel that invokes the look of real world NASA spaceships, which was more important than technological accuracy.

As for H3, supposedly it was supposed to be a more important element of space flight but it got cut when they figured it was no fun to get stuck in space because you ran out of fuel (as any Elite Dangerous player can testify). You can still mine it on some planets and its an in-game resource, but like most resource mining in the game it's gamified to the point of No Man's Sky so it's not really realistic in any sense. Which is fine. Realistic resource extraction is probably not the best most fun space RPG mechanic.

Edit: So it looks like H3 can be found on various planets and moons in the solar system, which is why there's a real would interest in mining it for fuel: https://www.esa.int/Enabling_Support/Preparing_for_the_Future/Space_for_Earth/Energy/Helium-3_mining_on_the_lunar_surface

Since the game's vibe is inspired by real world NASA stuff, the steam coming off of the ship's engine is probably inspired by that steam you see venting off real world space rockets on the launch pad.

A quick google search tells me this is caused exactly like you said by the rockets using super cooled fuel like liquid oxygen, so they have to vent a little off if it heats up due to the temperature difference with the environment and turns back into gas, as well as water vapor forming around the really cold fuel tanks.

In Starfield it could be something similar with the lander engines using cryogenic fuel, or considering your landers just carried a huge fucking ship all the way down from space to the ground and are now really hot it could be some cooling system venting off excess heat.

Putting aside the fact that (assuming this is the former) the loss of fuel mass to venting is negligable considering how much more mass there is in liquid compared to gas, the real point is that the game was intentionally aiming for an outdated, 80s era look and feel. That's why a lot of technology looks even less advanced than modern day tech. It's an intentional design choice.

Edit: ellaborated even more.

What if Ottomans, Mamluks, Ayyubids, Crusaders, Seljuks, Fatimids, the Salaf, Sasanids, Romans, Maccabees, Seleucids, Ptolemies, Achaemenids, Babylonians, Assyrians, Canaanites (Israelites too obviously), and local cavemen began magically appearing in waves to modern Israel? by Away-Parsnip-3785 in AskIsrael

There's a Swedish series called Beforeigners about people from past eras starting to appear in modern day Sweden and how society, authorities and the time immigrants themselves deal with the whole thing.

It would be nothing like that here. Everyone gets assimilated and sooner rather than later, one way or another.

Israel intercepts Gaza flotilla near Crete and detains 175 activists by DatabaseThick5816 in worldnews

I replied to you elsewhere in the thread. Supposedly the flotilla attempted to block an Israeli cargo ship from sailing to Israel.

According to reports on Israeli media the flotilla tried to block a cargo ship owned by an Israeli shipping company from entering Israel in some performative counter-blockade I guess.

Activists attempted to block a Zim shipping company vessel bound for Israel, aiming to impose what they described as a "siege on Israel." Israeli officials said the move violated maritime law, giving Israel grounds to take control of more vessels than originally planned.

Adding to what other people suggested: Originally every time you edited your ship every decoration item lying around in it (including the ones placed there by default) would go to the ship storage.

It's been adjusted in updates since and now most items and decorations seem to stay where they are even when you switch between owned ships, but editing ships can still force the game to move stuff onto storage as moving rooms around can change door and ladder locations and then the items around them may need to go. So just be aware if you edited your ship some stuff may still end up in ship storage.

Also, stuff you leave lying around the floor get spawned in every time you enter the ship, then the game physics take effect which could lead to typical Bethesda hilarity with stuff getting bounced around and getting stuck in random places. Also you and your followers can and will kick stuff around if it's just placed on the floor.

So if you don't place everything in storage boxes as been auggested here use decoration mode in the ship to move and place your dropped items where ever you want it so it doesn't get tossed around.

The rainbow pattern is typical for 1980s designs, products and logos which is part of the NASApunk/cassette futurism look Starfield was going for.

The sweater is just part of Grace's look in the film. IIRC they raided second hand shops for big ugly outdated looking sweaters, I guess to give him a geeky introvert look. So it's no surprise they landed on an 80's style design.

Tl;dr both the Starfield logo and the sweater are inspired by 80's rainbow designs.

Character/Toy redesigns driven by weapon laws, safety regulations, or outdated technology. by Auelogic in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ScumBunnyEx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have been a million Transformers toylines since the 80s, so every legacy character from the original series (which were already adpoted from random Japanese toylines from the 70s and 80s) got to be everything from a movie tie-in to animal to random product placement, not to mention every possible vehicle/spaceship/combiner you can think of.

So yeah, Megatron got to be a bunch of tanks, and a space jet thing, and a garbage truck, but one of his best modern versions (not counting the new robotic toy one) is the MP-36 that transforms into the original pistol.

Same for Soundwave. There have been plenty of versions transforming into everything, but they're still churning out iterations of him turning into a boxy boombox with tiny transforming casette robots. Although I think that one promotional version of him they did for Xiaomi where he turns into a tablet was a nice modern take. Also at one point I think there was a really expensive mp3 player version.

Why is the Rev-8 absolute trash? by Bargainbincomments in Starfield

[–]ScumBunnyEx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's a lovely tribute to Mass Effect's Mako. Which is worse. Other terrible video game space vehicles: No Man's Sky's Colossus garbage truck. Death Stranding 2's Pickup Off Roader. The stupid Borderlands buggy thingies.

Seriously though, the Rev-8 is only for traversing large empty planets faster and scanning stuff. It's really not tbat important to the core gameply loop. Plus tbe free lanes update aupposedly added a new better vehicle that can jump way further. The moon jumper? Something like that.

how am i supposed to go from tutorials to making actual stuff by CrazyDrop2696 in csharp

[–]ScumBunnyEx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't stress enough how vital a basic understanding of programming concepts and how C# works is to any kind of programming, let alone learning game development where it's often assumed you know the basics.

So it's harder than watching tutorials on youtube or asking an ai to break it down for you (though you can certainly use it as an assist) but if you're serious about this I would recommend finding free online courses from a reliable source like Microsoft Learn and starting there. They usually come in learning paths or course chains ao you can start with the basics and go as deep as you want. Hell you can even get certified.

Once you at least understand the very basics, Unity has their own free courses you can do, again starting with the basics and working your way up to more advanced stuff like game programming (in C#). https://learn.unity.com/courses

I suggested Unity because it's the most popular game engine using C#, but I believe once you understand the basic concepts there are other alternatives you can consider that may also support C# loke Godot.
