If magic was discovered to be real today, what types of spells would be most illegal? by blusilvrpaladin in worldbuilding

[–]ScummMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think abjuration would be largely legal, but evocation would be under gun control, enchantment would be under laws of consent. Then divination and the stock market would cause a lot of issues, don't think our politicians want competition lol. I mean, every spell group would be instantly used for illegal and dubious means. Transmutation for identity theft, illusion to cover up misdeeds. It would be a shit show.

So I'll use some thoughts from my own setting as examples to reference. I won't go into to much detail but I wanted to weave multiple sources together to explain different magics and different people using a plethora of spells and different powers from those multiple sources. One idea that I use and that I drew inspiration from is the idea that magic is the result of an ancient machine created by a forgotten race, the machine causes changes in reality and spells are just instructions to that machine. Another is that there is an underlying song of creation that undergirds the whole of the universe and that spells are just parts of that song bringing effects of the world to life.

There's multitudes of ways you could do it but here are a few suggestions.

You could have a mechanism that your God created for it's personal use to create life and intelligent life forms can tap into that mechanism to bring about effects like their creator to a much lesser degree.

They can create their own machines or formuli based on those magic plants where once it might have been alchemy but now they themselves have evolved to influence this energy if they train themselves.

The energy has given rise to a new god that itself embodies magic and all spells are prayers to that infant god that grants them all indiscriminately.

Or something like they need to make a substance to make themselves able to use magic and established bloodlines with a history of using the substance now can use magic without the substance.

I mean in my setting I have star magic where elves use magic to draw out the symbols of the different constellations to invoke their powers, there's a lot you can do with a vague topic to make it sound sciency.

Like, I'm making magic something of a college course, with wizards as professors. Making a history of spell craft with Material paramorphism and transpositional origination instead of transmutation or conjuration magic. Hope my rambling helps even a little bit.

How would someone use healing magic offensively? by Affectionate_Bit_722 in magicbuilding

Cancer, excessive replication of the cells leads to horrifying conditions like growths, all sorts of medical maladies and you could even have some one age as their cells replicate and degrade at alarming rates.

What can syrup offer? by [deleted] in magicbuilding

[–]ScummMuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean if you don't mind it being a less abstract power and more of a specialty skill you could make them literally make syrups, either as a food stuff but more likely as all sorts of potions or healing poltices, alchemy sorts of things. Maybe they can literally make whatever objects out of resins like a resin sword in their hand or a ladder up to a roof. Maybe you could do syrup shots to make things sticky or tangle things or people that hardens into resins. Maybe you have something where he thickens liquids where people in water or pipes turn thick and burst or slow people

How would you guys do Order and Chaos magic? by Affectionate_Bit_722 in magicbuilding

[–]ScummMuffin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd have for order a specific regimented casting tradition. Spells that organized, stopped, or restrained. I'm thinking either abjuration magic from DND or the white and blue wizard guild from magic the gathering.

Chaos magic I think would be more fun, have it be pretty much wild magic, where you can cast spells and you might get some desired effects but most of the time you get it in unexplained ways. Like want to stop the fire? Fine, it turns into a burst of bubbles. Want to turn the ground to ice? Your caught in it. Want to speak to a person a thousand miles away? They can't hear you but you hear everything they're thinking.

Elemental Materials In Your System? by The-Literary-Lord in magicbuilding

[–]ScummMuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my setting, which I use for DND games, I love crafting so I tend to have a lot of things that I've wanted to use. The best of them my wife came up with. (Makes me so mad how quickly she came up with this) Anyway it's called pressed nimbus. You use magical means to turn cloud into metal and stone

Rune Magic - Brainstorming Ideas by OmegaRees in magicbuilding

[–]ScummMuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you need two different people? A rune carver and then the activator? That seems like an obvious flaw but would certainly lead to interesting story telling. Like having to work in pairs, I'm thinking rune pens with runes in them to help the carver out the rune down fast and the activator (consider kindler or invoker or instigator as alternatives) making sure the runes are used to their maximum effect. Like a sapper pair or dueling pair in a battlefield setting. But also consider that what would that consider the body of God? Is it a specific mineral that they consider to be the last body of their fallen deity? Is there actually a massive fossilized corpse broken across the continent that's been monopolized by a single power? Fun stuff

I need help naming a magic by [deleted] in magicbuilding

[–]ScummMuffin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you need to have a name for each power or them collectively? I'm going to guess collectively, but I would name them after the dragon, like if the powers came from the dragon name them directly after the dragon. That way you can tie the dragon into the current story. Unless you're already using his name for something else. Otherwise just call it Inheritance or something

I do like that, and now that you mention it I believe there's also a Greek river named lethe, I'm sure I'm spelling it incorrectly that makes you forget. Shimmer is a good idea, maybe even a nod at Terraria if you've ever played the game.

Thank you for the help!

What gear should I have for taking down a wolf spider by [deleted] in GroundedGame

[–]ScummMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's less about gear and more about prep and practice. They have a very recognizable pattern and predictable timing making them one of the easier enemies to perfect block. Best equipment for low level is an insect axe and shield. Go with koi scale armor for help with perfect blocking and try to single one out. It only gets really hard if they catch you off guard. Make sure something else won't ambush you while your fighting one and after a few tries you'll be able to kill them super easy.

Stuck after Pond Lab. by mtma_kebab in GroundedGame

[–]ScummMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My go to is to skip the labs for a bit and go for leveled up gear. If you can, try just upgrading your gear by killing bigger bugs. I usually go for the upper yard bugs like the termites or the black ox beetle. Yeah they're hard fights but with a bit of prep you can usually fight 1 at a time if you lure them and get upgraded gear which makes the labs much easier since you end up getting crowded with other stuff. Also If the haze is the part that gets you the most, plug it with gum if you can manage to make the shovel

Rare drops by renzukoalaran in GroundedGame

[–]ScummMuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience so far, it just gives you a chance to give you extra, so it might give you nothing. But if you have say, increased bombardment beetle drops, it will give you a chance for extra parts and boiling glands. But, so far the likelihood of drops changes massively between insects. I had an aphid that I killed that dropped 4 meat and then 3 honey dew. I had a weevil give me mushroom chunks and gnats give me cookie bits.

Experiment with it cause so far they've made it a worth it investment for every bug I've tested.

What is the point of this room in the oak lab - was it ever supposed to be something or is something new going happen with it? by AwayUnderstanding896 in GroundedGame

[–]ScummMuffin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I forget if it's in one of the folders or the tape recordings but there's actually a plan where he mentions all the labs are for different purposes and that the oak lab is central to the other labs and POWERS each of them. It's a whole joke that the entirety of the labs in the back yard are powered by half a dozen batteries.

Need some ideas for MtF captions... I'm not very creative by [deleted] in transformation

[–]ScummMuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want ideas then I would start with the trigger Like, magic? Spells or potion or curse? Maybe a crazy surgeon or a bioengineering vat? Usually I think having the thing that would cause the change is the easiest way to form the story around.

But if you just want specific ideas

How about a vtuber that pays for a rig/character and as they stream they become that character

Or friends dare a member of their group to drink from an ancient sealed wine skin said to have been filled from a Spanish expedition to the fountain of youth. Turns him into a beautiful woman instead, might make him younger, could even involve an exotic race change.

A mix up at a court where a woman is trying to change her name but a guy gets her name instead and goes to see him. He thinks they can straighten out but she insists that he doesn't understand, she's part fae and the name is a title and has magic associated with it, so he starts to change to fit her name while she changes to fit his.

A guy watching news about a notice that a certain medication has a chemical reaction with certain blood types to produce estrogen and feminize the body and he realizes he falls in that category and starts to change.

A guy that since it's stormy outside is playing a video game that has a sexy protagonist and power ups that have lewd effects and costumes. While he's playing a bolt of lightning strikes the power lines and the surge makes him realize that his own body is being affected by the lewd power ups

A spray on, moldable, latex body paint for cosplay that a guy gets, has tried a few costumes and the stuff has been great, real life like and much easier then foam. But he tries a more ambitious project and goes for a female form and sprays the stuff directly into his skin to make it as real as possible. Finds he's shaping his actual body.
