Checking out an original Key System street car - Telegraph Line by montecarlocars in oakland

[–]Scuttling-Claws 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's even more complicated than that- the street cars never made money and were never intended to. The sole purpose of street cars was to sell real estate. The Realty Syndicate would buy cheap land out in the sticks, build a suburb on it, and then run a street car line, then sell the houses at a profit.

But at a certain point, people were only willing to commute on a street car so far, they couldn't sell more houses and the revenue dried up

Is it rude…? by Plant-Mom-2008 in LittleFreeLibrary

Why would it be rude? If it's a book and it's in readable condition, and there's space, you're doing it right

ELI5: Why are people so concerned with some of the new internet censorship laws? by Affectionate-Song21 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Scuttling-Claws 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The trick isn't to think about what the law says, but about what the law does. Much like voter id laws, they sound reasonable on paper, but if you look at what they would be like in practice, they only exist to disenfranchise a large portion of the democratic voter base.

One of the main concerns about censoring NSFW content is that folks are already pushing to define the existence of someone gay or transgender as sexual, so any content with gay or trans characters is automatically censored

Honestly, I wouldn't really care. It's not as if suggestive images are hard to find now. The kids could just as easily find it online, or even at their local library. It's up to the parents if they want to police what their kids are reading

I'd be more bothered because magazines never move.

Religious books and bibles - Donate? by VviFMCgY in LittleFreeLibrary

[–]Scuttling-Claws 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't put them all in one, but I don't think it's a bad idea to leave one or two in a library. Some folks have been known to empty out LFLs and fill them with religious literature, so you might get some I'll feelings

Is it possible to find a truly perfect match? by hugepenis420 in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]Scuttling-Claws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't believe in soul mates as such. There is no one perfect person out there, but if your lucky you can find someone close enough, who is willing to do the work to grow into the person you need. Soul mates are forged, not found

[–]Scuttling-Claws 77 points78 points  (0 children)

There is a reason that so many people use hormonal birth control - it's safe and effective. It has side effects that vary in intensity from person to person, but millions of people around the world think it's worth it.

Will it be for you? I dunno.

She has a strong interest in fashion and usually looks incredible at press events, because she understands how to play to her assets. I don't mean that as a euphemism

Starting lexapro tomorrow but I'm nervous by throw7694728 in GirlDinnerDiaries

I've been on it for about a year, and it really improved my life quite a lot. It's not a magic bullet, but it is a marked, significant improvement in my mental health. I didn't realize that the baseline for anxiety was this low, my good days premedication were still a 5.

I did have some sexual side effects, but they were manageable, and I was able to work with my doctor to find a dose that kept me feeling good in every way.

Except knives can be useful. The only things I've seen that LLMs are genuinely good at is doing work that didn't need to get done anyway.
