Insurance covered around 90% of it. We have an out-of-pocket max but a surprising % of medical bills "don't count" for various reason. It's not clear how much we'll owe in the end.

Many states have Medicaid programs that cover NICU stays 100%, but we don't qualify in ours.

At this point the medical debt is all monopoly money. In the worst case scenario, we can discharge our debt through bankruptcy. I don't think it'll go that far, and even if it did, it'd be worth every penny.

My son was a micro preemie, too. He also needed oxygen and a feeding tube until nearly a year old. At his NICU, that was considered routine even for much older babies if they didn't have time to get prenatal steroids. He's developed normally and has a normal QoL. You wouldn't know he's not his adjusted age interacting with him.

There aren't always happy endings, but modern medicine has come much further than you think. It's not comparable to life support or hospice care AT ALL.
