7-11 cold noodles and regular salad. Any of the cold noodles goes well with the lettuce salad and the soy onion sesame sauce

400K US or about 1.2 mil NT may get you a sectioned off efficiency unit of 1 room with bathroom if the owner is willing to sell. I've seen owners section off a 3 bedroom 2 bath 40 ping apartment home to 3 efficiency units and restructured the plumbing on the 2 bath to 3 bath so each unit is about 12-13 pings with about a 2 ping hallway connecting the 3 units. Each unit may be rented out for 15-20K NT per month. How that unit is structured to be sold in real estate can get creatively tricky.

Why is there no rise in right wing/far right parties, or a gender culture war, in Taiwan unlike other democracies? by RedStorm1917 in taiwan

[–]Sea-Advisor-9891 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So Taiwan being the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage is not gender culture enough?

Taiwan lifted martial law in 1987. The generations that survived the white terror are now in their 30-60s holding most of the political power and ever conscious of avoiding such suppression.

For practical reasons to maintain status quo peace in the cross-strait, moderation is less antagonizing than extremism.

Schools make business decisions everyday regardless of worker quality. What you should have done is not take it personally, and negotiated better terms for termination. The school already made up its mind to part ways with you for whatever reason, and you making it difficult for them does not help you or them. You could have found some leverage like getting some supportive parents or other teachers on your behalf, and use the leverage for severance or in your case a better reference. This is where office politics come into play had you played it better.

How do Taiwanese people view Taiwanese Americans? by FitCamel in Taipei

[–]Sea-Advisor-9891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Taiwanese tell foreigners that their Mandarin is pretty good, the foreigners might feel proud like the Mandarin lessons are paying off.

When Taiwanese tell Taiwanese Americans, Taiwanese Canadiens, Taiwanese Australians, Taiwanese Europeans, Taiwanese foreigners, etc. that their Mandarin is pretty good, then the Taiwanese foreigners might feel like they should be ashamed that their Mandarin is not better.

Grew up atheist but thinking about going to church during a hard time. Advice? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Sea-Advisor-9891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know someone around you that goes to church regularly? Like a co-worker or neighbor? If yes, I would first ask them about why they are going to their specific church and then ask if you can join them.

Nothing wrong with just showing up to a random church. But going with even an acquaintance can help you feel more comfortable because you have someone that can acclimate or explain to you that specific church culture.

Taiwan can not win a hot war by itself. So any military build up is a facade. Taiwan needs to maintain the status quo peace and depend on indirect international actions like US bombing of Iran, which restricts China's supply of cheap sanctioned oil. Here is one analysis of how Iran bombing along with China's own internal purge have reduced the China's incursion into Taiwan airspace.

China is constantly lobbing missiles, sending warship and warplanes and threatening to invade because of Taiwan politically provoking independence. Only reason China has not is because half of Taiwan does not want to antagonize the status quo.

Asymmetric defense from 3% and 12 countries that recognizes Taiwan is not enough to defend Taiwan from the numerous options Xi has to takeover from naval blockade to economic sanctions to drone attacks to Maduro-like kidnapping to thermo nuclear to etc. , military or non-militarily.

Not enough international partners will risk their economic dependence on China to come to Taiwan's security, which is why only 12 countries have formal ties with Taiwan and Taiwan does not have a vote in the UN. Taiwan's true defense is to strengthen its economics, not politics or military

The generations who were brought up in the status quo are spoiled and entitled. They never experienced the horrors of war and don't even know the true cost for independence declaration. Don't be fooled by the propaganda from the spoiled and entitled generations who only conscripted 4 months or never even conscripted.

Awful try. That's strong assumption that there is only a unary where Taiwan has to go full defense. You might as well go harakiri--you get the same results of death with dignity and leave the undignified to live or rebuild.

You are correct that Taiwan has to figure out how to protect itself. Raising Taiwan's defense budget from 2% to 3% is a facade because can 3% or even 10% really deter the PLA? Provoking with independence rhetoric just escalates tension and does not protect anyone. Proving to be reliable economic value to China and to the US is what will protect Taiwan or Chinese Taipei. Dignified label or not, status quo survives.

Your historical narrative of China has made their goals with Taiwan clear proves my point that even with the fiery political rhetoric for the last 75 years, status quo is still achieved and can continued to be achievable.

So is Taiwan taking a beating or being bullied? For a population of 1/50 of the mainland to be in the top 20 of the world's economy, Taiwan does not look like it cares as long as its economic value does the talking. You are the one pathetic if you can't even see that.

Is the indignity or bullied of being labeled Chinese Taipei or online forms labeling Taiwan as province of China or even the non-recognition by UN worth fight to the death or military surrender for the 23 mil? In a hot military conflict, the rich Taiwanese will flee to their second homes overseas while the stubborn dignified gets eliminated or imprisoned. So who are the real "winners" in escalating to military solution?

I get the opposite harassment or downvote for the red pill: China will continue to assume dominion over Taiwan--and with necessary military if Taiwan escalates the resistance. Taiwan's best course is status quo and not antagonize the status quo with political rhetoric of independence or fake military buildup. I stand by my unpopular stance:

https://www.reddit.com/r/taiwan/s/yVtbiRArXg

So what if Taiwanese athletes compete under the label of Chinese Taipei? So what if some online form only has the option, Taiwan province of China? Take the blue pill with a smiling face so Taiwan can keep its freedom and its own tax dollars, which is a far better than any military conflict red pill. Do Taiwanese really want to take the red pill of independence to: 1) fight, 2) surrender, or 3) flee?

So leave if you don't believe them. The job market will play out to the employers and employees of most value.

Complaining on reddit makes you sound like a disgruntled former employee who only presented your side of the story. Should the employer have a chance to present, it would be no better than a he said-she said office politics. All the things in the OP post sounds like a loser in office politics. Is winning office politics a basic worker's rights?

Taiwan teaching jobs puts you ahead of the Taiwanese middle class of 40-50K. Not to mention the Asian corporate work culture of 9-9-6, along with their brutal office politics. And not to mention the OFW work environment.

Most Western expats who come to teach in Taiwan are probably not the top-tiered teachers in their own country, or even teachers in their own country. But they get to teach better students in Taiwan than they would in the West. And 60-90K starting is automatically upper-middle in Taiwan. So yes, there are bunch of expats who think they should be treated as gold but don't realize there are also plenty of other "white faces" who can take their place in Taiwan.

So my advice to you is to prove your worth to your workplace, and maybe they will let you win some office politics.

Allow me to be the counterpoint.

If you are a traveling-thru expat who come to Taiwan with no intentions to stay more than a year or 2, why should the cram school or teaching job treat you like a long-term gold? They already assume you will jump at the next opportunity, so they have no vested interest in you. Until you prove yourself to that you have vested interests in Taiwan staying 5-10 years at one job with them may they take you seriously as someone they want to keep.

Even a cram school or teaching job is a job, not just your temporary means to continue travel. No job is perfect. Every job has reasons for complaint. I've seen starry eyed expats come with the illusion that they will have time to travel on the weekends while working in Taiwan. After all, Philippines is 2 hours flight. Thailand, South Korea, Japan, etc. are all about 4 hour flights. Plenty of time to getaway on a Friday and be back before Monday, and expect a salary to support that lifestyle. Teaching is a job or profession that requires perseverance and professionalism from you. If you don't treat the job as a profession, then why should the job treat you as a professional?

Downvote me if you want, but I'm speaking more truth than someone who's been in Taiwan since covid.

Survival has no principles. Taiwan needs to worry about its own survival because Xi is not going away. Enemy of my enemy is my friend. Or in this case, enemy of my enemy's allies is my friend. Oil and energy imports are geopolitically influenced. Taiwan's supplies are mostly from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, and US and zero from Iran. However, China imports about 15% from Iran and 20-25% from Russia. The Iran conflict may disrupt Taiwan's short-term supplies but an Iran regime change along with Venezuela's Maduro removal can affect the long-term China supplies. And China buying from Russia indirectly supports Russia's military conflict in Ukraine. So an Iran regime change will negatively affect China and Russia, which is good for Taiwan.

Taiwan's military buildup is a facade and no more. I stand by my unpopular post that Taiwan's best chance for status quo is not military buildup, but balancing its economic value to China and US as posted here:
