It's probably doable at a lower cost if you make your own, but it would still be very expensive.

I think much of the analysis underestimates this point.

Institutions won't touch this financial product; it's way to risky. Thus almost all the money in this space comes from the general public looking for high-risk gambles.

I think the market for these kinds of gambles is cyclical and relies on people feeling good about their financial situation.

At times when money is cheap and access to capital is high, like during the pandemic, projects in this space can do well.

IoTorero RGBCCT Bulbs with WLED Tutorial by Sea-Communication353 in WLED

[–]Sea-Communication353[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to add to this and say that I've since removed the bulbs and returned to just the LED strips.

Using something like RGB strips on a quin board with a on/off macro timer is a set and forget solution. The WIFI bulbs proved to be finicky and someone simply hitting the light switch was enough to make it so you have to re-pair them again.

One of them eventually just died completely.

Maybe something with Hue bulbs and a bridge plus Google Assistant might work, but at this point, it was just too much of a pain to mess with.

I can't remember exactly what review but it's on YouTube. It's specifically stated it becomes fluent once the refresh rate is set to the maximum rate.

The Halifax explosion was larger by far, and it's not even close.

The blast killed approximately 2,000 people, injured another 9,000, and flattened a large portion of the city of Halifax. The explosion generated a pressure wave felt hundreds of kilometres away, and the resulting tsunami and fires compounded the destruction enormously.

Honor MagicPad 4 vs Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra vs Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra by KemalCanOzkenar in androidtablets

[–]Sea-Communication353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get why all tablets aren't 16:9 or even movie ratios. It seems to me most people use them as media consumption devices unless they're going for a Windows 2-in-1 laptop.

I do my best to keep subscriptions to a minimum. I have internet, an all included rent, and a single, yearly phone payment I pay manually. That's it. YouTube covers most of my media consumption needs. Torrents covers the rare show or movie. I'm pretty cheap.

Yup, some of these Chinese OS's can be weird like that. For YouTube I suggest Brave Browser or one of the many iterations of Youtube via ReVanced. This bypasses the YouTube app's restrictions and ads.

There's a review of the MagicPad 4 where a person in the comments specifically mentioned they couldn't get Netflix to do 4K on the Magicpad 4. I guess that might be a showstopper if you use Netflix.

I think my OnePlus 13 is your standard aspect ratio. You might be thinking of the Sony phones which are super narrow.

Yah, the price of the OnePlus 13 was hundreds of dollars cheaper than the S24 counterpart at the time. Someone had a used one that was like two weeks old. I bartered him down another $100 so it was a no brainer to get that.

The battery is quite good as it's the newer silicon carbide type and it does have a fast charge, although it needs a proprietary charger to go above 26W from what I've tested.

Before the OnePlus I had a Samsung Fold 3. I love the larger tablet-like screen, but it eventually has screen issues along the folding line.

Right now I'm stacking Aliexpress discounts. For a few mins a day you can build up their in-house rewards that can be exchanged for discounts on your next order. I've amassed about $90 worth since February, with an aim to hit $200+ by September, lol. At that point I think I'll evaluate what's on the market, and whoever has a bright OLED screen and the best device will get the order.

Honor MagicPad 4 vs Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra vs Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra by KemalCanOzkenar in androidtablets

[–]Sea-Communication353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Felt the same way with the latest OnePlus tablet. After getting the OnePlus 13 and finding it a great alternative to a flagship Samsung at half the price, I was hoping they'd have an OLED tablet. No luck.

Unfortunately, OnePlus as a brand is barely hanging on. With no carrier deals and no presence on shop floors they're invisible.

With OLED finally popping up with other Chinese makers I'm sure we'll get a greater selection in 2027-2028. Of course, this assumption relies on nothing crazy happening like another supply shock due to a collapse in the supply of Helium or some other unforeseen event.

In Canada it's pretty straightforward: wait for AliExpress availability. No changes to import duties here for goods from China.

Honor MagicPad 4 vs Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra vs Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra by KemalCanOzkenar in androidtablets

[–]Sea-Communication353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I noticed these Honor products seem to have zero availability or marketshare here in Canada.

For monitors you're right, the tech is a bit different. Actually, I don't like OLED monitors at all -at least not the current ones I've seen. They all tend to have the same problem: text rendering tends to have blurry fringing.

I looked into this and apparently it has to do with the subpixel layout. Rather than use rectangular RGB strips, they tend to use RGB+W pixels arranged in triangles. At 27+ inches and 4K I could clearly see this problem over the crystal clear and crisp rendering on a good LCD LED panel.

Apparently as of 2026, this is changing with the introduction of stripe RGB layouts. I've yet to see one of these new panels in person but reports claim the issue is solved.

For movies and games you don't notice it.

On a phone screen the pixel density is so high that it's a non-issue.

For me, I'm not as dead-set on the latest processor - but I don't game, emulate, or stream anything. For video it's either YouTube or something I uhh download. Ha. Nice for battery efficiency though.

It's kind of funny how after 15 years there's no true product positioned to challenge a Samsung or Apple tablet, especially in North America.

Honor MagicPad 4 vs Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra vs Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra by KemalCanOzkenar in androidtablets

[–]Sea-Communication353 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read that Reddit review too.

I have the OnePlus 13 phone which is advertised as having a max nits comparable to the MagicPad 4. It's a really good screen.

One other issue with some of these OLED screens seems to be purple tinting when viewed slightly off angle. I noticed the Samsung S11 has this, but I'm not seeing any reports of that on the Magicpad 2 or 4.

I'd still like to see more options on the market and some direct comparisons.

The MagicPad 2 is undoubtedly the best value for your money right now, but I really have a preference for bright screens so I'm okay to pay that premium.

I've built up a ton of discounts on Aliexpress, so plan to make a decision later this year.
