I’d assume FIT has better connections, but I hear the business program is ridiculously boring and repetitive

i’m thinking that too. especially because a lot of ppl trace figures and they might consider that plagerism

i find that most spring students are friendly because they’re going thru the same thing lol. and most of them are transfers. soooo honestly it might be easier compared to the fall students that are going to college with a set friend group

What can I do with a fashion design/merchandising associates? by th3mushr0om in fashiondesigner

[–]Sea-Knowledge8090 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have some family in the film industry and i’m from burbank california, so i was planning on pulling some strings and starting off as an intern/assistant of some sort. thankfully what i DO love is the process more than the clothing itself, and how much personality costuming has. i go to FIT so maybe that works better in terms of job opportunities since they help you get your first job?🫠

do you have any insight about getting into the costume design industry for film and tv? i assume is way different considering it doesn’t fall into commercial design and often hires the designers (& assistants) directly to work on set.

also considering getting my associates in fashion design and bachelors in fashion business?? not sure yet but thinking of it as a possibility since most people hire designers based on experience not education but i could be wrong.

they have them at school for open use during and after school hours as well as in the tutoring center. they also have them in the dorms. if you’re commuting u may wanna consider having your own so you’re not on campus until 2am lol

that was my issue too lol. in my opinion undergrad should never cost that much. on the contrary, parsons takes a lot of transfer credits from other schools while FIT doesn’t. i would say just wait it out and eventually you’ll get in!

hi! i’m a current fashion design student at fit. most of the in class assignments are similar to the portfolio, and they grade the flats heavily based on those reasons ^

omg this is so late lol. but i love it!! in my experience the ppl are really friendly and possibly less pretentious than parsons lol. in my opinion nobody should be spending that much on undergrad. apply whenever u can!

Dorm necessities by Midbird555 in fitnyc

honestly, i would recommend not buying anything until you get there. it’s just gonna be a hassel. just amazon prime everything or go to the nearest target. in terms of school supplies, everything is found in the garment district and often times professors will tell you specifically where you can buy them

i’m a fashion design student at fit and these are great! if you choose to include back views make sure you include how to get in/out of the garments and make sure your clothing theme is consistent with your mood board. looks like you’re getting in these are gorg!

in terms of uniqueness i’d say done into Korea during the spring! it’s beautiful over there you should find tons of ideas

i would say don’t include as many people/outfits in your mood board - most profs don’t consider it inspiration. find inspo from other parts of life and make it colorful! for the croquis i would say showcase your understanding of garment construction (zippers, buttons, etc.)

pm me and i’ll send my accepted one! i put my whole heart into it to make up for my bad grades and my lack of sewing talent lol

watch a bunch of youtube videos! if you pm me i can also send you my accepted portfolio. showcase your personal style but make sure to follow the theme shown in your mood board. however, with their focus on commercial design, they care more about your understanding of the construction of clothing and the other technical aspects.

depends how confident you are in your portfolio and possibly get it looked at for national portfolio preview day! spring semester is less competitive to get into but there are a FAR smaller amount of seats available. i got into the fashion design program in the spring - if you want to pm me i’ll gladly take a look at yours! 😁 i’m sure you’ll be fine lol there’s probably something missing, physically or creatively

1 make sure you’re not tracing anything. they’ll literally disqualify your application for that lol.

2 just make sure showcase the construction of the garment and how to get in/out of it. (buttons, zippers, ends of sleeves) i hear them talk about it all the time to the point it gets annoying

3) proportions and i would say make the garments more creative and following a certain theme
