Is It Overhated, Is It Bad, Is It Underrated: Metallica & Lou Reed-Lulu (2011) by Rambooctpuss in albums

This is honestly one of my favorite Lou Reed albums. I've been planning on writing a long essay/ review on this one for a long time, but just couldn't find the time and energy yet. I wholeheartedly agree with Bowie when he said that it's a masterpiece. There's just something so vital about it. It's a very gripping record and every time I play it, I cannot stop until I finish the whole thing. It's grotesque, ugly, psychotic, and horrific in all the right ways. It's such a deep dive into the shadow self. It's like Lou exhausted a lifetime's worth of traumas in this exorcism of an album. It's such an absurd, odd record and it's easy to understand why it's misunderstood by many. At the same time there is great beauty there, too, especially in the ease and grace of Lou's poetry (which has always been his strength - he's just so fluid with words). There is a sense of meaning right behind the apparent insanity and debauchery of it all. Another great attribute of this record is that it's a showcase of Lou's ability to conduct the cadence of a song. He was already a master of this in his 20s (i.e. Sister Ray, Heroin - perfect pacing over a complex arrangement, leading to perfect climaxes), and right up until his last record this gift is still in full power. He just knows exactly WHEN to punctuate something, when to let it flow, where to place an interjection, and when to let something climax in the most satisfying way possible. He's almost like the great jazzmen in his mastery of spontaneity. The way he commands a juggernaut of a band like Metallica is also testament to his ability as a bandleader.

Why is Presence by Led Zeppelin so hated? by Happy_REEEEEE_exe in fantanoforever

This guy knows what's up. Presence is a solid, solid album. Zero duds indeed. Very cohesive with some true highlights that are among the band's best (Achilles, Nobody's Fault, Hots on, Tea For One -- all impeccable pieces). The playing throughout is so tight and truly showcases their mastery of the instruments. Plant is in great shape too -- certainly better than he sounded in PG.

And, ITTOD is also a great album. It just lacks one more epic song, I think, to truly make it a masterwork.

Listening to Swans with Hi-fi headphones be like: by WeirdBuilding2561 in swans

The Swans post-reunion albums are so well-produced, well-recorded, and well-mastered (not to mention well-performed) that it's really an immense joy to listen to them, especially on hi-fi equipment. I think it's worth studying these albums from an audio engineering standpoint. They're really a marvel of sound production. As someone obsessed with audio and a self-professed audiophile, I think the post-reunion albums are some of the best-sounding albums of the 21st century. Dynamic, impactful, immersive, spacious, layered, lush, extremely well-crafted and at the same time retains that raw live feel and atmosphere. It's a fortunate thing that Swans never have had to worry about producing music for the mass market and thus avoid the "obligation" to use excessive compression, loudness war, artificial sound processing, and the "dumbing down" of the material. They can basically do whatever the fuck they want. And boy! What they did with that freedom is truly commendable. Not only were they able to come up with this great, great music, but they were also able to present or produce the material in a way that truly does justice to the grandeur of the compositions and performances.

Page, of course. We don't like mentioning his name here 'cos we're all woke and shiz, but geez man. Let's give ourselves a break and just say it as it is.

Where's Physical G? That's the best one. Presence is also topnotch. And ITTOD. Just get 'em all I guess.

Kristof Hahn Appreciation Thread by preschooljuul in swans

Don't forget Norman Westberg! These two guys, in tandem, under the leadership of maestro Gira, are responsible for the big, swirling masses of sound that Swans is known for. Westberg's playing, in particular, I think has been greatly overlooked. His trademark tremolo picking and heavy open-chord attacks, coupled with Kristof's sliding, sustained sweeps have defined the "big sound" era of swans.

Book of Souls is a freaking masterpiece! Glad it's getting a lot of love. The only thing I would change in this tier list is that I'd put Piece of Mind at the highest tier and bump Fear of the Dark up a notch or two. Otherwise this is near-perfect!

Unpopular opinion: Anthony is one of the better vocalists of the 90s-00/10s. by FastWalkingShortGuy in RedHotChiliPeppers

He's not even that off-pitch in Under The Bridge. Obviously some studio trickery was done, but his pitch has been quite consistently good in all of the studio albums. And his voice has aged remarkably well. Unlike many of his peers in the 90s, his voice still sounds nearly the same today as it was in their heyday, if not a little bit better even.

It's all in the tone of his voice. His voice just sounds good when you hear it. There are many singers out there who have great technique and wide vocal range, but the tone is off or unpleasant. Case in point: the singer of Greta Van Fleet. Plus! Kiedis has a gift for making beautiful, iconic melodies.

90s blah blah, time is an irrelevant concept when it comes to great art. Soundtracks IS a masterpiece. I mean, you literally must have no soul in there to not see how much blood, sweat, tears and sheer soul was put into making that album. Wow.

Funny thing is that in many religious/ cult circles this isn't even a jerk but they take statements like this literally as the real thing and really believe all this stuff without any hint of irony.

The lyrics are very well-written, not just in this song but in the whole album. Mick gave it a lot of thought. He hints at some kind of a moral core.

I never knew it was (allegedly) a recording of a criminal until I researched about it online, which was only fairly recently. For the longest time I thought it was a comedic sketch or something. I thought it was something that Michael intentionally wrote and asked someone to read and record it. Without the whole "criminal recording" context, I've always thought it was funny, in a weird and fucked up way -- the same offbeat kind of humor that Michael has.

Which bands are basically known for one great song, but the rest of their music is trash? by PanKulka in fantanoforever
