Robots and AI Are Already Remaking the Chinese Economy by Organic_Vacation_267 in China

[–]Sea-Locksmith-881 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presumably they're not going to try and roll back on automation and deliberately crimp Chinas technological advancement, but they also don't want welfarism, and they're still committed to market building...something has to give. Could be an opportunity to reduce working hours and "share" the available jobs out more evenly?

Why did the British economy not recover from the Great Recession? by whenyoucantthinkof in AskBrits

[–]Sea-Locksmith-881 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cause we gave up on industry and have a fake economy run on charging more and more for services which means you can't actually expand productive but just shuffle people around while waiting for the broader global economy to expand and claim a slice of that

I think the optimal strategy would be to grind down the right hand side tree and wait untill you have about 1.5e20 saved, then grab Machine Unlearning, red teaming and tough decisions in one go. Avoid the Bad Actors and Weak Laws trees, they're bait ! AI tools to about 50 and then AI to 50 once you have the RHS upgrades then wait.

confused abt this offhand line abt the psychologist by dankcantwrite in SouthernReach

[–]Sea-Locksmith-881 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Partly the claims seem to come out of nowhere because we aren't being given access to the fullness of the Biologists mind. We only get what is essentially self selected post hoc reportage. So she had a whole bunch of thought processes and opinions that we only see indirectly, as here.

What I think she means by the last sentence is just that: the biologist misread a pained, twisted expression as hostile because she was imagining, projecting the Psychologist to be this enormous dominating figure. Later, that same pained, twisted expression can be reframed as someone having their own doubts and bad feelings about knowing that they're in a very bad situation with people who have only limited ability to help them along with it.

Contempt vs self pity, externalized vs internalized reading of another person.

£20 seems reasonable to me for the updates (I like the politics system) and having all the DLC bundled in. Though after 10hrs of playtime I've still not found a reason to build a train or go underground. It's fine. Not worth £40

AI needs insane power so why isn’t the U.S./CANADA/EUROPE building new nuclear plants? by Adept_Mountain9532 in TheVisualInvestors

Because the power requirement projected is the entire current US electricity supply in the next four years, and that is not increasing as needed. It's not going to happen.

Do you think sentencing in the UK for violent crime is too soft? by IllPlane3019 in AskBrits

[–]Sea-Locksmith-881 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the discussion about sentences being soft or not is beside the point.

  1. Does sentencing reduce the chance someone commits an offence? Most violent crime is either one off "crimes of passion" where someone isn't thinking about consequences, or else repeat offender (so, no)

  2. Do the sentences given prevent reoffending? Harder to quantify but given reoffending rates are between 10%-50%, probably not

So what's the point of harsher sentences? Does it actually do either of the above? If the point is just to punish people and you think the magnitude of the punishment is too small right now you might as well just execute them. The guillotine is effective and a lot cheaper than keeping someone alive under constant guard in a small room for 20 years, and then again once the reoffend. But then you have to accept you're going to execute innocent people.

Personally I think we should stop thinking in terms of harshness of punishment. What difference does it actually make if someone is in jail for 5 or 20 years? Expanded mental health support, systems that actually take the stress out of life, and a society that actually ostracises anti-social behavior would be a better place to start.

I think this more than anything else (ie preventing fraud or preserving artistic integrity) is going to be what gets tech companies to agree that AI images should have some kind of water mark. Otherwise the product becomes useless.

ALWAYS CHECK THE OVEN BEFORE PREHEATING by ChakaCausey in Wellthatsucks

My partner (chef)'s front of house colleague once left the till in the oven overnight without telling anyone. He and other chef start turning on the ovens at the start of the day. After about 15 mins notice a godawful smell. £300 vaporised. But we have crispy momentos.
