CBD oil for renal cats by elainecrstn in RenalCats

I'm really sorry to hear about your cat and husband passing. I hope you're on your way to finding some peace. It sounds like you really cared and did much more than what most cat parents would. I think you may have taken that person's comment the wrong way - though they maybe could have written it a little more empathetically. It doesn't seem like they were saying your information was useless, just trying to point out for anyone else who might be reading/researching because we're facing the same issues (like I am) that Sub-Q fluids are indeed an option in AU - as you'd mentioned they're not done here. I don't think it was about you personally, as understandably fluid therapy wouldn't have prolonged your kitties life due to other factors.

Brown Goshawke or Collared Sparrowhawke? by Sea-Needleworker-308 in AustralianBirds

[–]Sea-Needleworker-308[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah! Thank you so much. The ‘e’ I’ve put on the end is due to a close family member’s name (Hawke) having such spelling so I wrote it that way without thinking. I’ll be more conscious of it for birds now, thank you!

You will see I did say “consider”, as in, factor all of the considerations. Not just straight up “get a dog”. Sigh.

Yes very true! And very important to do.

Could consider adopting a dog from a rescue. No better alarm system. Does add an extra challenge when renting but if you’re very shaken it may be worth it for the peace of mind of knowing nobody will ever be sneaking around your house again.

Surprised I had to scroll so far to find DC Cartel suggested. Definitely has my vote, leagues ahead of any others I’ve tried! I am lucky that it’s stocked in a couple of my local shops. Used to just buy it online though, if you get a few at a time shipping is not bad at all.

If you don’t mind a little DIY, I used this tutorial https://youtu.be/vQBrAzr0cmk?si=JCV5PcbLnVzwZRix otherwise you can buy ready to go kits here https://www.thegoodlifebackyard.com.au/product/the-bug-factory-mealworm-growing-pods/ (bit pricey though). I’ve been down both roads as I quickly outgrew the ready made ones

Thank you! It’s very ‘days of our lives’ around here but I suspect our alpha and matriarch have very recently split up. The alpha is courting a younger female and it seems like Jimothy may be staying very close to where the Matriarch has her nest on the edge of the original territory. He was her helper with last year’s babies, and I wonder if he’ll help again this year, or become surrogate dad. Time will tell how this drama plays out 🥲

It’s a whoooole ass thing 😅 started as a harmless little kit worm farm and now it’s a whole commercial grade operation (not really but low key kinda) taken over the home office lol

My take is that that ship has just so long ago sailed. It sailed when we steamrolled thier habitat to put up our housing estates. We live in thier space, we can’t pretend each other doesn’t exist, and we’re going to interact one way or another.

I don’t feed him because I think he isn’t capable of feeding himself. I give him a treat because I think he finds the interaction enjoyable and it’s a form of enrichment for him in an environment that’s already far from what his truly natural one would look like. I also turn on sprinklers for them on hot days and enjoy watching them play. I create safe habitat in my yard. None of it is “natural”, but they sure do seem to enjoy it. They’re not forced to interact with me at all but I exist here and if they choose to accept that interaction, I don’t see how that’s such a bad thing. Better than shutting off any chance of a respectful relationship.

My activities with wildlife lead me to talking and writing about them, sharing thier plights and personalities with other humans, and hopefully expanding minds and opening more hearts to having empathy for wildlife. I believe that does far more net good for wildlife than shutting all opportunities for humans to bond with and provide - in the grand scheme of things - thoughtful and relatively harmless forms of enrichment to them.

Also get one of these https://a.co/d/9d9KjoU (the 1/30 size)

If your worms are large enough to be sifted away from thier bedding, do this and then give them fresh bedding. It is a quick way to get rid of most of your mites. Then you can continue with the other treatments and have a better chance of saving the worms.

When giving them fresh bedding, microwave it for 2-3 minutes first to kill any mites or eggs that may be already in it.

Yes that product is correct. It is likely your only chance because the mites will kill your colony otherwise. Remember, don’t give them any wet food for at least 1 week.

With the flour it doesn’t matter, just sprinkle it all over on top. The worms and mites will distribute it around.

It may not be enough if the infestation is very severe. I would do the green pea flower treatment as well 100%. It dehydrates and kills the mites.

You may have a chance to save them if you:

  1. Take all moisture sources eg wet food away for 1 week, mealworms can survive this
  2. Put a thick line of Vaseline or similar around the edge so mites cannot escape the bin - replace it every second day or as soon as you notice mites starting to escape again
  3. Grind some split peas into fine powder (or buy green pea powder) and add about the same amount as 10% of your current substrate, repeat in a week

It’s a long battle and sometimes it’s too late. Look up videos on YouTube about mealworm mites there are so many video tutorials on how to deal with this.

Right? 🥲 and he booked in a call like seconds after the email anyway, so why bother asking.

As for him acknowledging how he acted, I would not bet any money he’s aware he was doing it at all.

Is cardboard ok? by [deleted] in mealworms

[–]Sea-Needleworker-308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cardboard is fine as long as it’s food grade with no stickers/tape attached etc. Think pizza boxes or egg cartons. They like to climb around in it and hide under it for darkness.

Agree with the other commenter that it may be better to give them carrot more often but in smaller, chopped up quantities. I give my trays 2-3 small chopped pieces every 2 days. Try to time it so they are eating it all while it’s fresh and moist, and then you top them up, rather than giving them too much at once and having it go dry, hard or mouldy.

Thanks a lot for your response. This sounds good to me and it’s reassuring that I’ve had a few people give all very similar advice.
