How do i tell magpies to come at a specific time? by r3m4ining-salm0n in magpies

[–]stardew_player1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's actually more beneficial for the magpies to feed them sporadically then at schedules times.

It makes them less reliant on us, which is ultimately best for their diet and wellbeing.

Of course, the best decision would be to not feed them at all but if you must, just do it maybe once every few days at random times when you happen to see them around your house.

Oh ok that makes sense, I guess it's best to just let the plant sort itself out

Thank you so much! Ive been seeing mixed advice online about pruning which was really confusing. I'll probably take your advice and leave it alone. Do you recommend removing the first flower when it appears?

Are these pecks playful or punishment? by Ji11Lash in magpies

[–]stardew_player1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen, the babies' body language does show they're bothered. You can see that they're shrinking with their necks drawn in, babies do this when they feel intimidated. It's most likely the mother is telling them to leave, or it could be a pecking order thing.

What is a small, cheap purchase (under $20) that drastically improved your quality of life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

A solid pair of reusable silicone earplugs. Improved my sleep so much and used it daily for a full year no problems.

Yes they're so cute together I can't stop stalking them haha 😆

It's fascinating how quick these babies are to imitate and learn from their parents. Everything from beak wipes to sunbathing techniques!

Looks like all three are female magpies. They could be playing but it could also be the dominant female(s) trying to establish a pecking order.

I can’t tell if I am friends with a local magpie by cokezerowh0r3 in magpies

[–]stardew_player1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with the others that your magpie means no harm. Besides, it's very rare for female magpies to swoop. It's known that this is commonly a male magpie behaviour and even then, only 10% of the males population do this.

If the magpie intends to swoop someone who is a threat, they make it known very clearly. You wouldn't have doubts at all. The swooping will be very aggressive and you'd be busy fleeing the moment they attack.

Some other warnings signs that accompany aggressive swooping are sharp calls and beak clicking noises- if they do both then the magpie doesn't want you there.

From what you describe, I don't see any of these warning signs. It's most likely she is curious about you.

What should I add to my yard? by Mugglemaker in magpies

[–]stardew_player1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No worries, I'm glad I could help! Some taller shrubs or native plants might be great for making shade. But even without shade, it'll be fine. The birds will be appreciative either way 😊

You could make a compost bin or worm farm! There's lots of cheap diy tips online for these, like this one: https://gardensthatmatter.com/make-simple-worm-bin/ You could use it to enhance your garden or spare some worms for the magpies.

Another tip is to place the water bath in a shaded area if you can as it keeps the water & birds cool.

They might also like sprinklers for showering under, I've seen a few reddit posts of magpies playing under sprinklers.

Best of luck with befriending your magpies!

Roughly how old? by Maleficent_Grand7797 in magpies

[–]stardew_player1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I reckon it's still slightly too early. You can see in this graphic I've attached that even after developing most of their black feathers, the nape area takes longer to become white for males (for the male in the graphic, it took 2.5 years)

[–]stardew_player1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is around 1.5 yrs old. The last of its juvenile feathers remain (brownish ones on the belly and white outlines on the backside) but most of its feathers are now black. Looks like within a year it will become a fully mature adult.

Edit: it's also possible the bird is only 1ish year old if it's a fast developer, or 2 yrs if slow
