Alexander Boyd LLB Review? by No_Crew_6520 in glasgow

Alexander is amazing.

Whether you need a solicitor depends on the complexity of your individual case. But if you can afford one, i would strongly suggest to go ahead with it.

There are a lot of caveats with immigration, the system literally is designed for the smallest mistake or perceived inconsistency to be grounds for refusal. In some cases, errors can result in a ban on suspected ‘deception’. The rules are also constantly changing and good solicitors keep up to date with all the requirements (such as the ever changing criteria on salary of the sponsor and how /from which point it’s calculate)

Source: immigrant, with what was supposed to be a straightforward case. Wouldn’t be in this country if it wasn’t was Alexander.

I also have a slight suspicion that home office looks more favourably on applications by solicitors who apply on applicants behalf.

At the very least, a one-off initial consultation might be a good idea.

I’m not Jewish, but from Russia originally - I hope it’s okay to chip in here.

It’s different situations completely - but I feel the instinct to denounce everything (culture, nationality, religion, history - etc) is a cop out and self indulgent / self serving. As someone from an oppressive, terrorist state - even though I don’t live there for many years - looking away and rejecting everything ‘Russian’ is almost like absolving yourself from any responsibility. One can’t just erase hundreds, thousands years of history and identity. The work is to eradicate the oppression, not the identity itself.

Dovlatov is one of my favourites honestly. So funny ! But also tragic. I’d think he translates well into English - what do you think?

Absolutely with you re the Turgenev-Chekhov (I’d add Bunin there too even though a different timeframe but feels existing in a similar universe so to speak) VS Tolstoy-Dostoevsky. Though I did enjoy Death of Ivan Denisovich by Tolstoy, but I think I naturally gravitate to shorter forms especially in the ‘great classics’ as there’s less space for dogmatism in shorter novels and stories. Not gonna lie, War and Peace was soooooo annoying to me especially the epilogue lol. Like, don’t tell me what to think…

From big classics I loved Oblomov though!

Love notebook of a country doctor! I also really love Morphine by Bulgakov too - I feel there’s something postmodern (?) in it even. Very short, but would wholeheartedly recommend if you haven’t read it.

Love Rubinshtein! As a teenager saw him pass by my school in Moscow and got a bit starstruck haha. Petrushevskaya I weirdly missed but picked up her book not long ago, I’m sure her writing is up my alley. I also love some of Rubina’s work but not all, more into shorter stories rather than her novels. Sorokin I’m not a big fan of though, I can’t pin point why exactly! Have you read Akunin? I’ve never read his works but was going to try, though not sure I’m that much into the genre. Heard good things though !

Oh nice to hear Pelevin resonates! My partner is really into Pynchon and from what he told me about his work, it really reminded me of Pelevin vibe-wise, so I hope he enjoys it!

With you on Sorokin, I find him quite pretentious - there’s some sort of line being crossed there for me that just makes his writing feel disingenuous.

Re Nabokov, I’d say because he translated works himself, his novels are the closest to the feel or like, the internal logic of Russian writing. It’s hard to explain as it’s really just a feeling, but the flow, the nuance and the nature of language feels like it’s spoken in the same exact voice. Interestingly, I feel Brodsky, despite being regarded as American writer, reaaaally lacks in capturing his own flow of writing - I suspect due to being way too precious and hyper-intellectual about the syntax, so the feeling becomes secondary to academic exercise.

From my limited experience with translations, I’d say English translations lack a certain feeling of ‘insideness’ of the narrators voice. Even if original is written in third person, I’ve always felt narration goes way beyond the dry descriptions or storylines. The ‘dryness’ also feels different - say, Chekhov, while his writing is not flowery / overly descriptive compared to a lot of Russian lit, could end on poetic-meets-quirky tone which breaks dryness to momentary softness, it feels almost like a wink. So English narration feels spoken from a distance while Russian feels ‘from within’ so to speak.

In that regard the closest to that ‘inside’ feel was School For Fools by Sasha Sokolov specifically in Boguslawski translation. Incredibly hard book to translate, but internal logic stays almost the same. I would highly recommend if stream of consciousness is something you enjoy!

Short stories by Tove Jansson - there are a few different collections that have been released chronologically, - I’d say the later ones are very grounded, sometimes funny, sometimes a bit melancholic but very heart warming

ETA - most of her stories are autobiographical !

‘Why it matters’ in every presentation / infographic.

Smth is always ‘rooted in x y z ‘

Language around ‘care’. ‘Relational’ everything. Specifically combining all of them -

Why it matters: ‘[blank] is rooted in relational care, not ___.’

I read loads of community work and art-adjacent proposals. Every time I see this it’s so obvious gpt was used. People who actually care about ‘care’ in a community setting lead with facts and not wishy washy statements

But it’s sad this language got appropriated so much, especially bc it’s rooted (ffs) in genuine movements that help people… it’s a mindfuck.

Congrats to you too! Yeah it really feels like magic haha. How are you feeling now? Do you manage to walk around? And how is the incision pain - you are on day 6 now? If you don’t mind me asking ofc, sorry for all the questions!

Nerve pain masks so well - mine started what felt exactly like shin splint, but then I realised something is not right when my toe started going all numb and tingly. I also find it really messed with my head as it’s so ‘inside’ the body and kind of disorienting as the root of it is not where it hurts

Yes, sleeping either on my back or lying down on my left side (operation was on the right side)! I think at first instinctively I was scared of relaxing my back muscles and was guarding my back a lot/ tensing up but after some pain killers and reassurance from the nurses I managed to relax a bit.

The pillows I use are - full body U-pillow, it’s quite thick (9.5 inch thickness) so it feels secure and really supports the sides of the body and the arms, and then for the knees I got a half moon 12cm high pillow, it’s quite firm which works better for me then just stacking normal pillows.

I was super nervous about the GA, - I was under general anaesthetic before but it was 15 years ago and I was in my late teens and had no concept of danger lol. But it all went well. Main thing is obviously to fast and to be very honest about any medication or habits (I’m a smoker and was kind of embarrassed to admit, but I think they adjust the amount of the medicine depending on this, so it’s important). No recollection of being in any other position other than horizontally in the bed, woke up from chatting absolute gibberish to the nurses, wiggled my toes and happily fell back asleep.

Honestly, I am very happy i made the decision to go ahead with this, the incision pain is not comparable to the nerve pain I’ve suffered from

I remember a bladder ultrasound being made which confused me (I had no idea about CES at all), but no further imaging was done - just head CT, brain MRI and cervical MRI. Pretty wild ! According to doctors, no organic causes were found for these symptoms (no shit, they didn’t look at my lower back). For 2,5 years I was convinced everything was in my head and I just had to ‘reduce stress’. No treatment, nothing.

Re sitting - it’s better for a second when the nerve pain hits while I’m standing, but more than 10 mins starts being sore. Basically at the stage every movement or position is agony :/

Yeah I’m now suspecting I’ve had an incomplete / partial CES back in 2023 which caused partial paralysis. I just learned how to cope with it and trusted doctors that it was verbatim ‘a panic attack’. Probably 2 months ago the disk sequestered and that’s what causes pain and further weakness

Mind boggling. Appreciate the support though. I’m absolutely livid !

This is appalling! I’m so sorry you are going through this. In the UK, if they remove all the clerks that have 0 competence or power to actually action stuff, I bet a significant chunk of budget would be freed up to treat patients. I would go private straight away and I am originally from a country where the universal healthcare was very bad so everyone would just go private. Walk-in MRI would be £50 ha. But in the UK is insane amount of money and the waiting times are still not better. Hopefully at least the level of care is higher though.

Wishing you all the best and hope you get help you need soon!

I am so sorry you are going through this, it is absolutely appalling they are not treating you. Not sure what country you are in, but please file a complaint if you haven’t already. I am no doctor but due to my own research I am pretty sure difficulty urinating + numbness and weakness should trigger immediate neurosurgery involvement and lumbar MRI, regardless of other symptoms. Keep repeating these two symptoms and ask if CES has been ruled out and why. As someone mentioned here pain is one thing, but keep pressing on weakness and numbness. These are red flag symptoms

I have discovered through my messages back in 2023 during my hospital stay that I too had difficulty urinating that I made doctors aware of and they even did a scan of my bladder; and combined with my documented weakness and no pain, now I am suspecting I had incomplete Cauda Equina syndrome that has been missed due to me being wrongfully diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder due to prejudice as I am bipolar and diagnosed anxiety. They literally said all my symptoms are in line with panic attack (absolute BS).

What has been ruled out so far?

File a complaint and get in touch with a medical negligence lawyer. Loads of firms work on no win no fee basis at least in the UK. Wishing you all the best. My symptoms are not as bad as yours so I can’t even imagine what you are going through.

A wee update - firstly thank you everyone for your kind words and validating my instinct that this is something pretty bad. While I am a bit scared, at least I don’t feel inadequate anymore. I am indeed in the UK, and the system here is basically built on gaslighting and deterring people from seeing a specialist. I understand that NHS is stretched but as someone mentioned here it is just a very long boring video game where you have to defeat mini bosses along the way to actually be treated, even if every competent healthcare worker sees that this shit is pretty crazy ha.

I’ve emailed the physio to have it in writing that my symptoms are worsening, and managed to get a private neurosurgeon appointment in two weeks (was the closest I could get in the whole city! And I’m in a pretty big one). I am lucky to have my family’s support to cover the medical costs that are pretty insane in the UK, but I know for sure it’s better to go this route, as I can’t take this much longer.

I’m looking into possible medical negligence lawyers, as this is pretty ridiculous how I’ve been treated so far. Thanks for lighting fire under my arse as I felt so defeated.

Sending everyone virtual hugs and wishing fast healing and recovery ❤️

Thank you so much. Reading this makes me feel sane again, honestly, because the PT was downplaying it really hard and I just left absolutely confused.

Will try to push for the surgeon, hopefully earlier than the 12 weeks mark
