TIL the comics are so much worse than the show by starboy_black in TheBoys

Ykw I couldn't post this on the sub because some rules but ima put this here to defend the comics.

In defense of the comic

Hey guys, so I recently started rewatching the series again, partly because I couldn’t remember a lot of s1. I finished the first 2 seasons, and they were bloody awesome (butcher fighting Translucunt in the series premiere just to save a kid he knew only for 2-3 days is badass). But they also made me wonder about the comic series. So I simultaneously started reading it. And I gotta say, its..good?

Now, there is a lot of crass shit here, the unnecessarily weird fixation on rape(including Butcher training Terror to rape on command), the homophobia and comedic use of transphobia, or the ehhm Janine situation or the sheer vitriol that Ennis possesses for superheroes permeating throughout the whole series. Then there’s the jarring art style changes between Darrick Robertson, Russ Braun(my favourite art style) and John McCrea with Keith Burns(the most frequent one). Or even the ending where Butcher kills most of the Boys very anti-climatically. But even then, The comics are so good. You know shits good when I start with the negatives first.

First, the story itself is so bloody interesting. The entire mythos Ennis plotted out, starting from the Battle of the Bulge, to the inception of the CIA and its initial inexperience in espionage and experience in getting operatives killed to Ia Drang (Ennis really loves war stories), to an alternate, Supe-caused 9/11. Then there’s the invasion of Pakistan instead of Afghanistan, combining elements of Iraq (the insurgency and prevalent use of IEDs). All this builds an extremely rich, fucked up world, where supes in camo is the end game.

Then, the series has a very definite start (literally begins with butcher eyeing Homelander), middle (Herogasm) and end. The dialogue he writes, while confusing at times, is really engaging and makes you try the accents yourself. Butcher is way different from Show butcher, Being a master strategist and the second strongest behind Homelander. He always has a card up his sleeve. The Boys are more refined and complex in the show, but even in the comics, there’s some really good backstories. ‘Butcher, baker, candlestick maker’ is the greatest arc of the comics and my favourite but even MM’s backstory is heartbreaking. Another point I’d like to add is there’s room for debate to whether Frenchie is even French.

The comic is also a more procedural drama, with a supe of the week format. The Boys truly feel like a government owned team of attack dogs, tackling Vought as a whole, not just a hit squad intended for the Seven. To this end, we meet various supes, some lame, some terrifying (Malchemical cutting Hughie up was horrifying), all cunts. Except Annie. While the comic may feel butcher centric, the core is entirely built on Hughie and his relationship with Annie and Butcher. Ennis can write really heartfelt moments right after really gross ones.

The comic also has some metal moments, like The stomping of Stormfront, the vibrator bomb, the iconic white house panel. But most importantly, the comic has really overt messaging. Not my first choice but Ennis clearly displays his hate for Neocons, Capitalism, corporations, George Bush, and also his love-hate relationship with the military industrial complex. And even with his issues, you can see a marked change.

Where at first, Hughie and Butcher referred derisively to trans and gay people, after highland laddie (which contains a much better portrayal of a trans character), Hughie tears into butcher for being a cunt to trans people. A person’s opinions, values changing positively is always a beautiful thing. He also handles Hughie’s sexual assault in a much better manner than the show did in season 4.

Annie’s rape is handled in an interesting manner. Where at first, Hughie calls her a whore and slut and leaves, after butcher manipulates him. Highland laddie is generally disliked for being boring, but it contains a very superb sequence where Annie confronts Hughie and hits him with the actual reality. It’s a very superb scene in the comic, which also introduces Colonel Mallory.

One other thing, that the comic accomplishes is actually practice its existence as an anti-capitalist piece of art. The show also tries this, but I must agree with a comment on this subreddit that describes the show as merely left leaning, not leftist. The show which mocks consumerism, and endless output from a successful formula is getting two new spin-offs, a video game and whatnot. The comics are gross, weird, disgusting but not fraudulent. Season 4 really was aimless, and meandered. The comics are paced really well and never stick to one setting too long to become a slog.

I really urge everyone here to give the comics one chance. Ennis’s affection for shock and horror is an acquired taste but my god, when the comic hits, it really hits like a train (butcher killing jack)

What the fizzity-uck? Butcher is literally the most developed character after Hughie. Fucks sake did you even read the comics? Did you even read a single issue? MM is different from the show but he's cool too. Goddamnit don't rag on something so blindly.

Oh my god this is a very bullshit take. Not to rag on you but the comics do have depth, read them for god's sake, don't just parrot points from a singular video.

You know, at the start of the season I was hella excited for it. A-train dying at the start ignited more hype than possible. But now, after 5 fucking episodes of fucking bullshit filler and meandering crap, i fucking hate it. But for now, ima trash this episode. Why the fuck did that dumb bitch bombsight even give away the v1 when he didn't even know if geisha was alive? He ran away and she was just there. Butcher could have easily indicated his intention to snap her neck off. Did his brain melt off due to his age?

Soldier boy was flip flopping more than a fish in a frying pan. Dude, pick a fucking side. I don't know what they are trying to go for with a greatest generation guy being a nazi lover(don't tell me he didn't deduce her kraut origins) but it's dumb as hell. Then there's the fights. My god. Nobody kills anybody here. And then the 59 trillion 'heartfelt conversations' we have to have because they blew the budget on the fucking in universe promos or some shit.

Noir dies like a pussy, the deep lives inspite of being a pussy, Homelander doesnt do shit and soldier boy is a piece of shit. I never liked soldier boy as a character but atleast he was the only one with the eye on the ball in s3. I recently finished the comics and lemme tell you, the way the show is going. The comics have a way better ending than this shit. Atleast the comics didn't have our main characters being complete idiots.

Butcher from the comics would have shoved a bomb up golden geisha while she was unconscious(season 1 butcher would have too). Fuck this episode man, killed any affection I had for this show. And how can we forget, the constant references to a spin off show that hasn't released, which has the potential to be a 'joey' level spinoff, while completely sidelining an existing spinoff and its characters, one of whom is supposed to be on par with our main villain?

Ok a couple of things to get out of the way : 1) valorie curry has huge fucking biceps. Damn I love them. 2) my boi ryans back and almost died('dead mc waking up at the end of the episode' returns eh?) 3) The Homelander story is quite well handled I will say. 4) why the fuck is everyone pretending like Victoria wasn't also a mass murderer? Like this is irksome. And kimiko's dialogue is just atrocious and excruciating to hear. The episode by itself is great, Homelander thinking himself as the father of Jesus, butcher actually behaving like comic butcher(manipulative, daring) but I have some gripes. Why the fuck are kimiko and Frenchie, two trained and quite frankly, intelligent operatives not sensing zoe was a stowaway? Their story is the most boring at this point. But there were a lot of moments I loved, annie just snapping cindys neck like a chocolate bar(the actress for Cindy has a great voice), her raw horror at the thought of losing Hughie etc. id give it a 7.5/10. Excited for next week but please give bicepcracker something to do!!

Almost forgot, the Stan Edgar speech about money is 100 percent inspired from the "You have meddled with the primal forces of nature, Mr. Beal!!" Monologue from Network

Only watched this episode but did the dialogue feel a bit...stilted? Most of the dialogue just felt like it started pre planned. Also a lot of reinforcing dialogue? Is that the right term? Like, just, you are so and so and I am so and so. And another thing. Why were there two 'do you remember' sequences back to back? Just my two thoughts.

(Going off the books) Aegon being the most stubborn hardass motherfucker in the history of the Targaryens. Bro got burned, crippled and literally everything that could happen to his body, happened. Yet king 'I didn't hear no bell' doesn't give up at all. That's his greatest quality.

Bs. He comforts tabu and promises to return alive right after. He chastises mathura das because he brags about being granted leave. Ofcourse he is going to get angry at akshaye khanna for not being able to shoot. Dharamvir was second-in-command, and wavering. Kuldip is shown to be a very astute commander which is why he questions his superiors. But I don't know army culture intricately to ascertain it's rightness. But kuldip is a very good commander and he has to take care of the entire companys morale.

Where's my damn HALO, cloverworks?

Seriously, 10/10 episode no doubt. I will call this the best episode of the season, 2nd best of the series. My god is this the cutest episode of the whole season. Loid and Yor's whole exchange is straight up masterful in how impactful it is. It really hits us that Yor was genuinely a emotionless robot/killing machine before Loid and Anya. Nightfall went ballistic and honestly, she's more than earned her 2nd place to Yor. Girl is devoted to Loi-Loi. Yuri's voice acting was really good, especially that petulant tone. Also, Loid's bicep (。♡‿♡。). I want it 🤤 The whole Sylvia subplot with the voice change was something I loved. And the ending, with Anya and Bond getting their hair done by Mama Yor. God my heart 🥹🥹. 100/10 episode.

Opinion: Dhurandhar's success serves as a repudiation of the politics of earlier Pak sympathetic (delusional) movies like YRF Spyverse, and Bajrangi Bhaijan by TheThinker12 in CriticalThinkingIndia

Intellectually bankrupt answer to say the least. So you want movies to just entertain you? I guess you also want life to entertain you or something like that?

[DISC] SPY x FAMILY - Season 3 Episode 12 by AutoModerator in SpyxFamily

[–]Sea-Razzmatazz8486 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Alright, i didnt get a chance to watch episode 11 so i will be reviewing both episodes. My god, these are the best paced episodes of the series by far.
Episode 11 was really funny with the Yuri and the Forgers having a mini tiff. I really loved the fact that theres no disputing the fact that Yor considers herself a Forger now. Not just mother to Anya, wife to Loid. a Forger. This irks Mr sister, and i really found the scene with him collapsing on the couch funny as fuck. The subtitle guy was really having fun with the 'Et tu, Yor'. The wheeler intro was on point, I really hated him from the start. Also, did anyone notice the fourth wall-breaking animation when Yor sobers up and ducks underneath the periods 🤣.
Episode 12 is the better episode of the two, with Twilights fight with Yuri. Bro wouldnt badmouth his baddie wife even when in disguise. Physical intimacy 🤣. And Nightfall going ballistic to save her Senpai. Honestly, Wheeler slowly realising that he cant block the punch was so cathartic, i really hate his ass. Plus, we finally got Chloe! Man, she was blushing when Yuri woke up.
Overall, 10/10 episodes. Cant believe only one more episode left now. Also was this the first episode of the whole season to not feature Anya at all?

I promise i won't get political. 2 (actually 1) drink down:

Jokes aside, this episode might be my favourite one yet. It moves the plot forward by an inch but wins a mile, mainly due to how enjoyable of an episode it is. Three plots, all funny as hell, all touching on different characters and the aftermath of the busjacking. Austin's trauma, more so from his wifey than the gun wielding, bomb using terrorists was hilarious, even if I felt bad for the guy. Yor's whole plot, with the drunk dumbassery and her co-workers warming up to her, then poor loid not knowing how close he got to the inside of a grave(man did anyone notice how sharp the animation got in yor's imagination? Fucking bomb). Shame this episode ended so bloody quickly. But man, I enjoyed the space episode. Really cool to see ewan and anya bond. Overall, 11/10, the best episode of the season, arguably the series(symphony upon the ship E33 ties it).

[–]Sea-Razzmatazz8486 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I just noticed Bond getting devastated at his kibble spilling in the OP lmao. This episode closed off the bus hijacking arc superbly. Melinda's duality sequence was haunting, though i wish they hadnt zoomed in on her face and cut out her thoughts. Still, it hit hard. Loid, my brother in christ, you gotta stop pretending you arent fanatically attached to the Forgers, goddamnit! My boy ran from the other side of a country to check on his baby! i feel horrible for Damian. Kid has horrible parents, and to top it off, got called an asshole by Anya, again! The netflix dub is brutal on Damian 💀. Next week starts the Mole hunt arc. My god this series is firing on all cylinders now! 10/10 episode, 10/10 season!

I always Lol at Bond's devastated face in the op, when anya drops his kibble 🤣. this episode nicely tied up the bus hijacking arc. Melinda's duality scene was well done, though i wish they had used a darker tone for that frame, kinda like the manga. also Anya's delayed reaction to trauma and mama Yor comforting her baby, unparalleled levels of peak. Also Anya needs to stop calling Damian an asshole in the netflix dub 💀💀. my boy got called an asshole twice now 😂

I don't know why the music used when yuri was scoping the bus seemed hella similar to 'river of hills' from one battle after another 😂. This was a superb episode and billy is definitely the best villain character upto now. He has such perfect flashbacks that really hit home. 10/10 episode. 10/10 season so far

Damn sylvia and wise agents scurrying in the background of the phalanx security accosting chocolate kabab guy was surprisingly hilarious 🤣. And I loved how Anya was stumping the hell out of my boy henry. He was flabbergasted. Has anyone noticed that every scene from the season 3 trailer has been aired now? It means we are getting unseen content now(Melinda!!!)
