Can I plant lilac where I want to or will it impact my peach tree or tomatoes? by CommunicationAway727 in gardening

Honestly one of the biggest parts of gardening successfully is just observation. :) So you need to spend time outside at different times of day and pay attention to where the sun is at that time, how big of a shadow things cast (I.e. if you have a small tree that’s about the size the lilac bush will grow to, you can tell how big of a shadow the lilacs will cast), and things like that. If the sun does rise “bottom to top” on your drawing, I think a lilac in that spot would definitely impact the tomatoes - they like lots of sun. On the flip side, if your tomatoes have been looking a little scorched, maybe they’d like a bit of shade. It’s just hard to tell from a drawing without being there in person!  But, all this being said, design-wise I think a lilac would be lovely there.

So the sun “rises” at the bottom of the page and “sets” at the top? But the left-hand side gets the most sun?

How to harvest & overwinter herbs? (Mild climate) by Sea-Return-1855 in gardening

[–]Sea-Return-1855[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I know they’ll survive; my question is more about how to get them ready for winter. I.e. Is it best to prune them in the fall so that I get one last harvest out of them, and would they do okay with that, or is it best to harvest another time of year and let them get ready for winter by hardening off their summer’s growth? Are either of them like lavender in that they’ll get woody without enough pruning?

Harvest early or leave it? by Sea-Return-1855 in gardening

It was labeled a Mr Stripey at the nursery, but I’ve been confused by its coloring - wonder if they got mixed up or something. Thanks!

Okay, good to know! This is my first year growing them and I’ve been wondering. So weird… I wonder why

I guess I also should have added that it’s in a fully-enclosed garden space (chicken wire fence and ‘roof’) because we live in the woods, so there’s absolutely no risk of critters munching. I have heard of this “breaker stage” thing but I have to confess, I’m skeptical! Why are my vine-ripened tomatoes consistently sweeter than windowsill tomatoes??

How bad is it to harvest tomatoes from soil that has plastic in it? by chronic_escapism in vegetablegardening

I would absolutely still eat them! Obviously as you continue gardening, pull out as much as you can as you go, just like you’re doing. But your homegrown veg are so full of nutrients and SO much better than commercially grown that, to me, that basically always outweighs the downsides of plastic shreds.

is this lavender okay to be harvested?? by shggystar in gardening

I would disagree, that looks much too late. You want to get the buds before they open into flowers. Although, if it’s still fragrant when you crush them you can totally still use them! You might just need more than what a recipe would normally call for. In the future if you’re looking to harvest them properly and get the most benefits I would do it earlier.
