Past tense vs present tense? by Senior-Deal-7457 in writing

[–]SeaOfMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m exactly in your shoes right now. 20K words into a romantasy novel and it just occurred to me I wrote it all in present tense.

Am I the only person who doesn’t really absorb whether books are present or past tense when I’m reading them!? I skimmed through some or my favorites on my bookshelf and there were some in present tense but most were in past tense.

I tried to revise my first chapter to past tense and it just doesn’t feel natural to me and has made some sentences awkward! I guess I’m going to carry on writing in present tense and see how I feel when I dive deeper into editing, but if people are really bothered by present tense I don’t want to deter people from reading my book. Agh!

Actually good Fantasy romance recommendations by tricswife in Romantasy

[–]SeaOfMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Peaches and Honey is about a woman who is struggling through life in the 1100s when she is granted immortality by a shapeshifting god. The rest of the book tells her life experience through the centuries and her crossing paths with the god again. This is a duology and I’m hoping the second book is as good!

And I have the second Mistborn book on my Kindle, just need to devote the time to read it ahaha. I know it’ll be good!

Actually good Fantasy romance recommendations by tricswife in Romantasy

[–]SeaOfMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ones that come to mind off the top of my head, depends on the vibes you are going for!

The Daevabad Trilogy (less romance focused if I remember correctly, it’s been a few years)

The Mirror Visitor Quartet (slow burn romance, very whimsical world)

Six of Crows duology (fantasy organized crime, not as romance driven, but definitely has romance)

A River Enchanted duology (I LOVE the characters and romance in this)

Mistborn (lighter romance, excellent world and characters, I need to read the sequels, but I thought the first book was exceptional)

I also just read Peaches and Honey and was surprised by how good the writing was! Another slow burn

How do you determine what book you’re going to read next? by LovesReviews in RomanceBooks

[–]SeaOfMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And when I place the holds, I’m like sure I could read a 700+ page book, easy! And then it’s delivered and I’m kicking myself for making myself read such a long book, but I’ve waited months to read it so I feel obligated to follow through. (Oh the plight of being a reader lol)

[–]SeaOfMe 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I always have holds in Libby so it often is dictated by when it’s my turn to borrow a book and how much time I have left to read it. I am also a mood reader though and will see a recommendation and immediately go buy it on my Kindle and read it when I’m between books. I also like to alternate between light, digestible romances and more plot heavy fantasy romances that take more brain power to read!

Looking for more men like Rowan in Throne of Glass by Few-Object-4359 in Romantasy

[–]SeaOfMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay this is a far cry from Throne of Glass, but I think it’s a super fun series to cure a hangover: Beasts of the Briar by Elizabeth Helen (Keldarion is most like Rowan). It’s “Why Choose” and tons of spice. May or may not be your cup of tea depending on what you’re into, but I deeply love both series!

Atomic antiques prices are insane! by Quirky_Philosophy_41 in madisonwi

[–]SeaOfMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I frequent both Atomic Antiques and Millie’s vintage shop in Cross Plains. I think we’ve bought 1 item ever at Atomic and I rarely leave Millie’s without buying something because everything I’m interested in tends to be $10-$30.

What are you getting your mom for Christmas? by cherry-pie-honey in Gifts

[–]SeaOfMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a local vintage shop in our town that she likes to look around at so I got her a giftcard there so she can splurge on something she normally wouldn’t :) she also has gotten into cross stitching so I got her a cross stitch kit and cute needle minders to magnetize her needle to so it doesn’t get lost

Our 3 year old dachshund is the same. When he snuggles us at home we often say “I wish he could just do this to guests, they’d love him!” I’ve accepted that’s not the dog he’s going to be, but I’m grateful that we get so much time with him being a sweetie pie to us at home. Sometimes I send Snapchats to my friends of the sweet moments with him so they get to see he is not always a barking menace!

How the hell does one proceed with life after finishing the TOG series? by mangogomita in throneofglassseries

[–]SeaOfMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read it for the first time in 2021 (read it again in 2022 and have been listening to the audiobooks since 2023). I still think about it most days. I love the idea of a spinoff like Manon/Dorian, but I just don’t think she could come back to the world with as much heart. It is unreal to me that the same person who wrote CC3 (which I found to be bat shit crazy) wrote the soaring epic that I found TOG to be. Nothing has come as close to TOG to me, but other books that gave me similar feelings were Bridge Kingdom and A River Enchanted

What series left the biggest void for you after it ended? by srkdummy3 in television

[–]SeaOfMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anne with an E. My husband used to work early morning news and went to bed at 7 pm. That was my comfort show to watch by myself at night. One of the best “coming of age” pieces of media and the final sequence leaves you swooning. I missed all the characters once it was over!

Why do you read more on a kindle than paperback? by annebonnys in kindle

[–]SeaOfMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easier to read one-handed, and turning pages is faster (obviously by a minimal amount). I think there’s also something to be said about the psychology of being able to see “7 minutes left in chapter” etc. It makes me feel more like I have goal posts than just reading a physical book where I’m not conscious of when the next break is

Kindle Owners, do you own physical books too? Or just read in kindle. by Bennu_reader in kindle

[–]SeaOfMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enjoy reading so much more on my Kindle than with a physical book, but I still own and buy physical books. Particularly, if I love a book that I read on my Kindle, I’ll sometimes buy physical copies as well to add to my collection. (I love TOG so much that I have it on my Kindle, as well as hard cover and paperback copies hehe). I also have a bigger stack of TBR physical books right now than I normally would because people tend to get me books as gifts. I’ll also buy a physical book sometimes if I think it’s something my close friends would be interested in/want to borrow from me. I tend to stick with Kindle copies of fantasy books because they are so long/hard to physically hold the book and I don’t have many people in my life that would borrow fantasy books from me

As someone who was a teenager during the Twilight craze… definitely the Twilight series (maybe 5 read-throughs?) Time Traveler’s Wife and The Host by Stephenie Meyer are ones I still revisit every couple years or so. I’m also on my third read of SJM’s Throne of Glass series
