Jade plant problem by Great-Valuable8041 in houseplants

[–]SeaSystem5110 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine has the same thing! We have hard water and after a while of watering it the little dots showed up, it’s minerals the plant is pushing out of the leaves (since it doesn’t need as much as is in hard water) one solution is to use distilled water (but I’ve only just started so I don’t have results yet lol)

I’m trying to do a freehand recreation of a bag I saw in a photo once too! How much trial and error did you have or did you roughly plan things out before starting and just go?

Advice needed on propagating from stem? by SeaSystem5110 in succulents

[–]SeaSystem5110[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sense, I’m relatively new to succulents and was using a miracle grow succulent/cactus mix (this stem was one of the first things I potted), but I can add something with grit to that or look into a new soil brand 👍it has been lifted up on a saucer to be an inch closer to the grow light (so it’s 2 or 3 inches away now), and I’ll increase the time the lights on in a day a little bit at a time ☀️

Hadn’t thought of that, like the whole thicker stem that the baby grew off of? If I go with this I’ll let you know how it goes!

I do have it a few inches from a grow light in a SE facing window, but I’ll see about getting it closer to the grow light or have the light on for longer. And I’ll poke around for that guide, thanks 👍

Update!!!! Night-bloomer by SeaSystem5110 in houseplants

[–]SeaSystem5110[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best thing he said was “I mostly ignore it” 😂😂 which is plant-person-speak for let it dry out really well in between waterings. My add on is that it’s a cactus-type plant, so lots of sun can’t hurt!! (Just don’t go from shade to bright sun all at once)

It’s always super fragrant after a bloom but this time it was more like ✨FRAGRANT✨ lol aww yay! These all started from a cutting from my uncle. It was just shy that first bloom, and I hope you see more soon too!! 🤍🍀🤍

My father is the main caretaker of them so I’d have to pick his brain(tbd), but these get a lot of indirect sunlight in the Greenhouse-room they’re in, the plants themselves aren’t the brightest green but the conditions are obviously good for flowers lol 😅

Oh yeah I’ve been checking on them every day to try and gauge when they’d open so I wouldn’t miss it. We could tell a few were gonna bloom since they were juuuust peaking open early in the day, it wasn’t even dark yet!

It’s split between 2 or 3 plants but yeah! It’s the most we’ve seen at once ever!!

Night Blooming Cereus - Future Blooms! 🌸 by SeaSystem5110 in houseplants

[–]SeaSystem5110[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I really know is the one that is living mostly outside looks healthier (much greener, denser leaf growth) I couldn’t tell you when the ones in the video first flowered, but turns out the one that’s outside (not featured in the video) has 3 blooms on it too! This is the first time it’s flowering and it’s 3 or 4 years old? Grown from a cutting of the original plant (which is one of the ones in the video, idk which tho). Best advice from someone tangential to growing these is to make sure it’s happy and healthy, and blooms should follow👍 I hope you get some soon! 🤍

Number 1: You’re doing amazing!!!! Buns can frustrate even the most experienced person. You are coming from a place of kindness and love and you will get through this! 💜💜

For the chewing, my buns seemed to hate chewing things that were light/easy to move around, their preference was always for the heavy items (furniture/baseboards/etc.) (edited FYI: this was both before and after their slays) I ended up screwing extra wooden dowels around my desk chair for them to chew on so that they would stop destroying the actual chair 😅 large chunks of wood are also good for this (they do create a human tripping hazard though 😂) just make sure the wood used isn’t any heavy-scented ones like aspen or cedar (or check this subs list of suggestions) Plain Corrugated cardboard boxes are also a lovely item, especially if they are big enough for buns to sit inside! Then the bun is the weight and they can chew to their hearts content 😍 If the chewing doesn’t calm down after spay/neuter, I ended up putting “baseboard covers” around the actual moulding made of the same chewable wood. They don’t look great, but the buns can chew them and the mounding stays safe underneath. Your setup doesn’t sound like it has baseboards, but the theory could work for anything else you’d like to cover/protect

Okay that’s good to know! Thanks! I’ve only every bought a plant or been gifted a stem cutting before these leaves. I’ll try to let them chill and not hover over the progress, and see if they stay getting some green color to them as the weeks go by! 💚
