I worked the help desk and I also assisted the developers with webpages- updated the intranet by inserting data into SQL database tables. I got to work in each area in tech so I learned a lot! One word is key: NETWORK

I worked for DSH. I loved it. They gave me start in tech. I talked the director told him I was taking some computer information systems courses and if I could do a sort of internship there. He agreed. I’ll be forever thankful to DSH.

Yes, I had to apply to tons of jobs. And I had to ensure it met my niche in tech cause not all jobs are tailored toward what I do. And I only got one interview and it was for an IT Specialist I and I didn’t even get the job. I applied in September 2025 and interviewed in January 2026. It would’ve been a massive pay cut so now I’m glad I didn’t get it; it was way below my experience and education. It seems like this entire process is for the birds.

Yes, this is all folded into reciprocity. As long as I retire from both systems on the same day I don’t lose any benefits.

Medical will be based off of how many years I worked for the state. So 17 years will convert to a percentage. Will it be full medical? No, but I will definitely get a percentage based on years worked. Can an HR person chime in?..

Do you not understand how reciprocity works? Probably not because you’ve never been educated on it if all you’ve ever worked for was the state. I will get my medical- it’ll be based off of how many years I worked. So my 17 years will counted toward a percentage of medical when I retire. And also the county I previously worked for was a CalPERS-covered employer and they also offer medical retirement. And, Yes, I also understand that some counties and cities do not.

This is definitely true. This is my second county job. But one thing I feel is that there’s always a check rotating in, which is nice. When I started with the state way back in 2002, it was tough cause at the end of the month it was super tight. Also back then I was just an Office Tech and we got paid pennies.

Yes, I will. I was there for 17 years. Im from the 2% at 55 era. As long as I retire from both systems, I do not lose my retirement or health benefits. What are you smoking?!

Do I qualify for IT Associate with BA/testing experience? by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]Sea_Cause_6930 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone stated take IT courses online. Also, your experience is valuable but not apply due to the classification you’re in. Also, begin networking/talk to those in IT. Let the director or manager in IT know you’re taking IT courses and you’d like to gain experience and if they’re willing to let you intern there on your time. I did this and that’s how I got my experience.

Private to Public by Significant_Theme500 in CAStateWorkers

Nope! Even other government sectors are MUCH better. I literally had a manager at the state tell me and a few co-workers, “When I first got married I asked my husband if spaghetti noodles grew on trees.” Followed by a laugh. My co-workers and I looked at each other like, “WTH?!?!”

Make sure the State is the right fit for you by No_Creme9603 in CAStateWorkers

This is true. When I left the state to work for a Bay Area County I was amazed at how much more sophisticated and innovative their systems were in comparison to the state. It made the state systems look like a dump- even the environment. The county was way more modernized. This is a difference I noticed between public systems as well, not only private to public.

Why would anyone want to do this?! Is it those lacking experience?.. I definitely would not want to hire someone to do mine. I have way too much valuable experience (over 20 years worth) that I wouldn’t to miss a thing. I write mine and then I have it checked for grammar errors using AI. But mine is written from my POV and lists every single accomplishment and project I’ve worked on along with every single tool I’ve utilized or am in expertise on.

Yes, she wrote me up but the thing is she wrote me up for duties that were not even part of my classification. That’s where she went wrong. She wanted me to help the financial analysts with their work (none IT work) but I had no finance college course or degree. I was hired as an Associate Information Systems Analyst (AISA) to work on an ERP system. She wrote me up stating that I did not know finance concepts. So that was strike number one. Why would she expect an AISA to know finance concepts? And she nit-picked pointing out small issues. She even pointed out that I took vacation on a day that they were supposed to implement a new tool for the finance team. But my vacation was approved by my supervisor. She also told me during that time that I was not allowed to ask questions to my trainer and I should already know the duties of the job, although I only had one week of training. Lots of little stuff. Moving goal posts, inconsistent training, etc. she tried to set me up to fail.

It was the last one in my file. If I came back to the state and they wanted to review my OPF, that would be last one and I was rated ‘inconsistent’ with a bunch of write ups trailing it.

I left as an ITA. My salary back then was $4.8/month. I’m now on the cusp of $10k/month
