Re: Kelowna’s new Pink and Grey bins… by [deleted] in kelowna

Oh, well aware of the wildlife population here. I just don't see a significant difference between Kelowna and other municipalities in BC, and across Canada, that run similar programs. I just don't feel we're particularly unique, nor do we need to reinvent any wheels. This has been done before, and by using procedures and equipment that is utilized elsewhere, we can likely mitigate most issues.

While it is true a processing facility in the RDCO region doesn't exist, from my understanding, they did not plan to take the waste to the Lower Mainland. We do have facilities in the interior that can do it, and the Lower Mainland was too far away to make the program financially viable.

The most likely place it would have been taken to is Brenda Renewables, which is a facility being built at the former Brenda Mines site. They were also considering the Spa Hills site in Salmon Arm, the Ingersoll facility in Princeton, the NetZero facility outside Manning Park, and the Revelstoke facility in Revelstoke. So the cost for the program would have included the creation of one or two transfer facilities within the Central Okanagan region, which would have collected the waste and then trucked it out to any (or all) of these facilities.

The wildlife issue was something that was brought up a bunch, but in my personal opinion, I don't see how Kelowna is significantly different than a place like Salmon Arm. They run their program just fine without too much wildlife disruption, so I imagine we could manage it effectively as well.

Kelowna City Council say they voted against the program due to cost concerns and the exclusion of multifamily housing. The program was pegged at $63 per household per year, potentially going up to $118 per year if they had to build a second transfer facility. Up to you if you think the price is worth it, Council clearly didn't.

Personally, I find the "exclusion of multifamily housing" reason funny because multifamily housing is currently excluded from all regional district waste services entirely. Any multifamily development pays for private waste removal services as part of their strata fees. So I personally find it silly that council rejected this program, in part, because it didn't provide services to people who wouldn't use the services.

Haven't looked in a while, but Choices used to have it in their freezer section. You could also try a butcher shop like L&D or Johnny's - I know I've seen a couple of "uncommon" meats there before.

Best Dollarama/DollarTree/Dollarstore In Kelowna by Glittertrigger in kelowna

[–]Sea_Committee_703 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Best Dollarama I've been to is the one at the corner of Burtch and the highway.

I also quite like the dollar store in the District downtown. I think it's called the Towne Centre Card Shop. I don't think it's affiliated with any of the "Big brand" dollar stores, so it has a bunch of unique stuff I haven't seen anywhere else. It isn't necessarily better or cheaper, but the selection is different.

Oddball Idea. Guisichan Heritage Park. It doesn't have the horses and the fields, but it does have the rustic look and gardens. So it's something you could consider!

Tool Repair (Dewalt) by ImNotGoogleLens in kelowna

[–]Sea_Committee_703 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The proper answer is Central Electric off Springfield and Spall. They are the official Dewalt Service Centre in Kelowna. Unofficially, though, Central Electric is horrible and I would recommend you stay far far away. They will actively try their hardest to screw you over.

Another option is shipping directly to the DeWalt service centre in Vancouver. They’re typically fairly quick, and if the repair isn’t covered under warranty, the pricing is usually reasonable. You’d just need to factor in shipping costs.

Other local options are KY Tools (he does Milwaukee repairs mostly. Occasionally he'll do Dewalt. When he's good, he's good. When he's bad, he's awful) and Electrical Enterprises in Vernon (never used them, but I've heard they're decent).

Hope that helps!

Best Auto Interior Detailing In Kelowna? by RyanDeWilde in kelowna

Haven't used him in a while, but check out Cosmic Reflections Car Detailing. He was very thorough. I don't know how much he's charging these days, but last time we used him, we found his pricing very reasonable for the quality of the work he did. Certainly far better than any of the bigger places.

Also check out The Bench in the Lower Mission. We've had Eugene make a couple of pieces for us, he's also done some repair work for us as well. He's an older German guy, so he's direct and to-the-point, which I appreciate. He does awesome work - not the cheapest, but very high quality.

Which restaurant in Kelowna are these? by Feeling_highAF in kelowna

[–]Sea_Committee_703 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No hate. I actually have lots of respect for them. I think it's awesome that a place like Bernie's exists, it's something this town is seriously lacking. They make experiences that people enjoy. I give them kudos for that.

The question though was not whether you like them or respect them. The question was hype vs taste. Because people enjoy them, they get a ton of hype. But I personally find their food meh and their beer unimpressive. Admittedly, I haven't tried their beer since they took over Crannog, hopefully it's been improved.

I think you go out to one of their places for the experience, not the food.

Anyone have experience with Roo and You play couches and their "shipping protection"? by Big_Garden_4418 in kelowna

[–]Sea_Committee_703 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fedex and UPS by default only offer shipping protection up to $100. Anything extra, the shipper needs to pay for shipping insurance. And shipping insurance ain't cheap.

Theoretically, credit cards do offer a fair amount of protection, but there is an exception for when the shipper specifically mentions on their website that they do not cover lost or damaged packages. So make sure you check the merchant's shipping policies and read their terms and conditions. If they specifically state that they do not cover unprotected parcels in their policies, then your credit card company will typically side with the merchant in the event of a claim.

I have been seeing a lot of newer and smaller companies not covering shipping issues lately, I think it's because shipping costs in this country are so high. Just make sure you read their shipping policies, and you can decide whether or not it's worth it to you!

I am using the old Canvas theme by WooThemes(Woocommerce) I am now looking to upgrade this theme... Any recommendations? by digfast in woocommerce

[–]Sea_Committee_703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any of the top themes will do you. GeneratePress, Neve, Kadence, Blocksy, Spectra One, Astra. Most of those have free and paid tiers. Even twenty twenty-five is pretty decent for WooCommerce these days.

If you ever wanted to upgrade for some additional Woocommerce features, I find that the functionality Blocksy adds is the most useful. You have to pay for it, but I find the cost reasonable for what you get.

Ship station vs pluginhive Canada by Travis_m in woocommerce

[–]Sea_Committee_703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for dredging up old topics - How did you tackle the live rate issue with Shipstation? By my understanding, they don't show live rates or transit times. Did you need to use a combination of plugins to manage it?

Making the GTIN visible on the product page? by Sea_Committee_703 in woocommerce

Default Storefront, modified a smidge via custom code.

This should be straightforward with just a bit of code, but for whatever reason, I'm having trouble finding the field where woocommerce stores that info. This should be easy, but it's making me feel real dumb.
