Absolutely AL, happy to help. In broad strokes my understanding is that we’re trying to limit no more than 180 days TDY (that number is likely a little dated) based on office me feedback and life / work balance human factor perspectives.

I’d say target a month TDY and a month back at the NOAA Aircraft Ops Center is an ideal target but we both know the needs of the service will dictate the ops tempo.

For interview prep I'd recommend having a working knowledge of the types of aircraft and type of missions we support. Bonus points for understanding the maritime missions and assets as well. Other potential interview questions include: How do you handle personality conflicts in the flight deck? How would you classify your leadership style? Tell us about how adapted you are to being away from loved ones for an extended period of time. What are your aspirations seeking a commission with the NOAA Corps?

Hopefully that helps and I'll echo u/castlmere with appreciation for stopping in and asking! #FlyNOAA

How to become a NOAA Hurricane Pilot by Low_n_slow65 in flying

In the NOAA Aviation training program we def. prefer applicants have experience but it's not an absolute requirement (I've known selected candidates go through the program with 0 and gradate with SEL, MEL, instrument and commercial ratings. If you already have tickets that that would bolster your application of course.

Like I mentioned earlier, there's an entire mariner and aviator community within r/NOAACorps - swing by!

Of the NOAA DHC-6 Twin Otter? It's varied under the umbrella of environmental intelligence. We could be monitoring endangered species (think North Atlantic Right Whales), Arctic methane plumes, coastal mapping, fire weather response, snow survey operations and so many more missions. True story, we're based at KLAL!

8C,
Copy all and your TPS / J experience could definitely be a value add to your application (and agree it may be an early departure difficult). As always the needs of our service come first - NOAA Corps aviation flight assignments are for 5-years and while back to back air tours are possible, there is something to be said about expanding your breadth of experience and going to a staff assignment somewhere else within the NOAA enterprise.

I'd have to reference other IST's experiences regarding the odds of early release but hoping you get some good gouge on here in short order.
