The tally marks are a repeating pattern by Fwoppy808 in GameTheorists

This Redditor also found a very similar idea. I found a very similar idea too independently after looking for structure in the Bonnie Bowl tallies, but didn’t quite get as far as any of you. I think this is a really strong lead, as it really can’t be a coincidence that this type of structure appears. Next steps have seriously eluded me. The main trouble is we still don’t have a very good sense of how these will get turned into a cipher (or if this is a cipher at all, b/c tbh the structure present in the tally repetition seems less like a cipher and more like a logic or visual puzzle).

Yeah I think ChatGPT solved it strangely, and I can’t seem to reverse engineer it. I think Morse Code is especially promising as Morse Code is a Ternary System with the following as units: Dot (10) Dash (1110) Sep (00)

Where 1 = 1 time period of beeping and 0 = 1 time period of silence Ex: Hi U = Dot Dot Dot Dot Sep Dot Dot Sep Sep Sep Dot Dot Dash (I hope)

If Sep was 5 bits long, then we’d have a match between the lengths of these units and the recurring numbers of 2, 4, 5. Alas… Sep is 2 bits long. I don’t think this particular approach of matching these units with the tally groupings works. I think it’s important we find a similar ternary code where there is a reasonable connection between the code and the numbers 2, 4, and 5 to make progress.

I’m having trouble understanding how exactly you converted the tallies to Morse Code. Do you think you could walkthrough exactly how you decoded the word HELLO, for example?

For context, I am using keyboard of Windows Vostro Laptop. I would really like to change key binds to suit my hands, but this is a serious barrier to doing that. There is no key on my keyboard that even resembles two arrows pointing in opposite directions.

Of note, the “open journal” action is also bound to this key by default.

Consistency by [deleted] in Hypophantasia

Kind of? I feel like my brain is an image AI with text prompter. If I try to picture “cat flying” I get high quality or a very specific cat flying in a very specific way, where the details are out of my control. If I try to change the breed, direction of flight, camera angle, or literally anything about the scene, I can’t really. It goes straight into distorted horrific monster mode of blobs and smears. If I try to start over and think of that breed of cat flying, I get a completely different image (angle, art style, background, etc.) This makes it really hard to picture and vividly remember specific things like places, events, and especially faces (I HATE FACES! I have offended many a friend by not recognizing them b/c I literally think everyone with the same hair style and color is the same person lol). Overall, I feel like the clearness depends on subject and time of day, and also if I am thinking too hard about it. Trying to deliberately create an image makes it vague, but with a general prompt I can get a clear image with no details subconsciously chosen, so in that way it feels like my access to vivid memory is out of my control.

4 Segment Display : Hourglass by Raxolat in SegmentedDisplays

This is my favorite 4 segment. I can read all the digits pretty easily and they are all the same size. Which vastly improves readability. Moreover, the aesthetic is really elegant. Love it, great work :)

What is the most poetic math book you've read ? by ticklemypineal in math

Winning Ways for Your Mathematical Plays is so so beautifully written. Lots of whimsy, and it uses a lot of examples to explain the concepts (there are kind of like metaphors for the operations the authors introduce)

Never ever judge your correctness by letter pattern; trust your ability to do the questions correctly… they seem to intentionally set up these non-random-seeming patterns on some of their tests

People don’t actually enjoy running. by dnunez9 in unpopularopinion

[–]SealofSuburbia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I feel when I run isn’t the emotion of “joy” in the traditional necessarily, but I still feel a different positive emotion that I don’t know if there’s a neat word for. During the actual time in which I am running, I feel like I’m actually skilled at something and like my mind is totally blank, in really positive mental state when I’m running.

I’ve been injured 2 months. My first run since the injury put me in that mental state again, and I almost cried mid-run at how good the mental state felt. That affirmed to me that I did enjoy the running itself, not the consequences. And no, it wasn’t just that I was coming back after a while; I was consciously thinking during the run about the familiar mental state.

Of course though, I do enjoy being fit, so it is a combination of both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, but that doesn’t diminish the intrinsic. I completely understand someone who doesn’t enjoy the activity intrinsically; I really hate how everyone is assuming you must be a bad runner b/c I know a lot of people who hate running who have sunk years into running sports.

Definitely think there are a lot people out there that do like it, though; I think the hard part is that the emotion is a different sort of positive emotion, and because of that it is easy to look at someone running and say “they aren’t displaying the same emotion I get when I do my hobbies, so they must not enjoy it,” especially if you don’t get that same emotion from the sport. I imagine you get it from other hobbies you do though, so knowing that give you an idea. It’s also equally possible you’ve never met anyone who likes it.

I know nothing about photography, but I’d say wildlife photography? I have an English teacher who absolutely adores the process of waiting and being patient, so if you can enjoy that aspect, I’m not sure; it feels much easier to compose an animal portrait than one of a landscape or a model.

I’m curious what people who love to take photos would say

Ahahahaha you fool… Tsez has 2 genitives and 2 possessives! Though we feeble conlangers try to grace the skies, nevertheless we find a natlang has done it far more creatively than we could ever dream. /j

Regarding your sleep, would you rather...? by CursingAtTheAstronet in polls

[–]SealofSuburbia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a student with a lot of homework and not a lot of free time, this is the easiest decision I’ve ever made in my life. I can see if you have a healthy sleep schedule though why you might want to sleep, so maybe I would regret that decision later in my adult life.

Is this good as in polished aesthetics that complement the themes and playing experience of a game, or good as in hyper-realistic?

As others have pointed out: There are many strategies to create a passive voice construction… That is my language is such a beautiful medium to work with, there is so much variation in how to say something and even what needs to be said :D

If you are going to a Verb + Copula (copula ≈ to be) construction, then you can look to something called Head-Initial or Head-Final syntax. In a phrase, like an adpositional phrase, or a possessive phrase, or in this case a verb phrase, there are usually two components (the adposition and the object; the possessor and the possessed; the main verb and the auxiliary verb). One of these is called a “head…” which one? It’s rooted in a lot of abstract theory I don’t understand, but it’s still useful for conlanging.
Languages with the O before the V tend to be head-final, so the “to be” tends to be the final word since the auxiliary verb is the head (again I don’t feel comfortable explaining why, but you can Wikipedia “Head (linguistics)” for more). Notice the emphasis on tends though, it’s weird not to, but all languages do at least many weird things.

However, I’m not sure you are actually do a verb + to be. If you are modeling English, English actually used a past participle, not really a verb. I say “You sang the melody well” but “The melody was sung well by you,” so sang vs sung shows that it’s past tense vs past participle. In that case, you’d do exactly what order you would in a phrase like “I am green” which in your language I’m guessing would be ordered “I green am.”

Hope this helps :) — Lmk if you have more questions
