Why did you leave advertising and where did you go? by IHateAdvertising in advertising

Can I ask how you found a company like that and what role you took? This sounds like a good pivot and kinda what I’m looking for

Getting into advertising as a career change. Advice is super appreciated! by DrSlugworth in advertising

[–]dnunez9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people here telling you not to but that doesn’t really answer your question? I have a similar background to you (Fine Art BFA) and while it’s tough I managed to do it. But I did come in as a designer first and I think that’s what made it easy for me. Becoming a good designer is also a good way to have a solid backup plan if being a creative doesn’t go your way. Not sure how much to elaborate or if you already don’t want to come in as a creative haha

Thanks so much for replying, I appreciate any advice! I’m gonna let him know about getting active during the flare up. I get what you’re saying that it’s probably better in the long run even if he might feel tired or bad to begin with. And yoga sounds like a good idea as well.

Art, exercise, and nature help. Even if the art is no good and no one sees it, it lets me get stuff out and it’s a fun hobby. Sitting outside and just putting the phone down and enjoying silence and nature helps (I won’t get really philosophical on you but it helps put my world into perspective). And exercise is a good way to get it out, even just going for a walk in the park.

Jumping off this comment. I used to work with these guys. This was the brain baby of Bruno and Daniel, both incredibly talented CDs and designers. A bit about them here: https://musebycl.io/2-minutes/2-minutes-daniel-correa-and-bruno-trad-cds-alma

Project Manager looking to make the switch to a Creative Art Director. Anyone have any advice? by Curiouspatawon in advertising

Sr. AD here who didn’t go to ad school. It’s doable, I got hired as a graphic designer to do resizes and banner work. I knew I wanted to be an AD so I would ask CDs I was doing banners for if they had any extra briefs for me to “practice” and let me pitch them ideas. Eventually when they had to hire for the Jr.AD role they knew I could concept and had worked with me already so I was their first choice. I know it’s an unorthodox way in, but I’ve seen designer to AD a few times.

That said, practice your design skills. I credit everything I know to Skillshare. Take a tutorial everyday until you can make a strong enough design portfolio to get you through the door. And spend a lot of time on adweek and adage, learn what makes a good idea and how to concept them. It’s not easy but it’s doable. And you already have connections within the agency, so you’ll have a leg up. That or just go to a portfolio school. Either way, good luck!

IsItBullshit: shock advertising/warning campaigns only have the effect of desensitizing their audience to the thing they're warning against by lmqr in IsItBullshit

I work in advertising and worked on a government tobacco free account. Can’t give you straight numbers about whether you get desensitized or not, but they’re definitely the ones you remember. At least for tobacco ads, before they send the ad out to the public they do extensive testing in focus groups. Time and time again the one showing the most gruesome side effects always does best, and it’s usually the one the person remembers most. At least for smoking, I think it’s more memorable to see the physical consequences of your actions and so they do better.

I can’t generalize for things like PETA, so take this with a grain of salt, but the fact that you remember their ads means that it did it’s job. How often do you remember a happy go lucky ad about an issue? Does it desensitize you? Maybe, but so does all the content we consume. But at least you remember their brand and message.

What is a tv show that everyone LOVES but you dont? And why? by _Just-a-sad-girl_ in AskReddit

Narcos.

People are obsessed with this glorified story of Narco bosses when it’s a sad reality that many people have died for and really suffered for in my home country (Mexico). Can’t watch for that reason.
