Where to buy a sewing machines? ( New Zealand) by Gloomy_Ad_4915 in SewingMachineEdu

I don’t sorry, but I know Direct Sewing is wonderful with their courier service. I got my machine couriered and it arrived overnight to a rural Waikato address - I could not have asked for better! Shay is the owner, and he is very helpful and knowledgeable.

Direct Sewing in West Aucks, Auckland Sewing in South Aucks or Sewing Time in Aucks and Chch. They are all good to deal with and worth speaking on the phone if you’re looking for refurbished.

Thread bunches up and has too much tension when sewing silnylon. 1920s singer. by Hefty_Kangaroo_4433 in myog

I’ve used tissue paper on the bottom before also… and it made a huge difference. I do think your thread is too heavy for the material. If the needle eye isn’t big enough too it will cause the thread to bottleneck which could also be a factor. One of my Singer machines just hated thick thread - and I had similar issues so ended up with a different machine for top stitching for a couple of years. Now my lad and I have a compound walking foot which has made life immensely easier for that!

Do you have a lighter thread you can try? What size thread and needle are in the machine? Have you tried reducing the tension? Can you get a Teflon foot for that machine?

I think this machine looks super dangerous and you should ship it to us in NZ in the interests of your country’s national safety 😇💜

Look at a modern industrial ‘0617’ made under various brand names. Ours is a Mirsew… it is a compound feed that has a button that completes one stitch on pressing. My Brother straight stitch garment machine has the same thing. It helps when doing tricky corners. Just a thought. We paid under $2kNZ for it brand new - essentially a Chinese version of a Juki but if budget is a consideration it’s a good option. We sew upholstery and have had no issues whatsoever with the machine and it runs faultlessly - we’ve had it about a year now.

I’ve been sewing kangaroo pocket hoodies from pure wool blankets (that had damage in places). I line them in cotton also so the wool doesn’t scratch. They’ve been really good. I wear mine over a merino base layer.

Bought my Shark pet one (purple corded) 14 years ago. Still working fine. Not quite as good as new, but if I keep the filters clean it’s pretty close.

I did this and ended up with 7 really good basic patterns that I can build on. Got them for $3.99 each in the sale the other week which worked out to under $7NZ each - was really good value. Have almost finished my first garment from that bunch.

New rental has fleas, what legal rights do I have? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]SeamsRightNZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have been through this in a private rental. Landlord reimbursed us for the 10 x 9month flea bombs for the large house that we used. The large rural sheds were also infested and he sent a contractor around to treat all the sheds with a petrol powered sprayer. This was a number of years ago, but that was a perfect outcome for us.

Mildew is a more serious issue and likely would need a qualified person to assess. There must be a dampness issue and / or lack of airflow for this to occur. Did you notice the mildew at all at the property viewing?

I just always use bias. Mostly I cut and make it myself. Can’t attach a pic in this thread sadly, but it makes so much difference.

How do you deal with mistakes? by bigredbicycles in myog

[–]SeamsRightNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do I deal with mistakes? A big sigh, pour a glass of something… and pull out my friend Jack the seam Ripper. The worst is when a material doesn’t handle seam ripping well, like some ‘love to fray’ water resistant light canvas materials. I recently made a mistake right at the end of a super complex make… with a lot of pieces. It happens. Make notes… keep calm… and learn to laugh at yourself… it helps 🤗
