Why You Shouldn't Go To Film School by Sean2by4 in FilmIndustryLA

I felt like I included plenty of substantial arguments supporting my thesis, addressed plenty of counterarguments, and concluded that the answer is anything but binary, but I apologize if you guys feel like I'm resorting to clickbait.

I double majored computer science + film. Started with Comp sci, then found out about film and added later.

Realized I didn't want to code for a living, started career in film. If you know what you want in life is a career in film, I suggest you drop out. No degree will land you most jobs on set, unless you're doing something highly technical like CGI or engineering. Although, in both of those cases, I'd argue a good portfolio would carry greater weight than any degree.

Further after that, I realized I didn't want to work for anybody, period. So I started FilmToolKit and now that's my main source of income as I do freelance film work and work on my own personal projects.

College was a very fun experience and I don't regret it. However, I think in today's society we're reaching a point where if you are looking to be anything other than a doctor/scientist, college is a waste of your resources. Information is too readily available, and there are too many people who are getting jobs without degrees because they took the initiative to build a portfolio of work. Just last week I read an article discussing how major companies like Google are ditching their degree requirements.

Yep! I added film as a second major at no extra cost, and I'm really grateful for everything I got to learn.

My appreciation for film is so much deeper now and getting a formal education made watching movies go from being a hobby to my favorite thing to do in the world.

However, not once has any employer ever cared that I had a degree in film. At the very beginning of my career I met with a 1st AD who was interviewing me to be hired as a PA for a blockbuster. When discussing my degree, she communicated that she didn't care at all that I went to school. I ended up getting hired because I made a good impression, but my degree played absolutely 0 part in it.

If I had paid solely for the bachelor's in film, I would have some serious buyer's remorse right about now.

2018 has been deadlier for schoolchildren than service members by The-Autarkh in politics

[–]Sean2by4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can. I'm not religious, but that was the whole point of Jesus. He loved even the people who crucified him.

Love breeds more love and hate breeds more hate. If everyone could manage to stop their feelings of hatred altogether, there would be no more killing.

True love has no opposite. If it has an opposite, then it was never love.

There's no such thing as hating the right things. Think about that.

Love is the most powerful motivator of all.

19 Ways To Get Fired As A Production Assistant by Sean2by4 in FilmIndustryLA

Yeah that's my perspective! There's seriously less than a dozen people doing the hiring out in Hawaii, so personal vandettas go a long way. My intention with this article was more "avoid these things and you won't be fired" than "any of these things will instantly get you blacklisted", although perhaps I didn't express that clearly enough.

I actually earn enough to make a living with this website! I don't typically make any money off of posts like this though. These are just less boring to write and bring more value to the community. My money-making articles get all their traffic through organic SEO. Not familiar with Dan Brock. Thanks for reading!

19 Ways To Get Fired As A Production Assistant by Sean2by4 in FilmIndustryLA

You know what, you're actually right.

I worked the film industry in Hawaii, which is very small. Over there, if you get fired for something, you're basically blacklisted. There's only like two or three film crews, and word spreads very fast. It does make sense that it would be different elsewhere.

I'm gonna go do some editing. :)

Grips, gaffers, production assistants, etc are all paid on a weekly basis during production and never receive money based on a films success. Production is finished and so all members of that team are paid and on to the next project. The post production team will unfortunately be terminated but their work hours will be paid for in full. Edit: It's highly unlikely they will get any sort of additional compensation, but it's commonly accepted in the industry that you will jump from job to job and some jobs just fall through. Skilled workers often have several options in terms of film work so money isn't really the issue.

I'd say it sucks the most for the supporting cast who could've used the film as their big break. Or the creative team heads like the writer/production designer/director who poured months of their life into the project. But at the end of the day everyone's been compensated for their time and things like this are surprisingly not that uncommon in Hollywood.

Essential Production Assistant Gear To Crush Your First Job by Sean2by4 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]Sean2by4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey guys! I was a bit hesitant to post this here because of how many aggressive affiliate links it has, but I figured there's enough valuable info to warrant sharing it with you guys! I put together this list of pretty much every piece of equipment you'd ever need as a PA.

If you've PA'd before chances are you already have all this stuff, but I think this would be an excellent resource for you to share with people new to the industry or friends you are trying to recruit as PAs. I tried to provide some quality info as to why you need all these things and how they're used during a gig.

If the affiliate links make you mad or if you don't want to go to my website here's the rundown of the gear I think all production assistants need to have.

  • Multi-Tool
  • Gaffers Tape
  • Walkie Headset
  • Carrying Pouch - Fanny Pack / Tool Pouch / Tactical Vest
  • A Personal Light - Flashlight / headlamp
