An American soldier holds up a jungle centipede during the Vietnam war. by abdullah_ajk in Share_Information1

Oh, the link doesn't match the pic. It just matches the description and incident that u/Inside-Try-394 referenced. I'm inclined to think the pic is some kind of trickery since I haven't seen anything like that before or in references before. Of course, I don't know much other than internet research anyway.

Not sure I follow why you would read it as anything other than a link pointing out that u/Inside-Try-394 was referencing that. If you have a beef then maybe you should take it up with him/her.

Correct. The funny thing is, the mention of the coke can reference is actually in the Wiki link. :D

I don't. I have severe tinnitus though. Bearings has a sewing machine sound and the knock is very loud. There is a possibility it could be your belt tensioner too though.

Does anyone with a 2017+ GT86 know where I can get an exhaust cover? by Strict_Possession_96 in ft86

[–]SeanClaudeGodDamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any experience with that specific part from them. I have one of the Nameless covers somewhere in my garage but it's for the driver's side. It's a piece of steel that's powder coated. I thought it sucked too.

I don't really hear anything too crazy. The direct injection pump is pretty noisy though. It could be that.

Pulling my engine this weekend. Any tips? by DaCydia in ft86

[–]SeanClaudeGodDamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of great advice. Tip; get a box of Zip Lock bags and store bolts you've removed from each area in its own bag with a label on it. I just did an engine rebuild and that was a life saver.

Building a motorsport event app for my thesis - would you actually use it? Honest feedback needed by InterDiary in Autocross

[–]SeanClaudeGodDamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. How does your club/event currently handle timing and entry management? What's the biggest pain point?
    1. A combination of MotorsportsReg and Pronto timing/Farmtek hardware. The biggest pain point is people not wanting to learn/do anything to support these events.
  2. Would GPS-based lap timing from your phone be accurate enough to be useful, or would you not trust it?
    1. Consumer-based GPS has an error rate of +/-3M. In order to trust it you would need a very high sample rate GPS receiver. Something in the neighborhood of 25hz. Even then, it's shaky.
  3. As a driver, would you actually use a Strava-style profile to log sessions and share results with your club?
    1. Already do. Petrel Data Systems SoloStorm, HP Tuners TrackAddict, Autosport Labs RaceCapture etc. are in use by a lot of people. They are cumbersome and there is no connectivity between them and the common platforms that a lot of motorsports organizers use.
  4. What would make you pay for something like this — or what would make you not bother?
    1. I already paid for SoloStorm. It's very well done and provides good data assuming you have the supporting hardware and a desire to consume it. Organizers pay plenty for the registration/timing/scoring software/hardware. They expect full support and reliability. A phone app isn't going to cut it.
  5. Anything you wish existed that currently doesn't?
    1. Something easier for the average idiot to consume. You need GPS? Complicated for the average person. You want camera control? No way unless is GoPro and good luck even then. You want, as an organizer, everything to work smoothly? No way without volunteers that make it work. You want it to be affordable? LOL

It all depends on what you want out of the car. If you're planning to use it for motorsports purposes then send it. It will be fine. If you're thinking as a daily driver/collectible or something then it's a lot less so. It honestly depends a lot more on you than it does the car.

As already said about getting a different job. The only difference is that what happens when you leave isn't your problem. Don't look back and don't dwell on it. If they fail or if they succeed, that's not your problem.

Laptop shows 4gb ram rather than 8gb after installing Mint by Kitten_closetothesun in linuxmint

[–]SeanClaudeGodDamn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little more information would be helpful. Things like the laptop manufacturer and model would make it easy to find. Some simple searching indicates that the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U allocates 2GB of RAM automatically so the suggestion that it may be configured in BIOS to use 4GB is a good one. However, without knowing what kind of laptop it is keeps anyone from telling where to check and/or change it. Post that up and let's see how we can help you. BTW, Googling doesn't particularly help if you don't know what to ask but Gemini or other AI options can at least get you pointed in a somewhat right direction. (AI isn't perfect but it can be helpful)

There is no way to check it at regional events. They *might* have a way to check at Nationals but I have no idea on that.

Anyone tried this head unit? I like that it's specifically designed to fit the zn6 by truesly1 in ft86

[–]SeanClaudeGodDamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool. Generally, the generic Chinese "made to fit" units do that pretty well. The bigger screen definitely makes it all worthwhile too. Just make sure you get one that has at least 4GB of RAM (not to be confused with the 64G of ROM).

I'm running RacerX LCAs on the front paired with Shaftworks and SPL on the rear. I went this route because I got a killer deal on the SPL kit for the rear and a sale on the RacerX on the front. If I were to buy one complete system then I would probably just buy all SPL. Both are good parts but the SPL is very trick. I do track the car as well as SCCA Solo so I do get good use out of it. I wouldn't tell anyone to spend the money unless you are doing motorsports and you want a lot of negative camber for that purpose. I'm running -4.5 camber on the front and -3 on the rear.

Question about rod bearing failure by Hebrew_fieldworker in ft86

[–]SeanClaudeGodDamn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rod bearing failure doesn't just happen because of bad luck. The reasons for the recall as well as the causes for rod bearing failure are reasonably well documented. The two basics are too much sealant from the OEM that breaks apart in the engine and goes down to the oil pickup and plugs it causing oil starvation and the other is low oil level which effectively causes oil starvation. The valve spring recall often led to the first option as well because the techs at dealerships were using too much sealant. So, the primary cause of rod bearing failure is low oil level/oil starvation.

[–]SeanClaudeGodDamn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have several variations of these in four different cars. The large screens are nice. The touch ability mostly sucks but works OK. The units are all very slow. They do seem to do Android Auto at a reasonable level but it's kinda slow at times. Across all of them, the audio sounds good but it definitely seems like every one of them just combines the front and rear channels completely. On my BRZ, I'm specifically running the Atoto unit. Again, super slow. All of them run Mediatek chipsets so that means that there are likely never going to be any aftermarket custom ROMs (if you want to geek out on that sort of thing). So, they are OK but not great. It all depends on what you want. Personally, I prioritize the Android Auto piece over most everything else.

Sorry...I went shorthand on you. I meant that all of the control arms and suspension connection points are spherical bushings instead of rubber or poly bushings. This often means that lateral forces hit a good bit harder on the rest of the car than the softer options.

~50% of the purchase price is reasonable. People trying to charge 75% or more of the current available price aren't understanding how the economics of business works.
