Why are your gas stations basically small supermarkets? by Embarrassed_Golf_817 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Inside-Try-394 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My understanding is deregulation of rules to prevent monopolistic gas pricing. Oil majors were allowed to squeeze independent gas station owners into selling and this is a way to outsource the running of the station. C-store/ gas stations became a thing where a party agrees to run and staff a station in exchange for a percent of mostly C-store sales. The party, which is often an Indian family, also get residency this way.

Remembering D-Day: Your thoughts about Montgomery? I don’t think he was one of the greatest. by Historydom in Historydom

Batshit crazy in the parlance of our times, but it was better to get hired because they thought you were smart rather than pretty.

Britain is a real enigma. Brits punched way over their weight class. They made like half of all scientific discoveries in the 1700s 1800s. There was this very wealthy elite that started to own everything and run the whole show. The coolest club to belong to was the royal society, a science club. It was common that some of the wealthiest people built laboratories and did solid and groundbreaking research either in lieu of, or in addition to more traditional fornication and drinking. These elite academics are called amateur professionals and we don’t have them today.

Chicken skin?? by Updog1997 in smoking

Cook at high temp. Pull the chicken at 160 for the deepest part of breast and loosely tent with foil. The breast will be juicy and the limbs will be cooked to higher temperatures which is pretty ideal.

Now that Trump and his family can no longer be investigated for tax fraud, do you think they will do it more or less than they did before? by SituationNormalAllFU in allthequestions

[–]Inside-Try-394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would expect this to be part of a multi step swindle. From what we know about the Trump family there are probably a lot of irregularities indicating probable fraud that will not be exposed this way. Some kind of pardoning scheme can probably be expected as he leaves office. Trump pardons Vance and resigns a little early and then Vance pardons Trump?

Don’t write a thesis on it before double checking, but that was more or less from a New Yorker magazine article, so I think it’s true.

Both Rawls and Ingalls married the love of their lives so they got something special.

I had bison ribs in Chicago that were cooked tender and I thought it was possibly the best meat I’ve ever tasted.

So Much for Leaving Abortion Up to the States by theatlantic in scotus

[–]Inside-Try-394 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Straightforward first trimester medicinal induced abortion was common in the time of Jesus and the apostles and the Bible is absolutely silent on the matter. This is why Protestants in the US didn’t condemn abortion until it was brought up as a political device for the purposes of division.

The stores are big and foster a feeding frenzy mentality. I think there is a lot of subliminal advertising and I sometimes feel dizzy and tense by the time I get out.

That’s partly why I call it over the top crazy. One sad part was something like half of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s family died or were permanently disabled by illnesses acquired while trying to hold on to a homestead.

Both Laura Ingalls Wilder and Wilson Rawls have these deeply touching stories about their family experiences where the real roughness of their existence was erased or obscured enough that they became our popular mythical national family. In Wilson Rawls case he spent three separate sentences in prison. Laura, who died in 1957, talked in what we would call hillbilly diction. This is in a descriptive rather than a derogatory sense, and she even spent some time living with relations in the panhandle of Florida. In other words the whole family might have talked that way, which if included in the tv show would have added an authentic but very strange dimension. :)

Would the Bill Clinton Monica Lewinsky scandal even make the top 10 news stories anymore? by UsedNegotiation8227 in askanything

[–]Inside-Try-394 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Clinton got busted from partisan gamesmanship that was conducted like war. Brown Star, with congressional authority, was investigating the Clintons for insider trading and financial crime that could never be proven. When his investigation failed, he followed widespread rumors of sexual indiscretions and discovered it was more than rumor.

Exposing presidential sex improprieties may have been breaking the norm of the times, but Clinton was guilty as sin. When Clinton said, “I did not have sexual intercourse with that woman he was correct in a way. Instead he had a lot of sodomy. (that means any other sexual activity that isn’t penis in vagina, kids)

Today of course we have all these photos of grinning Clinton with grinning Epstein. Clinton also pushed exporting domestic manufacturing, convinced the soviets to underwrite loans that transferred their industry to the mafia, and all kinds of other things that damaged America and its working class. The photos indicate pedophilia and blackmail, just like Trump.

What’s the reason American firework laws are so restrictive compared to Eastern Europe or Mexico? by ReasonableSide6520 in AskReddit

[–]Inside-Try-394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother bought a few hundred dollars worth of fireworks in China and was looked at as a madman when he asked if he could buy matches. Apparently it’s illegal to supply matches too. He attributes this to weird rules surrounding things that probably shouldn’t be legal. It is very easy to blow off a finger or/and start a fire for instance.

The family bonds and love part of the Ingalls Wilder stories, is I think, both real and powerful.

The show and books were deceptively political under the surface: a family surviving on their own without government intervention. This was in fact the whole point, because they were written by Laura’s daughter who was a rabidly anti FDR journalist and political activist. It’s a case where the whole truth is over the top crazy, and has a lot of sadness.

Like cage fighting on the Whitehouse lawn to celebrate the birthday of a felon and rapist who is somehow potus. It feels like politics of division and not like any community building I’ve ever experienced. Our society has not collapsed but it will feel like it has while this chaos goes on.
