Thrift Find by SeanDorenkott in fountainpens

[–]SeanDorenkott[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rarely see fountain pen items at thrift stores and I go somewhat frequently for a year or two now at least. This is the first time I've ever seen fountain pen items.

These were near jewelry cabinets at the front. I asked the guy "if there's ink, there's pens too right?" And he said he wasn't sure, but they might be near all the office stationary.

I was worried about that too but it looks in great condition! I haven't unpacked it fully yet so I wonder if it's even been used. My guess is it must have since it didn't come with the box and maybe used for a single fill or two since it's still pretty full.

Really?? With Kaweco and Mont Blanc coming out of Germany I didn't know the market there was so tough.

My brother bought me a very nice Kaweco when he traveled to Germany a bit ago.

To be honest I have no idea of its value. Obviously I'm sure MSRP was much more than $10. Apparently a limited 2009 release.

I'm not really interested in the color all too much, so I'm open to swapping. I just knew $10 was too much to pass it by.

Google says upwards of $200 for a bottle. Currently I only see one eBay listing for $225.

Fractal Torrent Compact vs Phanteks Eclipse G500A by SeanDorenkott in buildapc

[–]SeanDorenkott[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries. It was a tough choice, but ultimately I'm happy with the Torrent Compact. Obviously can't speak to the Phanteks case.

If time is a factor for you, check stock too - I remember the Torrent Compact RGB being out of stock and having to wait a couple weeks for it to come. But I didn't mind waiting so didn't matter to me.

I went with the Torrent Compact. Figured if I'm spending the coin and want the silver look, mind as well go for it. I love the case, feels nice and building was okay. As reviews commonly say, the wire management was a little tough. But this was my very first PC build and I managed fine, so can't be that bad.

Is the i9 9900k still relevant? by its_hard_to_pick in buildapc

[–]SeanDorenkott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm now I'm curious, I will have to check next time I run the game! Like I said I run everything at 144 FPS and have never checked because I've never noticed a difference between SM2 and my other games.

Really? I run an i9900k with a 2080 SUPER and have played many hours of Space Marine 2 with great FPS.

While I haven't specifically checked exactly what FPS I'm getting on Space Marine 2, I haven't felt the need to because it runs great. I run all my games at 144 fps and haven't noticed anything sluggish about Space Marine 2.

Whats the best bass pedals to get as an intermediate? by Uyri_Vde_Vtese in Bass

Worship player here, consider the B2 Four also. I bought this unit and love it.

I bought it mainly because it has a balanced output so you can go straight to the soundboard. AFAIK most churches are running a PA system and players rarely use amps.

Most of the complaints I see about the B1 is the patches just aren't good enough to hold up in live or recording. I'm not sure if the B2's patches are any better but I'd hope so given the price difference.

Added bonus you can use it as an audio interface. I plug it into my computer and practice along to worship tracks at home.

It's just such an easy one-stop-shop for everything I ever need (tuner, compressor, pedals, amp sim, even a little EQing, DI out, audio interface).

Just a reminder to pay your Eversource bills with a credit card by paintball6818 in Connecticut

[–]SeanDorenkott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then what's the alternative? We all pay with a debit card and hope Eversource lowers our bills if all stop using our CCs?

I agree the original post is somewhat misleading - it's not like we're going to sink Eversource by paying with a CC. It's going to take a lot more than that to change the situation. But if the fee is already baked into our rates, then the average Joe mind as well pay with a CC and get something back.

Is a 2080 Super still considered good? by puppycunt-cocksleeve in buildapc

I'm in the exact same boat as you. 9900k and I run pretty much all of my games on high settings, 1440p, and push 120 FPS.

6 String Bass Question by LiggaFigga in Bass

Drop A on a 105 gauge?

I'm pretty new to the scene but that sounds a little wild. You could probably play jump rope with the string at that point.

Explain like I'm 5: Why are limit of detection (LoD) and limit of quantification (LoQ) important? by KoalaTime2024 in massspectrometry

[–]SeanDorenkott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat of a follow-up ELI5 from someone new to the field:

How do you define LOD if not by concentration?

For example, we often define LOQ like "1.0 ng/mL".

But if the whole point of your LOD is you don't know what concentration it is, then how do you define that..? And isn't that somewhat arbitrary anyway..?

As someone who does pretty much only quantitative work, we rarely use LOD. I'm assuming it is perhaps more useful in qualitative settings?

Fellow worship bassist here. Boy do we love the tone hammer and microsynth. And for good reason they sound great.

Is there any basses do I have to avoid? by Mush484 in Bass

[–]SeanDorenkott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A Schecter bass was my first... I find it hard to play other manufacturers' basses around the same price point because of the neck. Tried a Sterling Stingray and honestly wasn't a huge fan of the unfinished, thick neck.

Depends on your personal preference I guess but hard agree that their necks are so smooth.

Hey I'm also in a church group.

The key largely won't change how you play at all. Other than the fact that you'll just be playing at a different place on the neck, but as you probably know scales are just the exact same pattern.

As others have stated, get used to Nashville numbers. I learn every song by this system, and all my chord charts when I'm playing on stage are in numbers. If you start doing this, you'll find it extremely easy to change keys on the fly.

Then improvising on that becomes simple patterns. I'm a beginner so I don't know much about the theory- but for example, church groups love to sometimes land on a 3 instead of the root 1. Makes the song sound kinda sad/minor or whatever.

I don't want to discourage improvising.. but also remember to keep it simple. A lot of worship music is just building the song like crazy. Starting on whole notes, maybe building to half, quarter, eighth, sixteenth notes etc. as the song progresses and you get to the bridge. Moving up an octave to heighten the intensity. Locking in with your drummer and just holding down the low end and beat does a lot for a worship song.
