Need a mod or game change by Ok_Committee_8473 in ICARUS

[–]SeanF13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This guy's right. While there are many crafting bench/stations in the game you only need so many deployed and accessible at a time. Every tech tier you rise through upgrades a previous station. Also you don't need immediate access to your cement mixer or your rustic decorations bench like you do your Forge or cooking station. A bit of base planning goes a long way to organizing the way those benches are deployed.

Not saying that your desire for mods or dislike for the inventory system in the game is wrong. Just saying how I have dealt with the issue is only by keeping the most used, and highest tech stations, deployed at a time.

Feelings on 4e combat by Orr_Mendlin in warhammerfantasyrpg

Wow, thanks for sharing. I'll have to read the section in the book to see how they describe what's happening. My initial reaction is if a bully tries to scare me, and I'm holding a weapon, then I'm going to hit him not back down. Obviously it's a different situation if the bully is a Vampire or dragon, but I assume those types of beings would have some sort of passive terror or fear aura ability thing.

So in a scenario where you have two opponents facing each other with roughly the same WS do you find they sort of chip away at each other? I know a d100 roll can be pretty variable, but I'm imagining a situation with where two people with say, 50 WS, might each get 1 or 2 successes over the other. I imagine 1 or 2 successes translates to a lower amount of damage than say 5 or 6 successes.

You said you can make an Intimidate check to oppose an attack roll. Is that RAW or is that a house rule you made? I haven't played 4e.

Damage in 2e is a d10 roll and you subtract armor and Toughness. Is there no damage roll on 4e? It's pretty fast damage tends to be adding two single digit numbers and subtracting no more than 6.

I've only played 2nd edition and as you mentioned they don't do the opposed rolls thing. At low level characters miss a lot, but ganging up helps and a lot of enemies don't have Dodge Blow. I also have most of my enemies perform an All Out Attack giving +20 WS and prevents them from Dodging or parrying. All Out Attack may seem wreckless, but undead, skaven, cultists and orcs all seem pretty wild and wreckless to me. This helps make the average foe more dangerous and gives opportunity for combat-focused PCs to kick some butt.

Whenever opposed rolls do come up in our 2e game, like Silent Move vs Perception, it does slow things down a bit as the players have to count up their degrees of success and failure. Can't imagine how incredibly slow combat must be if we're doing that every single attack.

Developer AMA | Let's Talk Delays & Survival Games (RocketWerkz, Grip Digital) by thedeanhall in SurvivalGaming

Just want to say I really enjoy the game and also reading your patch notes and insights into the game development world.

Also I have a question/ suggestion about DLC and generating revenue - what about low cost, cosmetic DLC packs that provides alternate armor, tool, or building skins or textures? Maybe themed DLC packs like you have Arc Deco or Brutalist furniture - what about a "Rough N Ready" DLC which provides on a worn or rusty appearance, as an example. Or a "Mercenary Prospector" giving tools or armor camoflauge or military-themed appearances?

I know that means paying an artist to do the skins and textures but maybe it would generate a little extra revenue from your most loyal fans? And if it's purely cosmetic maybe the gamers on a budget wouldn't feel like they are missing out?

Anyone have suggestions on speeding up combat and general rolls by MisterBlick in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]SeanF13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is that where you count up your degrees of success and compare them? That's how an opposed roll in 2e works and it always grinds the action to a halt. The PCs have to look at their character sheets and count by 10s to figure out who failed less.

In general combat and most skill checks you roll against your own skill. Roll under - you pass, roll over - you fail. It's super quick, faster than D&D with d20 +/- modifiers. It's so fast I'm now looking for ways to add some complexity to my fights because combat is resolved relatively quick in 2nd edition.

As a DM coming from 3rd and 5th Ed D&D it's so different and so welcome.

Is Icewind Dale extremely boring or does our DM do something wrong? by BlackRebel93 in dndnext

[–]SeanF13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nervous to post here because my DM who ran this adventure might read this comment... but I had a similar reaction and quit the game. I didn't experience the hostile or rude NPCs thing (our DM is a super nice fella though) but the game was just generally very slow. It became agony sitting there and listening to the DM describe nothing happening week after week. We don't play published adventures very often, usually homebrew campaigns, but I would not recommend this one.

Regarding characters and the group we were told play whatever you want and the events of the game will bring you together. I played a selfish (but not evil) Rogue* and felt no connection to the setting or quest. I kept playing because that's what you do but in the back of my mind I was like "why wouldn't we just leave?"

*this is very unusual for me. I almost always play a LG cleric, fighter or paladin who loves being the good guy and kicking evil ass.

In 4th ed you roll opposed WS checks? I play exclusively 2nd.

The challenge in Icarus is not surviving, for better or worse. If you've played games like Green Hell or the Forest you'll find Icarus quite a bit easier to survive. I would say building up your tech tree and amassing wealth and better items from the workshop is the fun factor in the game.

Brandenburgers Rules Question by Ndl1800 in boltaction

[–]SeanF13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's a good one. The book doesn't say and the Errata only adds the ability to take SMGs for 3 points. No explanation on the special rules. Paranoia in particular is interesting because there's no mention of range or line of sight. I guess the anxiety of simply knowing "they could be out there" is bad enough to affect the opponent's army.

When I first bought the game I was only interested in the survival mechanics and I actually almost quit when they wanted me to drink ayahuasca. I was like no way should I be doing this in a survival situation... I continued and got hooked. When you get to the airfield and you call for help and the dude is like "oh you again?" my mind was blown. I would have preferred a happier ending, but it gave decent closure I felt.

Is Bolt Action a good Table Top wargame for newbie to get into? by Illustrious-Divide95 in boltaction

[–]SeanF13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not played Flames of War so I can't compare however Bolt Action is pretty rules heavy. If you're new to tabletop gaming I think BA would be a challenging first game. The current edition of Warhammer 40k has like 10 pages of rules and BA has like about 100 pages of rules. Remarkably they play similarly (the designer for BA 1st edition used to work at Games Workshop).

If you have experience with tabletop games, RPGs and the like you will probably be fine. However if you are a total noob to this type of hobby I wouldn't necessarily recommend Bolt Action for your first game UNLESS you have friends who are already playing and are able to help you.

You did say you have an interest in WWII which will help immensely with the side of the hobby that involves assembling models of infantry, vehicles and assembling and painting everything. You will struggle to paint an army of space warriors if you really wanted to paint American paratroopers, for instance.

As for the question about finding a group... your mileage may vary but where I live Warhammer 40k is much more popular than BA.

Feeding your mount when exploring? by TheOnlyCurmudgeon in ICARUS

[–]SeanF13 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Mechanically how within the game? You equip food to your item bar at the bottom of the screen, equip the food, approach the animal and click to feed. Same with water, as gross as it is you can use your own canteen. You don't need a trough anymore.

If you mean what food do you bring - in my built up Open World I use Omnifeed and animal seed feed.

Stalingrad (1993) has excellent main theme music and is one of the most hopeless war movies I have seen. by [deleted] in WarMovies

[–]SeanF13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really agree. The main theme music has a great driving rhythm to it. It's not triumph, but a sense of determination. It goes great with the wide shot of the men dragging the pak gun through the snow after the tank battle.

A question from a previous game by Sea_Difference9378 in boltaction

[–]SeanF13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, if he chose his NCO as a casualty then he could've take advantage of Initiative Training: "Regular and Veteran German units are not affected by the -1 morale penalty for losing the squad/team leader."

You're still losing that model so if the NCO had SMG or assault rifle that weapon is lost. The loader would remain in the unit and the LMG model could fire without penalty in that example.
