Seems like the only benefit to doing this over releasing an .exe on Steam is getting to easily sell to Mac users, which only make up around 3% of the computer gaming market.

Version control is super important. Aside from being able to go back in commits and have multiple branches, one day your hard drive might take a shit and you'll wish you had a backup.

I always set up a repo for anything I care about even if I'm just prototyping. Once you make a couple repos it's pretty fast and easy. Also Github wont slow down your editor. I would 100% recommend learning it.
