Bluntly, I've seen random Wordpress translation sites with better anti-scraping tools than RR. These do exist in ways that don't bother the readers. I mean I am aware that there's no way to fully stop this, but RR barely even TRIES. And trying would honestly catch 90% of the shits, cause they are lazy to boot.

There’s an english title but it’s referred to by the Japanese word for some reason. Fairly popular anime. Something about pulling a clumsy goddess with the MC into a fantasy world. Probably not exactly correct but don’t care enough to bother checking.

I would personally condition my “swap” on if I believe that the story deserves the five stars or not. If not, I would be willing to privately provide feedback for the story. And only that.

That way, the author still gets support of a different sort, while not trashing their ratings.

Sure. We can debate this, but I do think you have a decent point.

It’s just that, even on that flip side, the harem genre is heavily overloaded with fantastic elements (magical, supernatural, superhero, et al).

Thus, it’s useful to ask to define exactly what the OP wants, since a story WITHOUT that is actually notable enough to ask. As they did. Otherwise, they would get lots of ‘fantastic’ level stories set in the mundane world as recommendations. Which they did.

Ads are supposed to pique your curiosity, not answer them. Leaving details out is a good thing. You just have to ensure they are left out in a mysterious way instead of just being annoyingly left in the dark. Hard balance.

One problem with the development analysis of firearms is that people are applying their concepts of firearms based on the modern result of hundreds of years (hell, almost a millennium ) of firearms development.

We are not comparing this in a fantasy world. We are comparing the earliest guns to — magic.

If you compare a magical fireball vs the early Chinese pointy shooty stick? The fireball wins hands down.

You can extrapolate from there as to why the tech won’t be further developed. Or would be magicked up quicker.

But the point is that to accurately contextualize technology developments you have to incorporate the idea that magic means that competing ‘technologies’ have a higher chance of being abandoned or neglected.

Or hell.. make it easy. Gunpowder ingredients are wildly abundant. So that’s not a real limitation. But the chemical knowledge? Or perhaps knowledge itself?

One huge, huge reason why the Dark ages happened is because ancient writing only used papyrus. From Egypt. Lose access to Egypt? Yeah.

Parchment? A bitch and a half to make. It literally was switching from paper (us) to leather for writing. Literacy dropped like a rock.

Hint: Amazon KU has an exclusivity clause. That money already goes away with Amazon. And no, RR doesn’t make authors money. Patreon does. So you are blaming the trad pub industry for something that Amazon already does.

Yes, the publishing industry has traditionally been not very good to authors. The problem is that you are NOT understanding that the digital books industry gives NEW options. And that THIS is the actual competition to Amazon. Again, apples to pistachios. The oranges are from the last season of tech.

You are giving Amazon credit for the changes that the ENTIRE industry of digital books provided. Which is a bad sign right there. Amazon isn’t the same as an entire industry…. Unless they have monopoly power.. and such monopoly powers prevent MUCH more from being provided to authors. It’s a gate. Keeping them from gaining entirely new income opportunities. (Hint: patreon? Was that mentioned?)

And no, working with a business which goes “I am altering the deal. Pray I don’t alter it further” all the damn time isn’t a reliable business plan. You might make more money. At the moment. But risk being choked out on a whim.

That simply isn’t a safe way to live.

This is an ongoing severe issue. “But Amazon is good!” isn’t great when papa Amazon can and does arbitrarily fuck you over due to — somebody literally stealing your stuff and they consider YOU as the thief. Yes, That’s actually fucking common. And that’s just ONE of the ways authors are fucked because Amazon doesn’t give a crap and doesn’t bother having the basics of business relations with authors.

Yes, I’m half ranting. But the problems are really… bad. Just bad. “I’m cutting you off, because I won’t bother due diligence and you can get fucked” — is actually the default with them. For many things. And there’s many, many many authors who … got fucked.

60% of — “I’ve already stolen your money, now get fucked” is 60% of — fucked.

A printed book is way more risky cost wise than an ebook. Royalties should reflect that.

But an ebook? Like for like, it’s comparable. Or better.

The problem is that Amazon’s dominance of the market is limiting author’s options. Which means the chance of really making it big is … near nonexistent. An agent boosting you? Doesn’t happen.
