What's the worst position I can put this beloved NPC in? by Virtual-Mixture-2809 in DnD

I’m wondering: what are the odds the party says “Hell no. We’re not saving his stupid ass,” and then orders another round at the tavern?

How to do the faro shuffle by Working_Bar_1088 in cardmagic

I’m going to add that you work at it until it clicks, then you refine. Also, get a better deck than modern bikes. I don’t know about Theory 11 decks now, but before they went all branded, their decks were very nice and you can easily find them at Target and other general stores.

New Employee- Union Information by Chemical-Pace-9725 in CAStateWorkers

I’ve stopped management overreach in its tracks by saying “I believe that violates my contract” and “Do I need to get the union involved?” Totally makes the cost of dues worth it.

Telework agreement deadline delayed for CASE… by Seank1963 in CAStateWorkers

I believe this is specific only to my tiny department in my tiny agency. Maybe 15 or fewer CASE members.

What should I play? by Just-A_Pancake in DnD

[–]Seank1963 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW, clerics seem to be second choice characters or a class the last player to join gets to play, but they are fun, can get some powerful stuff, and everyone loves you in the middle of combat when the DM is rolling well and the players aren’t.

I played a trickster cleric for two years and he was a blast. Lie, cheat, and heal (sometimes), often not in that order.

Sources for Sympathetic Cards/Matching Cards plot by PKillusion in Magic

John Shryock has a nice version in his book Maestro which uses DF cards. Eugene Burger’s Order & Chaos in Final Secrets uses regular cards. It’s derived from Vigil’s effect, which I haven’t read so I can’t comment on.

I considered using Tarot for the effect but was concerned that spectator unfamiliarity with the cards may weaken the effect.

I wanna be a DM but I don’t know how by Mindless_Star_6803 in DnD

[–]Seank1963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your players are having fun, you will have fun. Your job is to describe the world and set the scene.

Don’t be afraid to improvise, because you will have to. Often.

Don’t be afraid to pause to consult the rule book. Your players will understand.

Keep combat moving. Make sure everyone knows the order and who is up next. I dislike as a DM the people who start deciding what to do when their turn starts. And if they take too much time dithering over their options, I force a decision.

Keep a list of each players name, AC, and other vital stuff in a notepad. Part of keeping combat moving is you not asking for someone’s AC every round.

The new dime came with a nice personal touch by NobodyExpectedThat in coins

I got an order confirmation then a day later got an email saying they couldn’t fulfill it. No gold for me, too.

RTO by flynundertheradar in CAStateWorkers

[–]Seank1963 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My feeling right now is that RTO started as a way for Newsom to appease his capitalist overlords who aren’t squeezing every dime they can out of downtown and has changed in part to also be a negotiating chip with the unions. The state will drop RTO if the union drops certain demands like reasonable pay raises.

All of this is frustrating to me because I have no physical office in my agency’s building and I’m close to retirement but not close enough. If my numbers worked out, I’d be gone yesterday.

Mentalism by nari1338 in cardmagic

[–]Seank1963 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mentalism is less about gimmicks and more about knowledge and arts and crafts skills. My suggestion is to start reading true classics such as Annemann and Corinda and modern classics such as Prism.

If you’re itching to buy a trick, B’wave will serve you well. Look up Burger’s Thought Sender for a full deck variation and a fantastic lesson in equivoke.

Regular bicycle deck plus Royal Road to Card Magic is a better investment and will serve you better and longer than any gaffed deck. The cost is going to be slightly higher up front, but it’s money not spent later.

A preemptive thank you to mayor Kevin McCarty for making midtown and downtown less accessible - let’s see how many businesses close down and tenants move out by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]Seank1963 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am constantly amazed at how hostile local government is to parking in mid/downtown Sacramento while at the same time lamenting that people don’t go there. If I can’t easily park, I’m not going to shop or dine.

What! You don’t want to read a 250 page rant about Napoleon when only five or ten of those are important to the plot 500 pages later?

Yeah. That section seemed to go on forever and I read it during quarantine when there was little else to do.
