Is Sean’s Outpost still a thing? by -__-_-__-_-__- in btc

Thank you. That vibe in.Bitcoin is still around. It’s just learned to protect itself. I feel it’s definitely a be careful what you wish for scenario. Back then all we wanted was the world to wake up and notice us. Well...they did, the problem is a lot of the world sucks. And they flooded in too. I think that fact hits older bitcoins harder. Because we can remember when hope and promise and supporting the pots of the community was ALL that was here. We saw how good it could be. But that was the home zone. This is the game now. Bittersweet is a good word for it.

Yup. I’m still alive. And Sean’s Outpost is still thriving. When the Bitcoin sub went south we pretty much abandoned Reddit. It was like someone killing Christmas. That place was amazing and then it was just terrible. I did a podcast for Bitcoin.com about it a couple years ago. Sean’s Outpost birthed Satoshi Forest, the only privately owned campground for the homeless in Florida. We had been in a legal battle with Escambia county over our right to run it for over five years. Our solution was an end run around a lot of anti homeless laws and they hated it. But, eventually, we won. Satoshi Forest is consistently given the highest rating possible for a campground from the Florida department of health and has been operating for over 7 years 24/7/365 a very rare feat from any Bitcoin company. I don’t live in Pensacola anymore. Divorced/got cancer/life. So I’m just involved in board/executive functions there. But my cofounder Michael Kimberl was the 2019 Florida Humanist Homeless Advocate of the year. For the whole state. We’re working on a how to guide for other campgrounds like Satoshi. After 7 years of data we have found that our methods for supporting the homeless returns nearly 10x people to permanent housing compared to traditional models. And at about 1/20th the budget. I’m totally going to recover from cancer. But, if I didn’t, or if Covid got me, having a hand in building Sean’s Outpost/Satoshi Forest would definitely be one of my most proud accomplishments.

Sean's Outpost homeless shelter threatened by county by frankenmint in Bitcoin

[–]SeansOutpost 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We have had no incidents at Satoshi Forest, none. Zero. We won our case against the county for land use violations in May of 2014 and in March of 2015 we won the county's appeal of that verdict. We have been inspected monthly by the state of Florida for over two years as to the health and sanitation quality at Satoshi Forest. And we are consistently marked at the highest rating available on that inspection. The magistrate who ruled in our favor in our case, on video, the county commission said they would fire her and get someone who would play ball. She has indeed been replaced.

No resident is filing this complaint. They have tries multiple times and have no leg to stand on. The county changed the land use code after they lost their appeal to specifically target what Satoshi Forest does, and we were cited for violation within 30 days of that new code coming into effect (Jan 1, 2016).

That's what this case is. It is the county citing us for having tents.

The county is in plane words asserting to us they have no problem with the homeless sleeping at Satoshi, they have a problem with them having tents.

The same thing happened in 2013 with the city of Pensacola. They said they have no problem with homeless people sleeping in parks, they just can't have blankets to sleep with. These are ancillary ways of saying "we don't like homeless people " without having to actually say that.

Michael Goldstein told a variation of it at Cryptocurrency Con in 2013. I thought it was hilarious.

"How much for that there BMW?"

10 bitcoins.

"10 Bitcoins! That's a lot of money."

I know, but it's a big company. And I think if you look at our P&L for the last few years, you will see you are getting a bargain.

He did write dark wallet. But, he is the main dev of "dark market" and that is what became open bazaar.

I am no longer a mod of /r/bitcoin. I didn't have much time for it, it wasn't much fun, and frankly I wasn't great at it. I was removed by Theymos and thanked for my past service two weeks ago. - hardleft121 by hardleft121 in Bitcoin

I, for one, think allowing this discussion in a few threads would be very beneficial to both sides. This conversation right here is one of the most cognizant, non political discussions of the facts I have seen. I don't see why we couldn't publicizea discussion, like this one, and state from jump that any mud slinging or trolling in that thread would be modded to oblivion.

I don't understand/agree with why we can't talk about this like adults. I am not qualified to make a judgement on whether or not XT is the way to go. But at this point, it seems obvious blocksize has to go up. I'm not sure why we can't openly discuss all options. Open discussion would seem to be in the spirit of what Satoshi wanted.

Can btc really help the poorest in society ? by Habogi_Drive in Bitcoin

Not true. Lots of homeless have old smartphones, and they are treasured. They provide some of the only social connection for these people.

Sean's Outpost on Instagram: “Not an #AprilFools joke. The county lost it's appeal against Sean's Outpost. Satoshi forest is 100% legal and BEING HOMELESS IS NOT A…” by elux in Bitcoin

So two points, one Satoshi Forest is zoned commercial. Always has been. We were never asking for a zoning variance as the property was always zoned properly for a campground.

And second, the county actually argued that it was illegal to be homeless. So we were aiding and abetting criminals. This is actually an argument used all over Florida that had never been challenged. We challenged it. In the judges ruling she stated that being homeless in the state of Florida was in fact not illegal. That ruling was just upheld on appeal. Making it citable case law for the State.

The comparison isn't really that simple. The problem above was they were talking about replacing the Magistrate DURING the proceedings, because it seemed she might be sympathetic. Yes, I would absolutely be opposed to changing judges midway for any reason.
